Hello one and all!

If you're a regular on my Back to You QVC Group on facebook (go join if you're not) you'll know all about my new challenge. It's all explained in the long letter at the bottom. I'd love you to join me - just go leave a message on the facebook group and take it from there. The question 'which habit would you like to break' doesn't have to be concerning eating habits, weight loss, or fitness, even though mine are. And if you want to also send me a 'before' pic , like the one I've posted below, then it doesn't have to be in a bikini top and shorts like mine is! Unelss you want to! Just in normal clothing if you prefer. As you can probably tell, I'm aiming to tone up and shape up. And I'm sure QVC regulars will agree it's amazing what slimming pants and empire lines can do to make the best of a figure like mine on air! lol! (NB this pic is for the purposes of sharing and 'disclosure' with the ladies on the Back to You QVC Group on QVC, it's not for any other purpose, so any random males with predictable comments should take it that I thank them formally for their comment but I won't be replying! Hah! ) So anyway, it'll be interesting to see how I look by June, but not by following  a 'diet' - rather, by following the principles which helped me lose 35lb a decade ago and mostly keep it off for many years. So who's with me on this challenge? We'll reassess weekly, on here, and with a big Monday update on the facebook group. Then in June, to coincide with the launch party of my next romance novel, Hawaiian Retreat, I will be inviting successful participants of this challenge to the informal charity garden party in Surrey. If you can't post, or can't come, don't worry - it'd be great if you can still join in by doing whatever aspect of the challenge you can do.

 

Break the Habit Challenge

So what would yours be? Many are joining me in eating habits and exercise. Zoe Robins wants to meditate more (hear hear), for Jill Dowding-Walker it's all about mental health and being more spiritual, and Jo Brown wants to get a better work/life balance (amen to that too). See below for my looooooong post giving you all the info about my own challenge, based around the principles in my Till the Fat Lady Slims book - hence the TFLS Challenge! If you do that with me, cool! If not, choose your own habit to break between now and JUNE. And we'll all be taking part together in this Break the Habit Challenge 2014.

In April 2012 I went on a week's course learning about health and nutrition with a lovely lady who makes the tastiest healthy recipes and runs her own youtube channel. Marlene Watson Tara, and her hubby Bill Tara, are my gurus, and speak such sense - you can find tons of answers, mostly linking nutrition to solving our health problems, on her fab website www.marlenewatsontara.com including more like the following post which she kindly put on our facebook group this week.  That's miso soup in the picture, and a very bloated-faced Debbie. I lost a stone pretty soon after that week, and have mostly stuck to healthier plant-based foods since, apart from a stressful time before xmas when I had too much choc and chips (not together) (LOL) - hence the jelly belly in the 'before' bikini top pic above.

So off we go then - here's to success, stickability, forgiving ourselves if we slip off the wagon (if we do, wait three hours and get it right the next mealtime - there are no disasters, only lessons) and a lot of fun along the way to our new selves, circa June 2014!

Dear Back to You QVC group.

Here is an important announcement (said in Siri type voice over). (But don’t get too excited!)

As promised, following the enormous success of the Monday show on QVC, this support group will not only continue, but I have a challenge for you, and I want you to not only join me, I want you – if you can commit – to do it alongside me till June. In June, ready for beach reading, I will have a summer launch party to which any participants of this challenge can come. You will be invited, and it’ll be here in Surrey date tbc in June. It’ll tie in with the quite separate launch of ‘Hawaiian Retreat’, my third book in the trilogy of novels I’ve written, but it’s a good date to aim for.

So –

I’m hereby launching the Break the Habit Challenge.

 

BREAK THE HABIT CHALLENGE

Mine is this – and if you can do it too, you need to state yours on this post by leaving a comment below, so I know who’s taking part. I hereby commit to follow distinct eating principles as listed below, and – shockingly – to reveal every Monday a bikini shot (or bikini-ish) showing exactly why I need your help to make me stick to the programme.

You don’t have to do a bikini shot, but I would be very grateful for a before shot of you now, for my Back to You Page on debbieflint.com. There, EACH MONDAY, I will do a weekly update, and feature weekly news from you guys.

