Another top story from one of my fave witty romcom authors, Jane Lovering. Jane is fresh back from this week's RONA awards (Romantic Novelists' Association Dinner was on Monday.) There, she won 'shorter romantic novel' category award with 'Christmas at the Little Village School,' so I'm pleased to include that one too as a second Book of the Week! Go here for more info and congrats to Jane!

Also to Julie Cohen for best Contemporary Novel award! See previously for the review of her fab novel Together, and do get it if you want a truly thought-provoking read.

However since Jane's Little Teashop of Horrors, also a second nomination for her in the Romantic Comedy category, is the one I've just downloaded on audiobook, it's this week's main choice.

Amy Knowles has always been the plain sidekick to her pretty best friend, Jules. And whilst the tearoom they both work in on the Monkpark Hall estate in Yorkshire is not exactly awash with eligible bachelors, it's obvious where the male attention is concentrated.

There is one man who notices Amy. Joshua Wilson also works at Monkpark, where he flies his birds of prey for visitor entertainment. He lives a lonely existence, but he has reasons for choosing isolation - and in Amy he may have found somebody who understands.

Then a management change brings slick and well-spoken Edmund Evershott to Monkpark. He's interested in Amy too, but for what reason? Josh suspects the new manager is up to no good - but will Amy?

I always enjoy Jane's books. I've read almost all of her previous novels which have been released on audiobook. I find her turn of phrase refreshing and original, witty and fun, just what I need for some of my long car journeys and her stories are compelling and moreish. So I would never hesitate to get the next one... and the next... and the next...

Regulars of this blog will know I'm a big fan of Jane Lovering's witty, quirky writing style and larger than life, flawed but compelling characters. Fellow Choc Lit author jane now has over xxx books out on Amazon and whilst I await the arrival of the latest on audiobook, I'm delving back into the backlist with StarStruck.

Am loving this tale of two hotties - Gethryn the Welsh TV soap super stud and Jack, aka The Ice Man, the script writer and show runner behind the top TV series that heroine Skye encounters on her trip to a sci fi convention in deepest hottest Nevada. I always love how Jane interweaves an intriguing back story into her tales, and this one is another that makes me look forward to getting back in the car to continue the audiobook as I want to find out what happens.

"Our memories define us don't they? And Skye Threppel lost most of hers in a car crash that stole the lives of her best friend and fiancé. It's left scars, inside and out, which have destroyed her career and her confidence. Skye hopes a trip to meet the actor she idolises will help her heal. But she bumps into mysterious Sci-fi writer Jack Whitaker first. An instant rapport soon becomes intense attraction, but Jack fears they can't have a future if Skye ever finds out about his past... Will their memories tear them apart, or can they build new ones together?"

You can see how Jane's writing style develops into what she has now become - even more original and funny than Star Struck - so hurry up Choc Lit, get the next one done on audiobook so I can listen to it on my long car journeys to and from Devon!

Till the Fat Lady Slims 2017 version - 'how I broke free from Food Prison forever'

now available in bookshops to order, and online on all platforms, as well as on amazon here.

I LOVED this book. A little slow to drag me in at the start - most are. But once I realised how witty some of Jane's writing is, it had me yearning for more. Some of the clever inventive turns of phrase made me laugh out loud when listening to this, driving along in the car. Melody Grove the narrator has a good comic delivery too - refreshing when too many narrators just don't get the comedic element which is enormously frustrating sometimes. But not with this one.

Jane is a fellow Choc Lit author and has several books to her name so I will be buying more for sure and it's no surprise that she is an award winner.

I love that her hero is not a typical alpha - he is a geek with a PhD in astrophysics and a tortured past that is a match for heroine Molly's own disastrous love life. The secondary characters are compelling too, and the twists and turns in the romance were believable. Really entertainingly written and highly recommended. Others think so too hence lots of good reviews.

Next on my list is the one with which she won the Romantic Novel of the Year 2012 award. Fabulous!

A Top 500 reviewer on Amazon says -

This is a light romance set in Yorkshire with much of the wit that I am coming to appreciate in this author's books.

Molly is riding her horse Stan across the moors when she comes across a naked man (as you do). She takes him home to sort him out and from there develops one of those love stories where every step forward seems to be marched with a couple towards the rear. I usually get very frustrated with stuttering love stories because the protagonists could usually sort everything out if they only talked to one another but in this novel the author relates all their issues to their characters and what has happened to them in their past - this makes the story much more likely.

