The Girl in the Painting is the second book in the Rossetti Mysteries series, published by Choc Lit. The first book in the series, Some Veil Did Fall, was based on Pre-Raphaelite poetry, The Girl in the Painting is based on Pre-Raphaelite painting, and the third book in the series, The Girl in the Photograph, is based - surprise, surprise - on Pre-Raphaelite photography, an art-form made famous by the likes of Julia Margaret Cameron. The Girl in the Painting was out in paperback on 7th March, the same day as The Girl in the Photograph is published in ebook form – very exciting!

All three books are interlinked, but they can be read as stand-alone novels. And all three books are also timeslips, with a paranormal mystery to solve, romance and hauntings. The settings range from Whitby on the North Yorkshire coast, to London, the Tate Gallery, Cornwall and back to North Yorkshire – this time to Staithes, another coastal town with a rich artistic heritage and links to the Newlyn Group of Artists, through the very famous artist, Dame Laura Knight.

 Kirsty says -

I hope you’ll enjoy all the books in the series, and maybe even come to love the characters as much as I do! Happy reading.

Quotes:

Wow! This had everything - love stories, ghosts, obsessions ...  It's a time slip/ghost story involving the present day and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Having long been a fan of all things PRB and having been to see their paintings more times than I care to think about, I was really looking forward to this book.
Ann Cooper, Annie’s Book Corner on The Girl in the Painting

****

With brilliantly connected contemporary and historical scenes, eerie ghostly sightings and hauntings, stories desperate to be told, and romance that keeps people together as well as tears them apart, this is a novel that you will devour from start to finish, and then feel empty as you leave the artistic world behind.
Sorcha O’Dowd, Waterstones Bookseller and Reviewer at Old Victorian Quill on The Girl in the Painting

****

Kirsty Ferry has written a perfect combination of history and present day. Becky and Jon are great main characters. They both have a good heart and that makes them very likeable. I enjoyed reading this story very much and think Kirsty Ferry has told an amazing tale about history and future that ends in a great and very fitting finale.
Suze Lavender, Suze Likes, Loves, Finds & Dreams on Some Veil Did Fall

                                                                                ****

…A gentle romance mixed with goose bumps are written with a stealthy hand and solid plot. ….“Some Veil Did Fall” delivers chills to a reader as if a ghost were reading over their shoulder!
Natasza at InD’tale Magazine on Some Veil Did Fall.

                                                                                ****

I am a big fan of this particular publisher, almost anything they choose is well worth a read but when it has a slightly wacky, unreal feel then it’s a bit special.   …This is pure charm, a delightful romp.

BIO

Kirsty is from the North East of England and won the English Heritage/Belsay Hall National Creative Writing competition in 2009 with the ghostly tale Enchantment. She has also written North East based novels, short stories and articles for magazines such as Weekly News, Peoples Friend, Ghost Voices and It’s Fate.

Her timeslip novel, Some Veil Did Fall, a paranormal romance set in Whitby, was published by Choc Lit in Autumn 2014. This was followed by another Choc Lit timeslip, The Girl in the Painting in February 2016 and The Girl in the Photograph in March 2017. The experience of signing Some Veil Did Fall in a quirky bookshop in the midst of Goth Weekend in Whitby, dressed as a recently undead person was one of the highlights of her writing career so far!

Kirsty’s day-job involves sharing a Georgian building with an eclectic collection of ghosts – which can sometimes prove rather interesting.

The Girl in the Painting

What if you thought you knew a secret that could change history?

Whilst standing engrossed in her favourite Pre-Raphaelite painting - Millais's Ophelia - Cori catches the eye of Tate gallery worker, Simon, who is immediately struck by her resemblance to the red-haired beauty in the famous artwork.

The attraction is mutual, but Cori has other things on her mind. She has recently acquired the diary of Daisy, a Victorian woman with a shocking secret. As Cori reads, it soon becomes apparent that Daisy will stop at nothing to be heard, even outside of the pages of her diary ...

Will Simon stick around when life becomes increasingly spooky for Cori, as she moves ever closer to uncovering the truth about Daisy's connection to the girl in her favourite painting?

The Girl in the Photograph

What if the past was trying to teach you a lesson?