 

WHY

Because January is over, and many of us stuck to our ‘thing’ for longer this year due to Back to You. I want this to continue, making the new habits become our normality. That way we can keep up the impetus and momentum through till the summer. But it takes commitment, and this is the best way I know to keep committed. Or face public humiliation. Or perhaps do that anyway with the bikini pics! Eeek!

 

WHAT

I promise to follow the Food Freedom principles listed below. You can choose whatever your own Break the Habit challenge is, but if NOTHING ELSE, join me on my one. Note I am not saying ‘I will lose x pounds’ – I’m not asking that of anybody. The CRUCIAL DIFFERENCE is that it’s a challenge to break a habit, not to aim for something no new year’s resolution has yet achieved. If it’s weight loss that eludes you, instead just do what I do and see what happens. Commit by joining the challenge, then it’s public and we’re all in it together. Many have done well so far in January - but others haven’t - and you’re all – ALL - welcome.  I just want to continue the massive support group through till the summer. So join me, OR make up your own, but kindly join by stating your aim by posting below, and off we go!

 

TILL THE FAT LADY SLIMS – TFLS CHALLENGE.

If you’ve read my semi-autobiographical weight loss book ‘Till the Fat Lady Slims’ (amazon), you’ll have read about these basic principles. This is what I aim to do – a more detailed explanation will be published next week as a freebie on amazon (TFLS mini-book).

-          Eat only when sufficiently hungry

-          Choose the food my BODY wants most – not my mind.

-          By really choosing carefully what appeals to my palate most, getting my mind – and bad habits – out of the way

-          Bear in mind what I’ve learned about nutrition in order to choose,

-          But not making something forbidden if it leads to disastrous ‘start again tomorrow, eat the fridge today’ habits

-          Give the food my full attention, doing nothing else whilst eating

-          STOP WHEN SATISFIED not when just past it, and definitely not when full

-          Keep anything left until later, when I can have it again, when 6 / 10 on hunger scale once more.

-          Ignore all criticisms around me and stand by these principles as that’s how slim people eat

-          Exercise - Move my body every day, even if it’s only a one minute bodyblade or leg master (I personally will do my dog walk and yoga as well as use exercise devices)

And this is my promise to you all, until June 2014. And beyond.

We will mark the occasion with a special ‘Summer Launch Party’ to tie in with the publishing of my next novel, actual June date of party in Surrey to be decided.

 

UPDATES

As promised, this group will continue, and posts will be headed ‘Break the Habit Challenge’ (or #BHC), or TFLS Challenge (or #TFLSC) to distinguish from general posts, so we can all track our progress.

Each Monday I will post a new update on my website debbieflint .com where you will see new weekly pics of me – (gulp) – in bikini (or equivalent). So that ultimately I can get ‘Back to You’ – to the me that was slimmer and looked like I did in that pic of me with daughter Lauren in 2000 in Ibiza, with the abs!

 

WHO’S IN? So that’s the announcement. I know the bikini bit may be a bit shocking – and you don’t have to do that bit too, don’t worry! But now I’ve said it, it begins.

Do check out Till the Fat Lady Slims book if you want to read the whole story of how Freedom Eating works, and how I did it the first time, when I was 13 stone and lost 35lbs and kept it off for a very long time. I haven’t binged since, just chosen wrongly through stressful times, and bad habits. Macrobiotic eating helps me too, and the knowledge of what food does in my body helps me choose what my BODY wants, not what my brain wants. Or thinks it wants. So I can fine-tune the healthier eating I’ve been doing, but just be a bit more disciplined, like the old days.

DON’T WORRY

The end result of this TFLS challenge is ALWAYS that if you love your food, you’ll love meal times even more. IT WON’T WORK FOR EVERYBODY and I’m not expecting everybody to join in with this. Just to observe me and the others doing it and keep us going! Or choose another habit you’d like to break and stick to your own list of principles till June, in your own Break the Habit Challenge (BHC). I repeat – my choice WONT WORK FOR EVERYBODY – so choose what works for you.  And DON’T WORRY – you’re not going to be judged, whichever choice you make.

