So glad it’s finally here! This weekend we will have our fab table top sale raising funds for the wonderful charity Medical Detection Dogs who help people with type 1 diabetes and also breast cancer is in pipeline, prostate cancer, other serious illnesses that need the owner to be alerted to their condition changing. Go here to find out more about it, but if you’re near Dorking, come down to the village hall behind the Wotton hatch pub RH56QQ 11-5pm – so many familiar faces helping out behind the afternoon tea bar, or helping to run an informal fashion show – Patrick quacker, Criag Rowe, ginetta Veronese, Abi ultrasun (and her UVA scanner), Polly from Imedeen (and their collagen analysis machine), Selin from noNo, poss Russ from Miele, poss Lee hohbein and more - plus the bodyblade bunch will be doing a special tag event to raise funds – and lots more including QVC fashions in mostly medium/14-16, size 7/8 shoes and lots of household stuff from my declutter – things I love but must let go of to raise funds! And the dogs and owners themselves will accompany the charity reps from the organisers.

If we can raise over £2000 we can name a puppy!

Another Story from Medical Detection Dogs

CLAIRE AND MAGIC “Magic and I have been together since September 2013, and life quite simply has not been the same since! It was a tricky decision to make in having an assistance dog for diabetes, especially when I work as a diabetes nurse for children and teenagers. I work at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge and lead the nursing team who help care for and support nearly 300 children, young people and families with diabetes. I’ve had diabetes since I was a teenager myself so it can be pretty useful knowing all the tips and tricks. I am used to people popping in to my office to say hello and ask questions, but since Magic has joined the diabetes team at the hospital I have never been so popular!

Magic now has a very important role in the diabetes clinic – welcoming the children and young people and making sure they are listening when we run teaching sessions. He has heard the sessions so many times he now falls asleep quite quickly and can often be heard snoring under the table. Whenever the office gets a little busy or stressed, he will yawn or have wind, stopping whatever is going on and allows everyone to have a little giggle before getting back on with their work. What is truly amazing is that although he is surrounded by children and young people with diabetes, many of whom come in with low blood glucose levels, he hasn’t alerted to anyone else – something I have to put down to his excellent training by Medical Detection Dogs. Many of our

patients now like to come in and say hello to Magic before saying hello to anyone else – although we don’t want this popularity to go to his head! It seems that the magic of Magic has far exceeded anything that anyone had planned – not only does he have a major role in keeping me

safe every day and helps me live my life, he also is helping many of my patients – making the diabetes clinic a happy and welcoming place. I think every clinic should have one – although, there is only one Magic in this world!” Claire

What would you recommend from your range for me; male, 33, sensitive/reactive skin can get oily, still get blemishes, large pores and the early signs of ageing x I know your products are great for both sensitivity and anti-ageing but didn't know if there was a good starting point for guys?

 

My second question (I hope all the above counts as one!!) I'd love to hear your guilty pleasure! Mine is collecting Lego if you are stuck for ideas!

Rachel Edlich Dawn Robinson, it was truly a perfect storm for the both of us. Liz was looking in the mirror and seeing that Gravity is truly real because is is the OLDER sister…HA! I had to say it because she is so cute!! She wasn't embracing what was looking back at her in the mirror. I was having my own 911 about my skin when I developed Rosacea after my second child and really lost all self confidence. We both looked at each other selfishly and said we need to fix our face no matter what the cost. That is truly what happened. Our moment of adversity we turned into an opportunitiy to change our skin and life. Sister truly on a mission!

Liz Edlich Chris Calvert great question….great question….The Women’s movement ? You mean the Radical Movement : ) !

I really believe that the only ceiling is the one that we impose on ourselves today. I agree that as woman we are mega Radical multi taskers and each industry presents challenges, but it is possible to love your skin again, it is possible to love your life, you just need to be Radical in your approach. Rachel and I have traveled around the world and in the process have been writing our book coming out in January named :GET RADICAL- Life Changing Secrets to Create a Life You Love. We interviewed thousands about what “Beauty “ means to them. And in all of the interviews, no one ever said dark hair , bright eyes, 5”7

In all cases they talked about how someone shows up on the inside that makes them beautiful . So love, giving , authenticity, kindness and generosity is what it blowing away all glass ceilings, combined with a commitment to Get Radical and make a difference.

