~Yay! My colleague and lovely mate from QVC, Jackie Kabler is back on track with the third in her Cora Baxter mysteries.

I liked Jackie's first two books A LOT! They were on audiobook and I hope this one is soon, too. BUT if you have Amazon Alexa, she can now 'read' you the kindle version anyway!

Jackie's character, Cora is a newsreader - and I'm sure a lot of Jackie's inspiration comes from her time in the GMTV reporting role that so many people remember her from. The dialogue is realistic, the storylines compelling and each novel is well worth a read. If you want an enjoyable romp to keep you amused on a journey or to get to know a new hero, check out her three Baxter books.

After a stressful week, TV reporter Cora Baxter is ready for a quiet weekend. What she isn't counting on is witnessing the shocking death of a young woman on her way home. Cora discovers that seventeen-year-old Leanne has been protesting against a new housing development, angering the powerful establishment. Leanne s death is ruled a suicide but, when puzzling information comes to light, Cora decides to investigate further. She might not know what an unscrupulous businessman, a suspended police officer and hate-mail sending neighbours have to do with the case but she does know there is a news story there. With her eccentric camera crew on hand to help, can Cora work out what happened in the days before Leanne s death? And was it really suicide after all?

Jackie's done it again, proclaim the already glowing five star reviews on Amazon. Yes my QVC pal and talented author Jackie Kabler's second in the Cora Baxter series takes us on another romp behind the scenes in the newsroom of her 'fictional' character...

Cora Baxter is back - and this time, she's facing the most important deadline of her career... When TV reporter Cora Baxter attends the scene of a murder in a London park, she's horrified to discover the victim is someone she knows and devastated when one of her best friends is charged with the crime. Suddenly the fun-filled life of Cora and her eccentric camera crew takes a darker turn. Cora is convinced that her friend is innocent, but with seemingly solid evidence, the police investigation team reluctantly led by Cora's boyfriend DCI Adam Bradberry believe the case is closed. With a trail of clues that leads all the way to New York, can Cora find out the truth before the trial begins or is it already too late?

I loved the audiobook of 'Dead Dog Day' so I'm looking forward very much to the next tale following Cora's haphazard detective work. It should be uploaded soon, Jackie told me this week!

From Amazon -

"Once again Jackie Kabler has written a highly entertaining read and I spent some delightful hours engrossed reading it. I have to say that I actually enjoyed it even more than 'The Dead Dog Day' and that's a brilliant book! Like in the previous book, the author shows an exceptional ability to mix and balance humour, drama, suspense and romance seamlessly and effortlessly while weaving a very well-written, clever, intriguing plot, brimful of highly realistic characters and believable dialogue. The numerous twists and turns the author plants along the way throws the story into a direction I certainly wasn't expecting." Top 1000 reviewer - great accolade!

Book of the week – Dead Dog Day

OMG another QVC colleague becomes  a first-time author, this time our lovely Jackie Kabler – and hers is available in some bookshops too as it’s with publisher Accent press. Go here to read about it on her QVC blog  A murder in a newsroom and the weekend from hell for Cora Baxter, breakfast TV reporter (that was Jackie’s job! See my little Q&A with her to find out if it’s a bit more close to home than she’ll admit!...

Jackie says –

“The book is called The Dead Dog Day, and it’s what the book industry calls “cosy crime” – a sort of mix between chick lit and a murder mystery, set in a TV newsroom.”

When your Monday morning begins with a dead dog and ends with a dead boss, you know it's going to be one of those days. And breakfast TV reporter Cora Baxter has already had the weekend from hell, after the man she'd planned a fabulous future with unceremoniously dumped her. Now Cora's much-hated boss has been murdered - the list of suspects isn't exactly short, but as the enquiry continues the trail leads frighteningly close to home. Why is Cora's rival, glamorous, bitchy newsreader Alice Lomas, so devastated by their boss's death? What dark secrets are Cora's camera crew hiding? And why has her now ex-boyfriend vanished? The race to stop the killer striking again is on...

Lorraine Kelly with whom Jackie worked, says Jackie has real insider knowledge and it shows. A proper page-turning thriller. I couldn't put it down! --Lorraine Kelly

Q&A with our lovely new author colleague!

1. Give us a teaser about your new book, who is the heroine?

It's about a TV news reporter called Cora Baxter. She works on a breakfast TV show and one morning her boss is murdered. Cora is assigned to cover the story for the show and ends up getting dragged into the investigation in unexpected ways. It's essentially a murder mystery, but there's humour and romance in there too.

2. Is any of the story based on your real life experiences? Reminders what you used to do.

Absolutely! I worked in news as a reporter and newsreader for twenty years before I joined QVC, and spent nearly ten years with GMTV.  Virtually everything in the book (apart from the dead boss!) is based on things that actually happened to me during those years. Some might seem a bit far-fetched, but believe me, they are all true. Breakfast television is a crazy world!