FREEDOM

But what you may find if you do it with me  is that you are able to stop the endless spiral of feeling down about not being able to ‘stick’ to good or bad foods, ‘cos if you stop when satisfied, and make the right choices for your body each time, and wait till hungry, the rest often sorts itself out and the weight adjusts once your body knows that your mind isn’t going to get in the way any more. In the way of how you would have eaten naturally if you’d never unlearned our body’s natural way of eating, of how to use food as fuel, not as comfort. Remember, it’s all about listening to your body and doing what’s best for it, and allowing the mind to stop the habits of a lifetime.

Final show of the series! What have you enjoyed most? And Kim from Kim&Co gives hints and tips about dressing right.

It’s gone so fast, hasn’t it? January? Already we’re at the final show, this Monday night at 9pm on QVC UK. I do hope you’ve enjoyed what we’ve been doing and whilst it hasn’t always been possible to schedule purely New Year New You items, we’ve done our best to tie it in!

 

KIM AND CO COMPETITION AND FASHION TIPS

Since this week’s theme is health and beauty, I thought I’d mention Kim’s range, since in the promo, most of the clothes I wear are from Kim & Co! Kim’s clothes also fill much of my QVC wardrobe space too, as I found out recently when I had the ‘samples police’ (!) in the dressing room checking out what I’ve still got! Seriously, I buy a lot – ‘cos it’s comfortable elegance. So I asked Kim for a message for this blog. She said –

Hi Debbie, A great fit and fabric will allow all of us to be better people e.g. kinder to ourselves and others, more attentive, compassionate, focused, relaxed, confident, etc… Why? When you are not concentrating on how your clothes are fitting and feeling you are free to be the best you can be…Let the beauty of you shine through.’

FINDING A LOOK THAT WORKS

I don’t know about you, but I spent much of my youth bemoaning aspects of my shape – bum too big, boobs too small, wobbly bits all over. I met a body builder once, who said to me ‘Debbie, work with me and I could give you the body you had when you were 20.’ I said to him ‘I don’t want the body I had when I was 20!’ lol. My best shape was around 2000, when that pic was taken of my abs.

Well, my routine consisted of going to the gym four or five mornings a week, so no wonder! And eating right. We’ve had a lot about eating right haven’t we, over this last four weeks. Well assuming you’ve been reading all the hints and tips, links and info (read back over the past three blogs if not) you’ll at least know what to do, even if you don’t do what you know. We all have set-backs, none of us are perfect all the time (well most of us aren’t, including me.)

But the difference nowadays is that I feel more at home with a body that I know I can help with certain tricks that make the best of my shape.

-          Shapewear – I know I joked about this in my romance novel, but it truly is one of the most wonderful inventions ever. And what’s more, wearing it could help you feel like you’re a few pounds slimmer – which might spur you on somewhat, even if you’re having a ‘fat day’ or a slip up. Choose the right ones tho – I recommend several that we do including ‘slim n lift aire’ long shorts with lace trim.

-          Empire line – OMG if only I’d known about Empire Line years ago! Goodbye horrible t-shirts and long skirts and yukky suits. My shape – hour glass – or hour glass in one of those comedy hall of mirrors from a fairground, ie a bit shorter and rounder! – suits a silhouette that goes in at the ribcage, NOT at the waist. Like the dress I wore at the  Beauty Bash this week, 120226. Or my Mother of the Groom dress by Antthony Designs,106613.

-          Draping tunics and shark bite hems – Yong Kim, Kim and Co, Antthony, Together fashions, Renee, Lenny, so many of them are so fantastic, and cover the tushy and hips and make you feel feminine and flattered. Fabulous! All over leggings or jeggings, tucked into boots or Emu’s – long Bibi Bijoux jewellery or Honora Pearls – sorted! Or even some good fitting jeans – Diane Gilman stretch fit are fab.

-          And of course getting those curvier bits more tones with the exercise gadgets we’ve been discussing! Bodyblade or Leg Master if you can’t stretch to a pilates machine are my recommendations.

 

OTHER NEWS

And if you’ve been doing well with the weight loss, or even if you haven’t, how much have you lost? Measured in these wild and wacky equivalents?!