Staying alone in the shadow of an abandoned manor house in Yorkshire would be madness to some, but art enthusiast Lissy de Luca can’t wait. Lissy has her reasons for seeking isolation, and she wants to study the Staithes Group – an artists’ commune active at the turn of the twentieth century.

Lissy is fascinated by the imposing Sea Scarr Hall – but the deeper she delves, the stranger things get. A lonely figure patrols the cove at night, whilst a hidden painting leads to a chilling realisation. And then there’s the photograph of the girl; so beautiful she could be a mermaid … and so familiar.

As Lissy further immerses herself, she comes to an eerie conclusion: The occupants of Sea Scarr Hall are long gone, but they have a message for her – and they’re going to make sure she gets it.

All in all a fabulous series of books. I'm just reading the first one, via audiobook and liking it so far! I love the fact that there are two more after this one - once you've i nvested in a book and its characters and premise, it's nice to take a short cut to the next set up, being familiar with them already.

Have a lovely week

d

Book of the Week is actually a reprise of my mentor Julie Cohen's latest novel. Launched in August, it's called 'Falling' in the UK. But in the US it's 'the Day of Second Chances' and it's fabulous.

Hence the audiobook title, and that's what I've been 'reading' this week.

WIN A SIGNED PAPERBACK COPY! All you have to do is to leave me a comment below - it won't show up immediately so don't worry! And the chances are pretty good so do enter! I will randomly pick the winner and contact you via the email you register with, closes Friday 14th October. The paperback copy of Falling, (aka The Day of Second Chances in the US and on audiobook) will be sent soon afterwards!

Julie always gives us a heartfelt, carefully-woven tale of relationships and emotions and this one is no exception. What is always original though is what the heroines 'are.' In other books it might have been their job or some aspect of their personality or being. In this one, it's a bit of all three - based around three women from the same family, from different generations. The youngest is struggling with her infatuation with her best pal, who is also female. The oldest is a stroppy Doctor character - whom I love - Honor is feisty despite having a broken hip. And Jo the mother is in between both of them, with an interesting back story.

The audiobook is read by Jilly Bond, a quirky older narrator and after I got used to her distinctive enunciation I really liked the way she reads the novel - I pictured an old teacher when I was at school during storytime. Think Penelope Wilton in Downton. But her dialogue performance is excellent.

"Honor’s secret threatens to rob her of the independence she’s guarded ferociously for eighty years.

Jo’s secret could smash apart the ‘normal’ family life she’s fought so hard to build.

Lydia’s could bring her love - or the loss of everything that matters to her.

Grandmother, mother and daughter – three women whose lives are falling apart. But one summer’s day, a single dramatic moment will force their secrets into the open.

Can they save each other from falling?"

Having been a Richard and Judy book of the month author, Julie gets attention when she publishes a new book - eg

"Tears you apart and puts you together again" (Katie Fforde)

"Gripping, intriguing, unique and gut-wrenchingly poignant . . . brilliantly original" (Heat)

"Beautifully crafted and utterly compelling . . . reflects perfectly the ecstatic highs and thundering lows of love, friendship and family." (Lucy Robinson)

"This moving novel will make you laugh and cry in equal measures and you won't be able to put it down" (Sunday Express)

And on amazon, one reviewer writes -

"...I love this book. I love the fact that the entre narrative discuses how strong women are and that they are even stronger when they support each other. The bonds between grandmother, mother and daughter are also fully explored, as is the delicate relationship between mother and daughter-in-law.

This book really was like a breath of fresh air and will make you evaluate the relationships that you have with the important women in your own life."

Former police officer offers consulting service - how brilliant - access to the horse's mouth for a fact-check, from Stuart Gibbon a former DCI in London - he says :

'I've helped writers with many different topics from the role of the Coroner in suspicious deaths, how the police promotion system works to forensic procedures and Court sentencing guidelines. One of the most interesting was explaining how the police would deal with a person in prison who had confessed to a serious crime (you may recognise this if you've read 'The Missing', by CL Taylor if you haven't keep an eye out for it!!!)

I also talk with Writing Groups on the subject of 'Murder investigation' and have a couple of national conferences booked for later this year as a speaker. I take the audience through a Murder case (using a generic case study) from discovery of a body to the arrest and detention of a suspect, explaining the challenges facing Detectives in such cases.'