 3. Have you always known you wanted to write a book, is this your first one that you've completed? Did you used to be a writer?

I loved writing even at school, and dreamed of one day seeing a book with my name on it, but I didn't get round to starting one until I was in my forties! The Dead Dog Day is the first one I've ever written, so I was so lucky to get a publishing deal with it, I'm absolutely thrilled.

4. How did it come to be published, tell us your amazing story.

The book, which I started when I was still working for GMTV, originally started as more of a romantic comedy, but it wasn’t really working and there was no interest in it whatsoever when I sent it out to a few agents. Then I left GMTV to work freelance and life got even busier so the book was put away for about six years. When I joined QVC, where I work four days a week, I decided to get it out again, and rewrite it as a murder mystery. This time when I started sending it out I got several rejections but then a sudden flurry of interest, until one crazy day when I suddenly had an agent and three publishing deals on offer. I accepted a three-book deal with the fabulous Accent Press, for a series of murder mysteries featuring the same characters. It was one of the most exciting days of my life!

French or Dutch update

Saw ‘Suffragette’ last week and it spurred me on to do some more research. Watching some old footage and documentaries on Youtube reminded me how archaic some of society was a century ago. In the USA some states made it illegal to teach the science that the world was more than 5000 years old, until the 1930s!  I’ve loved watching some of the old interviews with silent movie stars done in the 1950s when of course they were still alive, recalling the magic days of early film and giving me excellent points of reference to use in my novel. Mine is set around 1921 at the start of the early revolution in women’s sex lives in Britain and is based on a true story!... More next week!

Best wishes

Hallowe’en Update This week I’ve been putting the finishing touches to the collection of thirteen short spooky stories in the upcoming Hallowe’en Anthology. It’s now going on sale October 17th, but catch the freebie Oct 28th-1st Nov, with a special Facebook online party for Hallowe’en on 31st! Below I introduce you to two more of the authors featured. Some of the stories are very good I must say!

Jackie Kabler’s Book Deal And talking of authors, how about fellow QVC presenter Jackie Kabler getting a book deal with Accent press! Soooo proud of her – and she’s so humble about it, such a lovely lady. Can’t wait to read it. Jackie says –

while I was still working at GMTV six years ago, I started writing a murder mystery novel. When I left the breakfast show to go freelance, I thought I’d have time to finish it, but work became so frantic that the book was put to one side. This year, I finally took it out again, dusted it off and got it finished. Then two weeks ago, after nervously starting to send it off to literary agents and publishers, I found myself in the frankly astonishing position of being offered book deals by THREE different publishing companies. Fortunately I had by then acquired myself a wonderful literary agent who took over the reins and led me in the right direction. The result? I am still slightly in shock but thrilled to announce that I have signed a three book deal with the fabulous Accent Press, home to some of the biggest names in women’s fiction. The first of my crime novels will be released in 2015, with two more in the same series to follow. It’s a childhood dream come true, and I can’t tell you how delighted, thrilled and happy I am!”

And we are too, Jackie, for you! More here, and I will keep you informed when they become available!

Choc Lit Update Meanwhile my own book deal is at editing stage – Hawaiian Affair and the Hawaiian Trilogy have been signed to Choc Lit, for those who don’t know! It’s a fabulous publishing house – go here to find some new authors to read! I’m currently listening to an audio book by Christina Courtenay (I have several on the go at once for different moods!) Do you? Leave me a comment below or let me know by emailing me This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Audio Book of the Week  So here’s what I’m reading at the moment – Broadchurch. I thought I’d go for the audiobook from Audible rather than watch the TV series on catch up. BUT I’ll probably binge-watch it afterwards too since Olivia Coleman is in it and she’s one of my fave actresses. So far it’s capturing my imagination – even though I think I remember who ‘dunnit,’ from the coverage around the TV series, I’m enjoying the cosy crime element to it. There’s even a psychic! Lol!

However, not everything I make myself finish listening to gets a rave recommendation. I can’t say go listen to The Child by Sebastien Fitzek. I wanted to like it – Andy Serkis is one of the actors in it and it’s read like a play, rather than a single narrator. BUT I’m not at all sure that’s preferable – you’ve only got to have one or two be under par and it spoils it. Sadly for me several were. Also the way it was written was too melodramatic – even though it was read by one of my top narrators, Robert Glenister (he reads J K Rowling’s ‘Robert Galbraith’ mysteries.) Some will enjoy it, but I didn’t so much especially combined by the theme of the story – a paeodophile ring (eurgh – and no, I didn’t realise, just as I didn’t realise that The Paying Guests had a sub-theme of lesbianism! Glad I read the latter though, that was very well done by Juliet Stephenson – see archive for review of that one.) I actually thought it was more about reincarnation. Which it wasn’t, eventually. Overall 6.5 out of ten.