Russell Blake – Powerhouse Author, on how Volume is the Answer, in the Self-Pub Battlefield

So with the end of January just around the corner, I’m turning back to work on my fiction once more, having spent much of this month writing mostly support materials for the Back to You QVC page and facebook group! (see tab above)

And quite as if to taunt me, along came an article in the Wall Street Journal online, which made me immediately feel ten times worse! Seems that one of my favourite self-pub-bloggers, Russell Blake, is producing a new novel roughly every 5 weeks. Yes really. That’s 7-10,000 words a day. The article is full of fabulously fascinating facts (sorry, couldn’t resist that phrase!) and self-pub statistics, as the trend continues for more and more would-be authors to self-publish instead of waiting for a traditional book publishing deal.

Bowker, a publishing research firm, say –

-       They counted 391,000 self-published titles in 2012, up from 51,237 in 2006.

-       Then last year, in 2013, self-published books accounted for 32% of the 100 top selling e-books on Amazon each week, on average. That’s a THIRD of all eBooks on Amazon were by authors not going through a publisher, but going it alone.

Some self-published authors produce more books a year than many established writers put out in a lifetime. Jon Hargrove, who self-publishes vampire novels and mysteries under the pen name J.R. Rain (er… phwoar! Sorry, couldn’t resist that either!), released 18 books in 2013, including eight that he co-wrote with other credited authors.

Melissa Foster, a 47-year-old mother of six who lives in Maryland, self-published 11 novels in 2013, mostly romances, and says she has sold more than 400,000 copies. Ms. Foster credits Mr. Blake with goading her to write faster. "Just the massive amount of work he has out there has really spurred his success," she says

Russell Blake himself has now sold over 435,000 copies of his books, at around $5 each, and he gets $3.50 per book. Life-changing for the prolific, then, this self-pub lark? Or for most far less prolific authors, it’s a tiny fraction of that (see last week’s RiWiSi about author earnings) hardly covering the cost of production.

And it’s back to the keyboard for me – having plotted out much of Book 3 of my Hawaiian Trilogy in my head, and with a June deadline, it’s time once more to put pen to paper… er, rather - finger to keys! If you’re writing a novel, how far have you got?

STEAMY CHAPTER UPDATE – in case you missed it!

If you hadn’t read or heard elsewhere, on Thursday (23rd) I went to the QVC Beauty Bash, where quite a few people told me they’d loved Hawaiian Affair, and were now reading Hawaiian Escape, and had got to a certain crucial stage! They kindly asked about my separate download of the ‘Hawaiian Extra’ steamy chapter, which fits neatly into the middle of the book. It’s when the sisters are in Tuscany, a scene between Helen and Allesandro, and it was intended to be separately available so that Hawaiian Escape could be released for Xmas as PG book (although those who have read it will know it’s pretty near the knuckle!) So when will it be ready to download? Very soon, now that January’s nearly over (and Back to You Monday shows end!) Please do go sign up for the newsletters on the home page on this site and you’ll be amongst the first to know, as that’s the way I’ll make the first announcement!

EXERCISE – NEW INFORMATION

We have to exercise, full stop. Our lymph system revolves around movement (google it). And if we don’t or don’t much, then things don’t work like they should. We all know it, it’s just doing something about it, isn’t it. Well this isn’t the place to go into too much depth about why you should exercise, there’s far more online than I could ever put here.

BUT…

There’s a new book I’d like to draw your attention to if you’re a bit stuck. Plus a couple of thoughts, gleaned largely from discussions on the Facebook group, that I’d like to impart. New info means new ways of thinking, right? If so, read on and maybe my enthusiasm for the Body blade (and the one minute challenge, which will happen again next week! Lol) will become clear…

BABY STEPS

This was  a post from this week – a ‘thought for the day’ if you like. For anyone with exercise devices still in the box -

“Step one, get it out and assemble it, then just play. Aim to just do a few movements of some of the different exercises - have fun with it! I think half the time we see our exercise devices as tokens of us changing, and it scares us. Or of hard work and feeling exhausted and it puts us off. So just sit on it, watch TV or just sit and read a book on it, but get used to doing something on it each day ... till the day u actually feel yourself wanting to do some reps on it - the rest will follow, if you let it. RELAXATION, MEDITATION AND HAVE A GOOD DE-CLUTTER

MEDITATION

We know we should relax, don’t we? Who does it well enough, regularly enough? Not me. I am aiming to get back to doing my daily meditation as I know I breathe more easily once I’ve done my twenty minutes escape into ‘the gap’ as they call it. There are some wonderful videos on meditation on Youtube – lovely music and everything. Just search ‘meditation’ and see what comes up. Pick one you like, switch your mind off, focus on your breathing, and sit still without thinking about stuff. After all, 22 years ago (*gulp*) when they taught me TM (transcendental meditation) it was either that or I’d end up killing somebody. Lol. Joking, but the kids were small and money was tight and learning how to do it really helped my mind clear. I said when I first began to do it daily, that it felt like a huge difference - you walk around your whole life with a motorbike helmet on your head, and doing TM felt like someone had cut a big hole in the top of it and let in the sunlight and fresh air, my brain loved it so much!