Liz Edlich sue stewart and Francesca Bumstead - Dark Circels - What are they ? Ha Ha After RADICAL SKINCARE THEY ARE A THING FROM THE [email protected]!!! When you apply your eye cream, go from the inside out , think of your lymphatic drainage as your trash can fro toxins. So move it all out and easy on the alcohol and a bit of sleep helps. But since the last two are hard to come by…. i will use my Radical Eye Reviv elite a religion and pray a little extra xoxoxo

Rachel Edlich Chris Calvert I get that question so much about what flares up Rosacea. Each person has a different experience on what triggers flair ups ranging from spicy food, STRESS, sun, overheating and lack of moisture to the skin. Some people experience a flushing sensation like I did and get red bumps and inflammation. Did I mention the change in HORMONES? You might not feel my pain in this area(darn men), however, that is what triggered everything for me.

Hi all – what a momentous year this has been so far! And one of the biggest moments of my writing career is coming up on QVC.

I don’t know if you’re aware of my ‘Try It For The First Time club?’ For new readers of my weekly blogs here onQVCuk.com, it’s where you do something different, at least once a month, that you’ve never done before. Over the last year I’ve done indoor sky-diving, been a 1950’s announcer in ‘Happy Days the Musical’ and sat four feet away from a beautiful hummingbird on a balcony in LA.

Well I had a big one this week – I signed 3000 books! I’m proudly going to be bringing you my semi-autobiographical weight loss book, the brand new version with added content just for QVC.

Till the Fat Lady Slims 2.0 – the ‘When’ Diet’, is the updated version of my original semi-autobiographical weight loss book and it’s going on air for its first full airing soon. I can’t believe how many have already been allocated via waitlist! It’s item 704285. There have only been 3000 produced though and it’s going fast. It’s a collectors’ special hardback edition that’s been signed.

Transformation During the first Back to You series, many people found the 2002 book on Amazon and began using it and reporting how it was changing their bodies. Lots of lovely members on the Facebook group ‘Back to You QVC’ were losing weight and transforming their relationship around food and posting their updates. For me it was gripping – Debbie S. and Chloe H my other cover girl have both followed the Freedom Eating plan! Signed My lovely mum and sister came with me to the warehouse and we got a bit of a production line going. Me and my pixie helpers started at 9am, and finished just before 3pm, in a warehouse just outside Ipswich. I signed all 3000 in one day, and they’re all now being prepared for delivery to QVC in stages.

Monday 26th 9pm The first official full airing of TTHFLS is during the series-finale of my Back to You, well-being show.  Every week we focus on a well-being theme in my month-long occasional series, and I’m very proud to be bringing you this book – the end result of more than fourteen years of writing, learning and losing weight. Original The 2002 version was first written after following the Freedom Eating principles 14 years ago and I haven’t binged since. And if you want to compare notes, OMG just have a look at the ‘binge management’ section towards the back – see what I used to go through – are you the same? Plus so many other common mistakes people make on their dieting journeys. And we’ve all done them.

The most common reaction I get is ‘it was like reading about myself… so good to see I’m not the only one’.

What is Freedom Eating? It’s based on the secrets of slim people and how your body knows what to do, we just override our key signals. This system helps you identify how to get back to your own natural relationship with food as fuel – not as reward, or solace or revenge. And helps you reclaim your own natural birthright to be slim. It’s just common sense, but it’s my take on an old theme, and it’s my own journey that makes this one different. It’s based on a version of the ‘The Seven Secrets of Slim People’ which is similar to the book  ‘Diets Don’t Work’. Since 2000 many other health and well-being books have come out with other versions of this same common sense and I’m not sure why my one resonates with so many people, but it does. A lot of people have found that this is the one that’s made all the difference.

Freedom. It’s so liberating. Whenever I do the full Freedom Eating, I find it so easy, not hard at all, and it’s like food becomes LESS important in my life every day instead of ruling my every thought and living from meal to meal. Others agree – eg on the ‘Back To You Facebook group. It’s never ceased to amaze me what I learned about how slim people do it and loved putting it in writing all those years ago.

New Version But more than a decade later there is a lot of new info that needed to go in. So I issued an updated version in September last year, including crucial new material, as well as a slightly abridged version of the original. Version 2.0 – the ‘When’ Diet was born! I put it online with its purple cover and it started to inspire people so much that QVC asked me to do a version just for us!

How is it new? The new aqua one is a limited collector’s edition with a bonus chapter inside, not seen elsewhere yet, about my own personal story, in the years I was away from QVC. Plus further links to more exclusive material over on my website! It’s in hardback, as it’s designed to be a reference book, to read over and over again.

