Apart from the occasional visit from 10 and 7 year old nieces. Not that I mind. Looking forward to spending some more time with them I must say. She's done it again! One of my most prolific writing mates, Alison May, has just released the latest in her line of Christmas romances and it's another belter! 'Christmas Kisses' (here on Amazon) is an amalgamation of her fabulous series focussing on Holly, Cora and Jessica's adventures, under one title, in ebook and paperback now too.

Holly hates Christmas with a passion and can't wait to escape it - but then the flight to her once-in-a-lifetime holiday destination is cancelled.

Cora has had the year from hell, and faces a bleak Christmas working in Golding's department store - in the most unflattering reindeer costume imaginable.

Jessica is in denial after her husband's betrayal, and can't help but think back to when her life still seemed so full of hope and promise.

Three years from hell, three sets of broken dreams, three girls in desperate need of Christmas spirit.

Is the perfect Christmas kiss all it takes?

Am proud for Alison that Cora's Christmas Kiss was a finalist for the Romantic Novelist's Association ROSE Award so do give it a go, especially if, considering it's now only 7 weeks away - eek!

One reviewer on Amazon says -

"I have read these 3 stories separately so to have them altogether in one place is brilliant and makes you feel Christmassy already. Alison May is one of Choc Lit's excellent authors so all her stories are worth reading - enjoy!"

and

"Each story will get you in the festive spirit I can guarantee it, so get in the loft, grab your tree and decorate it."

Well done Alison! Cracking book and a great gift idea too, don't you think?

Had another session rehearsing for the November 18th concert in the lovely church in Chiswick with pianist Hugh this week - we are getting there! It's a song I've loved and sung a lot at karaoke - but is this the right key?

Listen here and let me know.

Plus this week it was hand the keys back time, for the cottage with the lovely garden but with the awful broadband, busy road and little sunshine. I'll miss aspects of it but overall, I was pleased to be moving on. It was such hard work though and really stressful! There's a little handover period before I'm fully down in Devon at my new place half the week from now on. (Weekends at QVC) Looking forward to getting my feet under the table and learning the ropes at Retreats for You nearby too, and realised whilst doing final packing how many bits of vintage looking crockery I already have ready for the vintage tea rooms next summer! If you have any ideas for a retreat you would go on, for a weekend or for four nights, let me know - themed topics or with a guest speaker - just reply to email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

The remaining two pogs Gracie and Daisy went off for a lovely doggy holiday courtesy of my Facebook pal Jane Scholes and 'happy homes' homestay boarding - met their old mates and tore round the garden straight away having fun! Here they all are just as I left. Three weeks there, then we are all going down to Devon for the final permanent move! (they will stay there and be looked after when I'm in London half the week doing QVC and staying with family.)

Book of the Week this week is Alison May's 'Christmas Kisses' anthology - another lovely Christmassy theme - well, why not, it is November! Also this weekend there are some brilliant bargains on QVC. Early Bird Links this week are very exciting - the Dyson V6 cordless vac at a great deal, 4 x EZ pay AND free p&p. Then Sunday's super Laura Geller set - amazing prices for this now UK high street brand that we all love. Go here to order early!

Finally if you like to see pics and vids of my week on and off QVC, go here to read  my QVC blog, this week featuring the LEMON CHALLENGE! LOL. Can't help the face I make, wouldn't you?

Moving Times

Fab couple of days down in Retreats for You in Devon. Sheepwash is so pretty in the autumn sunshine! Some of my furniture is going into the main house. I will be living nearby so i can help out half the week! (Other half in qvc land!) #NewEra!

Here's a few pics so you can see the kind of place people can come to to relax and unwind and just focus on their writing. Or whatever else they want to focus on!

Here's a comfy room which will be a TV room or a bedroom for someone who can't 'do' stairs, as required. I added some finishing touches - can you spot the Peony ones? lol.

And of course the essential supper in the huge country kitchen with aga!

And finally after a long day's work, here's the way I like to spend the evening - in front of a roaring open fire...

The family stayed at the Retreat and mum was watching Strictly on Catch Up, her partner was snoring and I was doing social media - what else! hehe!

There is a video of one of the bedrooms, decked out with much of my stuff, on my new QVC blog - it''s here. -where you will also see lots of sneaky peeks for the week ahead! ANd info about this weekend's (tonight Friday and Sat and Sun) bargains, incl a superb Amazon Fire tablet twin pack for around £100 on 4 x EZ! buy it now by going to my Early Bird order link page, here, - where you'll find all the deals! Plus a really funny old blooper - possibly the only time I've completely lost it on live TV from early QVC days! Also info about the new Amazon Echo which will revolutionize your home situation, Lee will tell all over the weekend...

other news -

 - Book of the week - is one from Rowan Coleman. Having just finished an earlier one from one of my favourites, Lucy Dillon ( the Ballroom Class - and yes, she made me cry again - several times!) it's time for another. Rowan's 'Lessons in Laughing Out Loud' is my next entertainment on the way down to Devon again on Monday (half the week there, half at QVC). Read more about it here on Read it Write it Sell it blog!