One of the hardest things was sitting still and making my mind still too. There are lots of different methods but the one I use has a mantra – a single word that means nothing – which I say over and over and it helps to make my brain calmer. Then of course after a while, you find yourself thinking a thought. But they said that if you realise you’re thinking a thought, all you have to do is bring your mind back to repeating the mantra over and over quietly again in your head till the next one comes along. Of course TM’s not the only method. See above to find some – often they’re called ‘guided meditation’ too. Try one to find one you like or seek advice from an expert or practitioner. But I do find when I’m reading up on all this stuff that if stress is at the heart of a lot of our woes, then meditation helps cut stress and gets mentioned a huge amount. So it’s worth a try. Am sure Hay House will have some meditation products if you’re not sure where to begin.

 

DE-CLUTTER – ARE YOU A ‘FILER’ OR A ‘PILER’?!

Sometimes we don’t help ourselves though, if our whole lives are filled with reminders of a long, long ‘to do’ list, prompted by clutter everywhere we look. So often a good ‘de-clutter’ could help feel like it’s truly a new start! Someone I know de-cluttered her husband out of her life too, but we don’t have to go quite that far! Although they do say that getting rid of toxic people can also free you up to achieve your goals but that’s another topic all together! Lol. This week, I had some tips on having a clear out – do a ‘trial separation’ and see what happens after a year. Doesn’t feel quite so bad! I’m talking about bags of clothes or shoes etc, but works just as well with a husband… Joking.

Wayne Dyer is one of my absolute faves, bit of a guru of mine as you’ll know if you read his books I recommended last week! Well, Hay House, his publishers, do a regular newsletter that’s quite interesting and worth a read. This week they sent round an email with his tips on de-cluttering. Give it a go! This was my lounge before Christmas, but happily by the time everyone arrived, it was clear and clean and sorted out! Phew!

I did a massive de-clutter with my lovely Lauren, of all the stuff that’s been in my biggest bedroom for about five years - it used to be her room. We filled eight bin bags of charity stuff and four of recycling paper etc and four she took home. Seriously! Now I have empty corners in that room. Soon be filled I’m sure, but whilst the empty corners are there, it feels curiously freeing! So give yourself a thorough de-clutter, especially if you need to distract yourself from feeling down, or from eating rubbish, or just because.

 

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF WEIGHTLOSS… CONTINUED

On this week’s RiWiSi page, you’ll see a feature all about how reading a gripping novel causes biological changes in the brain which last for days as the mind is transported into the body of the protagonist. So choose your fiction carefully! I loved what some people said about how they felt after reading my two novels, Hawaiian Escape and the steamy follow-up, Hawaiian Affair – truly ‘feelgood’ endings – in more ways than one, now we have this new science, eh? That was the plan when I wrote them anyway.

Well knowing how we feel when we watch certain programmes, I think the same is probably true of losing yourself in TV or film too. Therefore, fill your mind up with useful info and give yourself new thoughts to consider, breaking the patterns you may have gotten into over the months or years of being stuck.

Deepak Chopra says ‘we have 60,000 thoughts every day, and 95% of them are the same as yesterday.’ Scary eh? Means that if you can inject some innovation or change into what you’re thinking on a daily basis, your whole outlook may ultimately change too.

So here are some ideas to help!

 

SELF-IMAGE

And of course stress and low self-esteem is at the heart of a lot of the reasons why many of us comfort eat in the first place. My book Till the Fat Lady Slims is my 2002 weight loss book all about eating like slim people do, following Food Freedom technique, and has a big section about comfort eating – or avoiding it – or at least preventing the bingeing.