Wedding Bells for Nurse Connie is by the talented author Jean Fullerton. The 1940s were not an easy time for a midwife! But as a former district nurse, Jean writes convincingly and authentically about the ups and downs of nurse Millie and nurse Connie in that era. Great audiobooks too.

Nurse Connie Byrne has lived and worked through the Second World War, has celebrated its ending with friends and patients in the East End of London and is now enjoying a fresh new chapter in her life and looking forward to her wedding. But, as many a young bride-to-be has proved, the path of true love never runs smooth....

One reviewer says -

"I loved Wedding Bells for Connie from start to finish and as usual, wished I hadn't come to the end. If you are interested in pre-war life among the medical services and the poor people of the cities, then this is a must read. My favourite character in this book is Dr. McCausland (Hari) because ........ well, you have to read it to see what I mean!! I can't wait for Jean 'Fullerton's next book"

More from Nurse Connie on amazon here! Looking forward to reading it on audio book! And more from Jean Fullerton here.

Other news -

- the Historical Novelists' Society weekend in Oxford, HNS2016Oxford, was good value. It wasn't that expensive either, given what was included, IMO. Go here to find out more about next year's. I thoroughly enjoyed the keynote addresses from Melvyn Bragg and also Tracy Chevalier (Girl with a Pearl Earring), and the lovely Jean Fullerton, workshopping about period detail. Plus some super colourful extras, about which I posted pics on Facebook here! They are international – next year’s is in Colorado I think! This was my first and I did enjoy it. There were several historical demonstrations, like a re-creation of the Bayeux tapestry, only done in English; authentic mediaeval clothes worn by a monk, dyed with plants. And this one, featuring a very scary knight! Very entertaining. And their main website is here for more info about writing a period piece.

- Go here for some super writing tips from top authors including William Boyd, in the Guardian - from 'show don't tell' to observation, click here.

- and none other than a TED talk all about what makes a best seller - if you love a good video, watch it here!

- Plus - there’s a new book out from one of my fellow authors, E. M. Davey, author of Foretold by Thunder. His new thriller is out now - here's the Amazon link to buy it - click here. The Napoleon Complex is intriguing.

Napoleon stood before a stormy sky. In his hand was a scroll, and on that scroll were characters. Etruscan characters. How was Napoleon able to coordinate his armies over great distances in an age before radio or the telegraph? What lay behind his string of astonishingly accurate predictions? And how did the son of a provincial Corsican family raise himself up to be the most powerful man on earth? The second instalment of the epic Book of Thunder series catapults reporter Jake Wolsey into the seismic geopolitical events of the nineteenth century. But if Napoleon Bonaparte obtained the ability to predict the future, why was he ever defeated?

Looks good!

Published in My Charity

A very timely book of the week - just noticed the byline to one of my most-recommended self-help books of all time - Wayne Dyer's 'Your Erroneous Zones.'

'Escape Negative Thinking and Take Control of Your Life' seems a very pertinent message - especially this week, given the big EU referendum! But more importantly, how it can help most people deal with most aspects of their life not turning out to be the way they wanted it to be.

I remember the first time I encountered Wayne Dyer - courtesy of a Tony Robbins interview with him on a series of audiobooks called Powertalk (you can sometimes find them on Amazon.) Then I got one or two of Wayne's books and I was hooked. I was happy to meet him too, when i returned to QVC in autumn 2009. His sad passing last year has left a hole iin the world, but his legacy lives on and if you like whta you read there are dozens of other works you can use to help get a reality check on life. I certainly did. I loved some of his catch phrases -

'you'll get over it'

'whether you believe you can or believe you can't you're probably right.'

'give uup your need to be right'

be independent of the good or bad opinion of others'

and many more.

Well this book is as good a place as any to start your self-help journey and of course there's a whole host of other recommendations on my blog here.

I write this as I sit in a wonderful writing retreat called Chez Castillon near Bordeaux. And reflecting on how far I have come in the 16 years since I first discovered Wayne and co, and began my own 'journey' into self-discovery. I cetainly have managed to take control of limiting beliefs in my own life and I hope this book hellps you too.

- Life's a Drag  - a reminder that my hostess at Chez Castillon , Janie Millman, is also a published author. Her 'life's a drag' is also timely considering the discussions about the LGBT community in the news of late. And what's more it's a great book! more here.