Molly is a deeply hurt woman who has come to Yorkshire to escape and has only her friend Caro for company. Phinn has inherited a semi-derelict cottage and has taken up residence in order to get away from his world too - he is a physicist and more than slightly nerdy which is nice and unusual. Phinn's friend Link has his own issues too. These wounded people recover in the Yorkshire landscape and begin to forge new relationships. This process is great fun as we are engaged with the characters and also because the author has some great lines - this book is written with a lot of wit and humour which raises it above the average.

This is a quick and engaging read. It uses the Yorkshire landscape to its best advantage and is full of humour and amusing moments. The characters are flawed but human and the author wraps it all up in a very satisfying manner

'this week i've chosen to feature another of Jane lovering's super books because I love her writing so much. The first one I read was 'How I wonder what you are' and it drew me in with some brilliantly witty one liners, just the type of unpredictable and creative writing i like to read - or rather - listen to!

Having just finished listening to the audiobook of Jackie Kabler's 'Dead Dog Day' (my fellow QVC presenter and author signed by Accent Press) - which is very well narrated by the way - I've downloaded Please Don't Stop the Music for my next read. i'm going to my nephew's wedding this weekend followed by another trip down to Devon for some er... errands, so it'll keep me company and I'm expecting more entertaining creativity from the talented Jane!

Winner of the 2012 Romantic Novel of the Year Award. --Romantic Novelists' Association

~From the start I found myself connecting with the characters. They were believable and I could imagine them as real people. The two main characters, Ben and Jemina both have underlying secrets and as the book progresses, are hinted at. This made me want to keep reading to find out all the whys and hows .... ... I actually found it rather more upmarket than other chick lit. Yes, it was easy to read but with a great plot, really believable characters and lots of laugh-out-loud moments - I loved it! Jane Lovering is definitely an author on my reading list now - I can't wait for her next book!~

Needed a cold shower after reading some parts of this BUT was an excellent book. Didn't want to put it down so read it in a couple of sittings. Hope your future books are as good. Well done Debbie.

Book of the week – fellow Choc Lit author Jane Lovering’s The Art of Christmas – currently 99p. With 19 out of 22 five star reviews on Amazon and doing well in their charts -

WINNER - ROMANTIC NOVEL OF THE YEAR 2012 with PLEASE DON'T STOP THE MUSIC, Jane Lovering has done it again. This tale is a perfect NOVELLA for a speedy read to get you in a festive mood.

What if the memories of Christmas past were getting in the way of Christmas future?
It’s been nearly two years since Harriet lost Jonno, but she’s finally decided that it’s time to celebrate Christmas again. Then she finds a stash of graphic novels belonging to her comic book-loving husband in the attic, and suddenly her world is turned upside down once more. With the help of eccentric comic book dealer Kell Foxton, she discovers that the comics collected by Jonno are not only extremely valuable, but also hold the key to his secret life – a life that throws Harriet’s entire marriage and every memory she has of her husband into question. As Harriet grows closer to Kell, she begins to feel like she could learn to love Christmas again – but first, she needs to know the truth.’

Sounds great eh? Get it on eBook from amazon here now whilst it’s still only 99p – currently doing well in the kindle charts. Click here

Audiobook of the weekFall of Giants Well I finally finished it! Haha! And it was good. It wasn’t fabulous but it was fascinating. I did it in stages – but after about a third of it, did start really wanting to find out about the characters. HOWEVER the era was fascinating. What Ken Follett does is manage to interweave real historical facts and settings into an intricately plotted tale. The voices are really well done on the audiobook too, by narrator John Lee, whose accents span the globe at the time of World War One. It’s the era I’m researching for my French or Dutch book, so very timely. Hear how working class pitch against upper class as the world changes forever. More here.

Her book is getting lots of attention in the literary press, and she was one of my authors of the week at one point a while ago on my Read it Write it Sell it blog. I promise I will share the excitement as the release date gets nearer – have just been invited to her fabulous launch party at the end of January too. So proud of Jo. Needed a cold shower after reading some parts of this BUT was an excellent book. Didn't want to put it down so read it in a couple of sittings. Hope your future books are as good. Well done Debbie.

More here.

Pic of The Trouble with Goats and Sheep Signing of a different kind I’d like to alert you to a big noise coming up in January in the book world and proud to say Joanna Cannon is a fellow Julie Cohen alumni. Since we met at the writing course a few years ago, Jo has gone on to get a super deal with Harper Collins after winning a comp at the annual York Festival. Am so proud of my friend! And how about these lovely cards she’d signing here too?! #Proud#2