Lard These and many more similar testimonials echo how I felt back in the day when I first read about Freedom Eating and began bringing pats of lard into the studio on a tray representing how many pounds I was losing – ultimately two and a half stone. The pic on the book shows a couple of pics from back then – anyone remember those days on QVC?

Chuffed Can’t tell you how delighted it’s making me, to know that so many people are breaking out of ‘food prison’ ‘cos of my writing. The steamy novels went down a storm and that was lovely, but this is a different type of chuffed entirely! Knowing so many people are using it to make their diets easier makes me so proud.

Be prepared to dip into it continually as you gradually adjust whilst your body gets used to listening to its signals and eating like a slim person does.

With over 170 pages of testimonials old and new, it still includes the full, slightly abridged original TTFLS book from 2002 remember – that’s in part three. But parts one and two are crucial to understand why this system works and how it’s NOT a diet plan.

What it’s not. If you’re not prepared to let go of old beliefs this book is not for you. Or if you follow a rigid structure easily, maybe you’re one of the lucky people who go on a diet and stick to it no problem, lose the weight and don’t see what all the fuss is about, then this system is probably not for you.

Part Two has some crucial information which cannot be ignored if you want to get it right – an important chapter that explains why the latest knowledge about certain foods really helps. It makes it easier for me, when I watch all the video links and read all the articles to choose correctly, as it helps me make those decisions more easily. And advice about what to do first on your way to full Freedom Eating. Full freedom eating is where nothing is banned. If being told you can’t have something means you can’t stop thinking about it, this book is for you. The reason is, if you’re like me, the opposite is also true and knowing you ‘can’ means you eat it less. The psychology is fascinating. And this book features a long list of misapprehensions that need to be unlearned, and helps you unlearn them.

She uses it for maintenance and to help stay on traditional diets. She’s an ex-slimming club leader and saw how Freedom eating helped transform my behaviour around food. She and I then co-created The ‘When’ Diet section – designed to help put a stop to those ‘start again tomorrow’ moments and make normal dieting a bit more closely aligned with how your body is supposed to act around food.

If you DO want to use it alongside traditional diets, that works too, it’s what the ‘When’ Diet section is for.

Julia warned me about shoulder ache after her signing of 5000 of her books, so I’m off to find the arnica.

As promised.

Hi all! As promised, I said I'd let you know when the Till the Fat Lady Slims 2.0 - the 'When' Diet came available on QVC. Well it's up online! If you go here and look at 704285 you'll see it's currently on Waitlist. When it comes in the warehouse you'll have secured yours and it'll be on its way - ready for around 26th when it'll feature on the final Back to You show 9pm on QVC UK. It differs from the 2015 version with the purple cover, as this new QVC version has hardback, signature, and it's also got extra content - eg a chapter covering the personal story of when I was away from QVC. 

If you find it hard to stick to a diet, this is for you, or someone you know, certainly if the nine 5* reviews already on there, are anything to go by! I have to warn you though, there are only a finite number, less than 3000 have been made, so don't leave it too long. Thanks to everyone who's got it, keep me informed about how it helps you too.

As I write in my book Till the Fat Lady Slims 2.0 – The ‘When’ Diet, it’s vital to wean yourself off sugar.

Sugar is listed as being linked with all manner of health issues, and crucially it prevents you trusting the signals of your body. It will say ‘give me sugar’ instead of ‘now I want protein/ green veg/ fish’ and will keep you being controlled by the sugar demon in your veins.

All calories are NOT equal.

I began my sugar free journey by slowly giving up sugar in coffee and tea, eg a quarter of a teaspoon less each week over four weeks, giving up ‘treats’ which now seemed like insidious tricks to keep me trapped and to keep my insulin levels too high to shed fat. The next four weeks I then cut down on any sugar as an added ingredient. Within that time I lost a stone.

Hope this all helps. It’s hard, especially at first, but not impossible.

How to tell that you definitely need to cut back

-          You find yourself reaching for a dessert or sugary sweet treat regularly through the day

-          You feel you ‘have’ to end each meal with sugar

-          You tell yourself you ‘can’t’ give up sugar in coffee – ‘can’t’ means you need to

-          You KNOW you are not hungry but your thoughts go to sugar and you find yourself restless till you get some.

-          You have energy peaks then feel exhausted and rely on sweets etc as a pick-me-up.

-          You indulge at Xmas and still in early January you crave sugar again regularly

-          You can’t stop once you’ve started. It’s still not enough. It’s never enough.

You’re not ‘bad.’  It’s ok, you know, once you’ve read the below you’ll begin to understand why it’s not simply about willpower. You’re in the grip of an addiction, caused by ever more sugar in our food.

