Book launch parties; how to be a writer; and 'Gray Mountain' by John Grisham is book of the week.
27 January 2016

Am off to lovely Joanna Cannon’s book launch tomorrow night – for her debut novel, the ‘one to watch’ for Harper Collins this year – ‘The Trouble with Goats and Sheep’ – which is making waves and getting attention all over the media aat the moment, bless her. For more about the book launch party, and a chat with Jo, click on the QVC tab at the top where you’ll find my new QVC blog on Friday afternoon, with lots of pics etc. Meanwhile, her book of the week blog is here from last week.

TACOM update.

Been asked to go do a test to narrate my own book, Take a Chance on Me – am over the moon – I might be rubbish! But it seems that Howes the audiobook producer have bought into TACOM quite heavily with a good advance offer, and want to produce the audible version for a summer release! Just in time to hopefully coincide with the eBook of the follow up – which I’m calling Try it for the First Time Club. Just as TACOM was originally Hawaiian Affair, so TiFFTC will be the original sequel Hawaiian Retreat, but with a different ending and elements of the prequel Hawaiian Escape in it as well. An ‘other world’ follow up! And a really good ‘TiFFT’ of my own! Regulars will know I’ve been doing ‘try it for the first time’ events for years now, and that’s why one of my characters ends up with her own online column doing just that! Exciting times…

Book Of the Week – Gray Mountain -  by John Grisham.

I would have possibly chosen a short steamy novel called ‘Sweet Girl’ by Cristin harber but to be honest the narration from Jeffrey Kafer was one which made me find myself taking the mickey out of the way he went into a hoarse whisper at the end of nearly every sentence, so much so that I couldn’t hear the story in the car. Grrr! So I won’t recommend the audio book – although the story was ok and quite well done.

So – Gray Mountain – now I’m a Grisham fan, loving cleverly written legal dramas. And this one has kicked off well. I read Rogue Lawyer before this one, and I can see where he’s going with his writing, it’s as though it’s being created with a TV series in mind. But I quite like the episodic nature of that. So this one, so far is good. I’m including it now as I know I’ll have finished it next week when I’ll be writing about something else. So here’s a lowdown and the links and you can let me know what you think too!

One week ago, Samantha Kofer was a third-year associate at New York City's largest law firm. Now she is an unpaid intern in a legal aid clinic deep in small-town Appalachia. When Lehman Brothers collapsed, she lost her job, her security, her future. As she confronts real clients with real problems, she finds herself a world away from her past life of corporate fat cats and fatter bonuses.

This is coal country. Meth country. The law is different here. And standing up for the truth means putting your life on the line. America's greatest storyteller brings us a new masterpiece of legal courage and gripping suspense - and his finest heroine since The Pelican Brief.

Ties in with the Big Short being my top film this week and best film for a long time, too. Get it on amazon here.

LATE EDIT - having finished this book now, I must admit the ending let it down. I won't say more but I was less than impressed with one of the major characters. John Grisham's latest ones in the last few years have been nowhere near as gripping or well thought through as his initial offerings, I must say.