- Finally if you've ever been stuck somewhere in a single lane road has it been due to this? :-) Only in Devon eh! lol.

By the way next week on this blog I will be adding my first rehearsal for the concert I'll be performing at in Chiswick in three weeks time on 18th at the church, up to 270 people will be watching and I'm rather nervous! See what I'm singing by popping back next week!

Have a lovely week I will send updates and give you regular blogs and also the 'vlogs,' my video blogs

This is from one of my regular top-reads, I always look out for new Rowan Coleman books to add to my audiobook library. It's from 2011, but this one is also narrated brilliantly on Audible and part of my entertainment on my long journeys down to Devon once a week.

Willow and Holly are identical twins.  They are everything to each other.  Holly calls Willow her rock, her soul mate, her other half.  And Willow feels the same about Holly. They are alike in every respect except one - Willow is afraid on the inside. And all because of a secret - one that binds the sisters closely together and yet has meant their adult lives have taken two very different paths.

Willow often feels there are large parts of her missing, qualities she only knows she's lacking because she sees them in her sister. For a very long time Willow has felt separated from Holly by one terrible moment in time - a moment that meant Willow's life was never the same again. And when the past catches up with her, Willow realises it's finally time for her to face her fears, and - with Holly's help - learn to laugh out loud once more...

Tons of five star reviews - as there always are for lovely Rowan! Am looking forward very much to the workshop she and Julie Cohen are running in Bristol in March 3-5th (see previous blogs to get the info.)

'Chick Lit Chloe' a Top 1000 reviewer on Amazon says - 'Once I had finished this book, I have to say its one of the most moving and beautifully written novels I read in a long time - and its the first to actually have me crying tears for a very long time. Come the end I was sobbing for Willow, and it takes a great talent to move me to tears, let me tell you!'

I loved the larger than life characters including Victoria the ascerbic agent too!

Find Rowan's book here  on Amazon and of course it's on audiobook too.

Well it's happening this weekend wish me luck! The big move down to Devon. Here is what my house looks like right now as I write this. I will be spending half the week down in Devon helping to run the fabulous writers' retreat centre in Sheepwash called retreats for you - more info here.

For those who missed it the last couple of weeks' blogs have explained more. (see archive, bottom left)

I'm not dropping any QVC days just coming back an forth once a week, once everything is up and running, but the next month or so will be very intense as I settle in nearby, hopefully making plans amidst all of it to get a vintage tea rooms up and running next year! And all sorts of other retreats, not just writing ones. Do you know anyone who runs a regular retreat and needs a venue? Or are you looking to just get away from it all? Email me This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Now I am a patron for Linda magistrates good grief trust, as well as an ambassador for medical detection dogs. I can do as much as I can to help fundraising - but from my new base.

One of the things I may be able to facilitate from retreats for you, is a getaway for the bereaved and greiving people to come and feel supported, talk about their experience and maybe get some counselling from some experts. Considering Deborah who runs it only charges about £90 a night including all meals - And wine at dinner! And afternoon tea coffee cake! - it's always booked out. But maybe something in March - what do you think?

So the dogs are not coming down just yet. They are little bit bemused by all the activity going on in my house, but they will be very happy in their new home in a few weeks time. I rent where I am now so there is an overlap but it will be good to get back on the property ladder. Plus it will be great to have the sunshine into early evening again, as I do not get any at my current place, so as nice as the garden is, I don't think I could face another summer in the shady hollow between hills and trees. I'm also looking forward to getting sky-go including broadband and phone - what a deal, only £46 - I've persuaded them to get it at the new place :-) which also means better broadband, my other big bugbear about where I've been living for the last year. It'll mean less shouting at the screen, and less time spent looking at the little icon going round and around whilst making a 'buffer face...'

Yay! Will keep you informed - wish me luck!

Book of the week - it's a Christmas one! The first one! Sounds brilliant too - from Sue Moorcroft who has released her e-book of The Christmas surprise - click here to find out more.

The health update on my website Back to You blog this week is all about the update on my rare genetic skin condition, I went in the week to see the expert at the Lister Hospital to find out that I am one of only 250 people in the country to have EPP. What is it? Find out more here. But at least not going in the sun most of my life has meant my skin is reaping the reward now, aged 54! Mind you I would have probably preferred to have some fun in the sun over the years... :-)

In my QVC blog this week I will be discussing there are some fabulous funnies, and I look ahead at sneaky peeks to come. If you like buying early, do you go see the Liz Earle today's special value from this Sunday, already available via my earlybird order link here plus the Skechers one from tonight (Fri 21st midnight) if you're quick :-)

So this time next week everything will be gone from my house apart from the bare minimum and I have a question. I'm spending 10 more days at my place before I hand back the keys, and I just need to keep the barest essentials there for popping back. Until we go lock stock and barrel.