But one of the top advisors in the world is Louise Hay. Her books have helped so many. This one looks like it could be another of those titles which help tweak the way you think about the world. Do give it a go!

WHAT ARE YOU HUNGRY FOR?

And finally a fabulous one for Deepak fans, or people wishing to get to the bottom of all the comfort eating for good – ‘What are you Hungry for’ – a wonderful book recommendation for you to help get to the bottom of why you do what you do – in the hope that this info will help you stop doing it! Seems obvious, some of it. But then if it’s obvious, why don’t we do it? If it’s all in the psychology, it’s worth investigating this clever book from one of the best. Try it and tell me what you think.

This week's Monday Essay is designed to help you address several issues which stand in your way.

 

HOW TO MAKE CHANGES - STAND GUARD AT THE DOOR TO YOUR MIND

New year New you - what does it mean to you? Same old same old every January? One of the secrets to achieve change is - rethink your thinking.

Stop saying 'I never lose weight' and begin seriously picturing yourself succeeding - and how different life WILL be WHEN you finally achieve your goals. We are creatures of habit and being able to let go of old behaviours is quite hard. But repetition brings new habits so just start with baby steps and be kind to yourself.

- if exercise is daunting as you're so unfit, just do a tiny bit but do it every day. eg 20 seconds on the bodyblade or 3 minutes on the pilates machine - tomorrow do 21 seconds, the day after do 22 etc - you'll be surprised if you stick to it, how quickly the new behaviours lay the foundations for change. So just start.

- if sudden, strict diet change is too daunting then just change a bit of it at first. If you slip up, don't think you've 'gone and done it', only to binge and start again tomorrow. It's better to have a biscuit or even half a packet than to eat them and then eat half the fridge as well. Be kinder to yourself - act like slim people do and eat LESS afterwards, not more. And begin today.

- rethink quantities - stop at satisfied not at full - if you eat more than a fist sized portion at once (a small plate) or if you can feel your stomach starting to expand, it's probably too much. This revelation had the biggest impact on me when I first learned Freedom Eating a decade ago (full info on this week's QVC Blog - see 'blogs' tab above) and there's more about it in my 2002 book Till the Fat Lady Slims. Try it - it knocks your mind for six at first, especially if you've got 'finish your plate-itis'. BUT it feels so right once you're used to it.  NB - another sign of satisfied I get is taking a deep breath. Often it comes when there's quite a lot left on my plate. NB2 - You can eat the rest of the food later - just wait till you're sufficiently hungry again then it'll taste every bit as good as it did the first time.

- don't eat if you're not SUFFICIENTLY hungry - if you're not, then your body's not ready for food. It's like trying to fill up a petrol tank that's already full - it'll overflow - onto your hips and stomach! So wait till you're at 6 on the hunger scale - where 1 is vaguely peckish and 10 is starving - then foods will taste amazing as your body's ready for it. If you love your food, this will be a life-changer. You have to allow yourself to do this if you're serious about gaining Food Freedom instead of food ruling your life. Be clever if you have to fix family meals. Keep tupperware containers so you can take the leftovers home or get a to-go box if you're out - everybody does it now so don't be scared to do so too.

- choose what you really genuinely want to eat - your body will tell you what it needs as it'll be the thing that tastes the best, or which you feel like most. (If you don't get a clear signal or you feel like all of it, you're probably thirsty - so have a glass of water then fifteen minutes later if you're still hungry it should be a clearer signal.)

This is the system I used to lose 35lb just over a decade ago - just as I left QVC after my first six years there. It works for me - I hope it works for you. To read more please go to Till the Fat Lady Slims on Amazon, (taken from 'the Seven Secrets of Slim People (1998)' which was in turn inspired by 'Diets Don't Work'). BUT the latest science about sugar addiction means it's essential to also become sugar free first, in order for Freedom Eating to work properly straight away.

 

SUGAR - THE BITTER TRUTH

1. More and more press coverage is coming to light now about the dangers of sugar. The best life-changing video I've ever seen is 'Sugar: The Bitter Truth' - Dr Robert Lustig's youtube sensation. Go here to watch it. It's 90 minutes long but full of slides and statistics, amazing facts and unbelievably bad myths - myths which led to the explosion in poor health, because the change to Low Fat should also have been 'low sugar' all those years ago. Dr Lustig is a California endocrinologist who is the leading campaigner against sugar - and one of my modern day heroes. He's also funny and very watchable. This is his lecture at the university of california that kick-started the campaign.