It’s been happening since the early 1900’s, and consumption exploded after WWII rationing ended. In 1982 a big mistake happened. A massive error in how they read the studies back then meant that instead of demonising sugar AND fat, it was just fat. It should have been ‘eat low sugar and eat low fat’ in order to cut health problems and encourage weight loss. Instead, sugar escaped through the net.  Food giants strove to make lower fat foods taste more palatable so piled in the sugar. Worse, a fruit sugar, fructose, began being used in a pure form. High Fructose Corn Syrup was cheap and helped keep down sugar prices. More than that it was even sweeter than ordinary table sugar, (which is half glucose and half fructose.) This is bad, because pure fructose should not be consumed without the ‘antidote,’ the fibre in the rest of the fruit. It does bad things in the only place it can be metabolised, the liver. Glucose on the other hand, can be used up in every part of the body, but we don’t need added sugar/glucose, because our body can make it from all normal foods including vegetables and complex carbs.

Starting in the liver, a third of all calories we eat as fructose are converted straight back into fat, no matter what exercise we do, no matter what deficit we create in calories and no matter how high our metabolism. (from ‘Sugar the Bitter Truth’ university lecture, see below.) Scary, right? Fructose by-passes the usual appetite-satisfying signals in the body (leptin, grehlin) and leaves us unsatiated. Fructose in the brain acts like cocaine – rats eating both were seven times more attracted to the sugar than to the cocaine. So don’t be a rat.

DON'T BE A RAT.

Simple carbohydrates (white bread, rice, potatoes, crisps, chips) are also bad but for a different reason – they keep insulin high which prevents the body going into fat burning mode.

There’s a ton of info below. DO please dip into it and make yourself aware of what’s controlling you. Get free of it, drink enough water so you’re not dehydrated, and use my Till the Fat Lady Slims 2.0 (TTFLS) book to help break free from food prison.

Had a fabulous weekend away. At the end of the two days at Julie Cohen and Rowan Coleman’s writing retreat in Somerset, I’d -

- completed over a quarter of the revisions to Hawaiian Affair, for my publisher Choc Lit

- finalised a new title for my WIP - a series of novellas based on a scandalous ideal in 1920's, a kind of Mr Selfridge meets Call the midwife meets Downton Abbey.

- worked out the theme, the byline for the front cover and covered off the plot arcs for the first seven novellas in the series and the overall first series arc.

- made lots of new pals

- heard some fabulous tips

- walked in a wood with Badger viewing areas, a woodland classroom and a pig you could stroke (I was surprised how warm its skin was – don’t know why I thought it would be cooler!)

- ate some fabulous food and avoided too much bad stuff, and even did a bit of Bodyblade in my lovely studio room that overlooked the rolling distant hills. Read more about it on my News blog from Sunday, here.

It’s how I write, getting away from it all. Then I can totally focus and not let life get in the way. Which it does for most of us of course. But some of the promised we made at the end of the course were a schedule of what we would do by when. And at least I know after the punishing schedule I had this year, that I am capable of it, even if it means little sleep and stiff shoulders! Now I’ve just got to do it!

Meanwhile the Till the Fat Lady Slims weight loss book continues to sell well. I guess books in that genre always will. The thing is, what do you do when they… don’t? Joanna Penn wrote a feature about what to do if your book isn’t selling – more for first time self-publishers, but interesting none the less – find out more about the checklist she’s created after years of her own experiences. AudioBook of the Week – The Rivers of London

Ben Aaronovitch’s supernatural book came on the back of our Hallowe’en anthology, so I was just in the mood to read about river sprites and wizards and people being possessed – in a ‘cosy crime’ kind of way though – it’s a bit of both! But the star of the audiobook is the narrator – Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is definitely on my watch list now – his narration was funny, great accents, fabulous delivery and excellent timing. His Mr Punch voice is utterly spine chilling too! He lifted a good book to a great one – I’d listen to it again and there aren’t many I’d say that about! 9 out of ten from me. Here’s a taster:

“My name is Peter Grant and until January I was just a probationary constable in that mighty army for justice … the Metropolitan Police Service (known) as the Filth to everybody else). My only concerns in life were how to avoid a transfer to the Case Progression Unit – where you do paperwork so real coppers don't have to - and finding a way to climb into the panties of the outrageously perky WPC Leslie May. Then one night, in pursuance of a murder inquiry, I tried to take a witness statement from someone who was dead but disturbingly voluble, and that brought me to the attention of Inspector Nightingale, the last wizard in England…”