So apart from the obvious kettle coffee tea, somewhere to sleep and toiletries, what must I make sure I have not forgotten? I have a Niggly feeling there will be something :-)

Have a lovely week I will send updates and give you regular blogs and also the 'vlogs,' my video blogs here on my Facebook page so do you go like the page and you'll be the 1st to see them - you will see all of them, I don't always share them everywhere else. THis week's book of the week is partly because it's set at Christmas and partly because the talented Sue Moorcroft was one of the first people I heard speak about writing - at the York Festival around 2010. A prolific author, she's had some of Choc Lit's best sellers over the years and now her new novel is out on eBook!

Countdown to Christmas - step into the wonderful world of bespoke hat-maker Ava Bliss…

For Ava Bliss, it’s going to be a Christmas to remember…

On a snowy December evening, Sam Jermyn arrives like a whirlwind in the life of talented hat maker Ava. Sparks fly, and not necessarily the good ones.

Times are tough for Ava – she’s struggling to make ends meet, her ex-boyfriend is a bully, and worst of all, it’s nearly Christmas.

So when Sam commissions Ava to make a hat for someone special, she makes a promise that will change her life. She just doesn’t know it yet…

It sounds perfect to curl up with - a gorgeousearly festive treat – great if you're a fan of Katie Fforde, Carole Matthews and Trisha Ashley.

And the Amazon link to get the ebook now is : https://www.amazon.co.uk/Christmas-Promise-perfect-festive-treat-ebook/dp/B01D4WO2OU/

The ebook's out now but the paperback doesn't hit the shelves until 1 December (unless you were at the special launch event at Waterstones Nottingham this week!). It's roaring up the Amazon charts - top ten in several of them, and hitting the low two hundreds in the overall Kindle UK chart - so well worth a look!

The reviews are already loving it -

Welsh Annie - a top reviewer on Amazon says 'This is a story that’s bang up-to-date and might not be quite what you’re expecting – the cut and thrust world of viral campaigns and marketing, and the dangers of instant sharing in the on-line world with a very realistic story line on cyber bullying and revenge porn. There are the difficulties and realities of running a small business too – making your way in the world as a milliner plainly isn’t easy – and serious illness also casts its shadow over the festive celebrations. There are some really dramatic moments  too – just when you think everything is settling down and progressing nicely – that had me on the edge of my seat, frantically turning pages to see just what was going to happen next.

But somehow – and so very, very cleverly – it’s all worked into a simply gorgeous Christmas-focused story that warms your heart and leaves you with the broadest of smiles on your face. There’s a laugh on your lips at many points throughout the book too – some wonderful characters (I particularly adored footballer’s wife Ruby…), sparkling dialogue, and the perplexing world of faux dating.' and gives it five stars as do most others.

Am really proud of Sue - I often see her at the RNA 'dos' and am looking forward to it hopefully being out in audiobook at some point - great for my long journeys down to my new home in Devon!

NEWS UPDATE ON EPP (16th Nov)

Another update for you - I was sent the results of my blood tests, and it turns out that there's this measurement of how much 'protoporphyrins' are in my blood, compared to the norm. Well most people will have less than 0.2 (of this specific protoporphyrin measuremnt) - well my measurement is 14.7. That's about 73 times the norm. ~So yes, I definitely have EPP. (see below if you haven't yet read about my rare genetic condition.)

Dr Robert Sarkhany also told me that because of the odds involved and the rarity of what I've got, whilst both my kids don't have it, thank goodness, their own children only stand a one in 80 chance of getting it.

Plus mine is only mild, again thank goodness. He told me that there is a drug that's now been licensed but it costs a fortune, an implant under the skin, and by February NICE will have given their verdict on whether the 250 or so sufferers in the UK would be able to be given it by their doctor. Interesting. And he gave me a 'prescription' to go to St Thomas's hospital dispensary to ask for some thick gunky sun cream, that doesn't block 'UVA UVB' which most do - it blocks VIOLET light... Will keep you informed how I get on!

EPP update

This week I went to see the expert in EPP, my skin condition, which I first told you about a couple of weeks ago – for the full info about my first post see below left. If you don't know me well and haven’t heard, I just discovered recently about the condition that’s plagued me since I was two - where my skin gets burning hot if I stay too long in the sun.

So the first dermatologist sent me along to see Dr Robert Sarkaney, the country’s foremost expert in this rare genetic condition called EPP – erythro-poietic Protoporphyria – and the apt was this week. He is based in a wonderful relaxed calm setting in Lister Hospital in Chelsea, near our old QVC building! (Well the place it used to be, it's flats now) He then, for the first time in my life, explained to me how EPP works

.