I watched it four times - when I found out what was in it I had to show it to friends and loved ones and watched it with them. It was how I discovered that only the liver can metabolize sugar, fructose (bad) and high fructose corn syrup (even worse). Plus, no matter how much you eat, or exercise, a third of all the calories eaten in these types of sugar is converted straight into fat. So EVERY CALORIE IS NOT EQUAL. And that Fruit has fibre which counteracts fruit sugar (fructose) and should be eaten whole. By contrast, juices are fattening, they shouldn't be one of your five veg or fruit a day (which should really be 7 or 9 a day and mostly veg, but that's for another week!) Anyway, please watch the video - or some of the shorter versions of it on youtube. 

Dr Robert Lustig has also now written a book - 'Fat Chance - The Bitter Truth About Sugar' - to support the message. it's great.

2. Also - maybe first - watch the 14 minute report on the US TV Show 'Sixty Minutes', 'is Sugar Toxic' for some more shocking facts about the associations between sugar and illnesses. Other new scientific studies are proving the awful impact of sugars on the body - what it's doing to increase bad LDL cholesterol and cardio-vascular disease. Then even more shocking, how if you limit sugar it decreases your chances of getting certain kinds of cancers. It's a report from a 2012 US TV show, so watch it and make up your own mind. It's only 14 minutes, so go for it now. 

3. Want to know even more? Read nutritionist and macrobiotic consultant Marlene Watson Tara's guide - 'Fat Burning Simplified' - with even more info about why you should limit simple sugars across the board - including in white bread etc - in order to allow the fat burning switch to kick in. Utterly illuminating and possible the answer you've been searching for as to why you think you're eating 'right' but still not losing pounds, or you've plateaued. The solution could be in this link. It'll take about ten minutes to read it, so please do. 

4. And even the BBC has some helpful info about sugar - this time about how it's addictive in the same way opium or other drugs are. And that the more you eat, the less you get the reward stimulation in your brain, which means you have to eat more and more to get the same reward. Sound familiar? Watch 'Addicted to Pleasure' and find out more.

5. This interesting article mentions IQS - the I Quit Sugar programme, for even more 'how to' info, and support.  

If it seems impossible to cut right down on sugar, don't think of it that way. Just think of it as being curious. Then more assess when you've read up.

 

KNOWING VERSUS UNDERSTANDING

All of this info may help you KNOW versus just UNDERSTAND. And if you know as well as understand then you can innately make the right choices without relying on 'willpower' alone. How liberating to then take steps to change the things you want to - and not be a slave to a substance that makes big money for others. To wean yourself off sugar is the next step and there are plenty of resources online to do that - Marlene's website has a helpful sweet vegetable tea if you absolutely have to have sweetness, for instance, and more to read if you want to lose weight.

Google other articles and be your own investigative reporter to transform your life THIS time.

 

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF WEIGHT LOSS

Yes there's probably a book of that name out there somewhere. But basically if you're using food for comfort then that's , again, a whole 'nother issue. But it underpins your reliance as food as a prop. Using food to stop a hurt or if you're bored is not what food is for - food is fuel. Help yourself find out what you really need by reading or listening to some fabulous self-help books - as recommended on my current QVC Blog, here are a few of them -

 

‘Your Erroneous Zones - Escape Negative Thinking and Take Control of Your Life' by Wayne Dyer (pictured)

‘You Can Heal Your Life’ by Louise Hay – get the audio book if you can, she’s a fab speaker. So is Wayne.

‘Excuses Begone’ by Wayne Dyer – unveiling the ‘no more excuses’ approach to getting on with it.

‘The Biology of Belief’ by Dr Robert Lipton – a truly life-changing examination of what makes us tick.

These are ones which I’ve personally read and can whole-heartedly vouch for – seriously if you’re up for sorting your life out, do please try one – or all of them.

These could all help to break the cycle of using food for comfort. If you can be kinder to yourself and go on a journey of self-discovery, it'll maybe mean the difference between failing again, and finally changing your life and getting Back to You - the you you want to be.