I have to have inherited a gene from both my parents, that's why it is so rare, only 250 people in the country have it, he thinks, and one of them is me. Always knew I was unique! Lol.

One parent’s gene has to be faulty and the other has to be not working at all. That's how someone gets what I get. So both my parents would themselves have had no problems in the sun because they also had a second healthy gene  that was absolutely fine. He asked if anyone else has it, b ut no, I’m the ‘lucky’ person who inherited this awful skin problem.

Normally I can't go in hot sun for longer than about three or four minutes before it starts feeling like it's burning. If I stay in it too long, it swells up – the backs of my hands go all gel like and puffy and it burrrrns like crazy!  I always just thought it was sensitive skin. But it's this unusual situation under the skin where chemicals are interacting with a part of sunlight.

I’d have guessed it was something to do with UVA or UVB but apparently it’s not. They think that it's actually violet light, as in the violet end of the rainbow. What happens is that it creates a chain reaction inside my skin with a enzyme which is missing called Ferrochelatase. This has to be present to change something called ‘protoporphyrins,’ into  ‘heme’ as in haemoglobin
. But in my skin the process doesn’t work – hardly at all it turns out – so  because my protoporphyrins don't get converted  I  end up with a build up. These protoporphyrins coat  the insides of the tiny tiny blood vessels just under my skin. On the hands and feet and face the skin is skinner – Alison Young was always right! And it's because it's so thin that the violet light gets through when it's exposed to the sun for too long and this creates a catastrophic breakdown of the tiny blood vessel walls. Because there is no blood vessel any more the pain is excruciating. What also happens is that anything that should have been pumping through the blood vessel has nowhere to go, so my hands puff up because of all the fluid that should have been contained in the blood vessels. It takes two days for it to go back down again because that's how long it takes to regenerate new blood vessels.

The pain during that time is like putting your hand on an iron - it really is that hot. And now I know why. There is no known cure, but he's going to see me again after blood test to tell me more about what tiny things we can do to mitigate and lessen the photosensitivity. I told him how Ultrasun 50 definitely feels like it helps me. Maybe they’ll do something one day which blocks some of the violet light as well
, who knows. I must ask Abi Cleeve :-)

It feels good to know I'm not the only one in the country, not alone. Have you ever felt that if you discovered and illness? One of my closest Friends has something called IIH. And she and I chatted about how comforting it was just to discover what it was even though not a lot can be done about it.

One day they may have developed a drug which helps. Apparently during pregnancy it doesn't happen. It was so long ago for me,  I don't remember to be honest. But it would be great to think that at some point in the future I can possibly get a holiday booked in the red Sea or the Maldives and know I can do all the sports activities
, diving et cetera and be like a normal person. But having stayed out of the sun for so many years my skin is reaping the rewards, so I have to look on the bright side. People who know me know I always do!

I have to say I’m easily pleased. A cosy tea room and a tasty cuppa, a good audio book on a long journey, or a cuddle with the pogs. But this week I got another kind of ‘happy’ when my Smeg accessories arrived from QVC. OK I know it takes little to make me glad, they say I’m not only ‘glass half full’ I’m ‘glass-filled-up-by-a-magic-genie-every-time-some-disappears’! Well there are worse things to be! Lol.

I got the toaster and the kettle to go with my lovely duck egg mint colour fridge.

Well I do love this retro look. Hope I can make my new kitchen look colour coordinated like this when I move end of October! Missed news of the move? Go here for more info…

Plus, after my old dog passed away last week, after a nasty debilitating illness at age 15, I made myself feel happier watching some early youtube clips. Just look at this amazing video of how gentle and loveable Patchy dog was, seen here in her prime, when Gracie and Daisy first arrived, as puppies around May 2010 – click here.

Four dog formation – funny!

Patch with toy – around Feb 2012

Patch’s toys stand no chance! Daisy gets mean

Pogs Daisy and Gracie play with my grand’pog Baloo and Patch

And finally – Patchy plays with the pups when they first arrive at ours

RIWISI blog this week – well I’m still really enjoying the Nurse Connie books on audio, plus I finished The Day of Second Chances, aka ‘Falling’ by Julie Cohen, my recent book of the week. If you’d like to win one, there’s still time – just go here and enter asap by leaving a comment – closes tomorrow.

This weekend – lots of sneaky peeks including for the Samsung big 4k smart TV on Sunday 16th Oct on QVC. Plus I’m launching the Tarte TSV – early bird order links are here. Plus on the new blog – coming out Fri pm you’ll see another update on the Devon project, and what happened at the Apprentice – going live here Fri pm.

Have a fab week!