‘Course what you could do is offer an unbelievable deal! Well, a good one – IMHO, lol! All three of my romance novels, Hawaiian Escape, Hawaiian Affair and Hawaiian Retreat, in that order, will be going up on Amazon for one month only in one bumper paperback, in PG version for gifting. How to’s

Lots of people still asking advice about where to begin with self-publishing, naturally. There is a plethora of info out there. Notably some of the sites listed on my ‘beginner’s guide’ – see below. Just recently another person commented on the guest blog I did for The Creative Penn in April – asking about how to set up a readers group to help get reviews. This was my reply –

“Some beginner authors I know build up their social media platform, first, following and chatting to followers/readers of other authors who write in a genre similar to their own. Then you can ask if any of these new contacts could help with reviews. You may find, as I did, that you can form your own little beta readers group on Facebook.  (Relationship building is what social media is there for nowadays, of course, so a newcomer should in general be doing this anyway to build up their platform if they want to be taken seriously later by a publisher.) Good luck!”

HISTORY OF TILL THE FAT LADY SLIMS

You know one of those moments when you meet up again with someone you’ve not seen for over a decade, and you just pick up where you left off? I have a couple of old boyfriends in that category who are dear to me. And also several female friends who have been pivotal in my life.

 

One of them is Shawn Goodman and she met me last week (early August 2017) after a gap of 15 years or so. The last time I met up with her, I believe I was in LA with the kids on one of our adventure hols I used to take them on, and she met us for a meal in Santa Monica. I think. Well all these years later, Shawn was over in the UK with her other half who is in the medical profession, and asked me to meet up for afternoon tea. So we did!

 

It was amazing to catch up with her, and it reminded me of those early days when Freedom Eating was an alien concept. Basically it’s all about listening to your body instead of over ruling it with your brain.

 

Basics of Freedom Eating

 

If you can listen to your body it will tell you when to eat, WHEN being really important, plus how to eat and what food to choose. Usually it's based on what we now know is messages from your gut, associated with your microbiome. In the old days, like with The Seven Secrets, they said listen to your body, they just didn't know why. When I wrote my version, the original Til the Fat Lady Slims book in 2002 and it's updated version 2.0 in 2014, I refined the guidelines into six principles, and explained all about the 'When' diet - and how it could work alongside any traditional diet plan - any. Also how to do it, but not really why it's so successful where so many other pure diet plans fail. The facebook group kicked off, and the online support really made a difference to everyone in it, as we encouraged each other to remember things like 'the wayside is part of the journey, just don't set up camp there.' And much discussion about NSV's - non-scales victories - which help us avoid relying on the dreaded scales too much.

 

Then came a revolution in understanding the signalling from the body and the connection between that and the food we eat. So since the new technology allowed scientists to examine the gut in more detail, and its links to the whole of the rest of the body and the mind, I made the connection and put it in the book 3.0. - the companion to my original TTFLS book about Freedom Eating. It became a fascination to me also, to observe other people and their own diet habits - or non diet habits, as the case maybe. And from those observations, I created several 'guises' or types of Freedom Eater - gave them all a name, and described them in book 3.0. These six guises help you understand yourself and your own particular type of food prison, and how to get out of it using TTFLs principles. 

 

All of this was then incorporated into a newly updated version published by Choc Lit my publisher, in January 2017 - the end product is this one, and is available to order in good bookshops and of course online, eg on amazon here.

 

 

 It made me very proud this week to bring Shawn right up to speed and has reminded me how much this system helps people who could never manage their behaviour around food before. So hats off to you, Shawn Goodman and Vicky Hansen the original Freedom Eating founders, and thank you for giving me my life back!

I'm a Linda eater.  I weighed 11st 4lb or perhaps a little more when I thought enough was enough.   I had looked at holiday photo's and deleted alot of mine.  I'm 5ft tall and basically I was fat.

My daughter was getting re married it was a white wedding and I didn't want to be the 'fat mother of the bride'.  It was my incentive to loose weight.   

All through the year's I had yo yo dieted.  Lost it, gained it.  

My help came from Weight Watchers.  I found a local group with a fabulous leader.  I could never 'point' my food , I just couldn't get my head round it.  All that weighing and pointing. But she helped with Filling & Healthy.  No counting I got to goal weight.  I continued to eat that way, but my weight started to become unsteady, a bit up and down.   I struggled with support, not from my leader, but from WW.  Around this time I found Debbie's TTFLS group and her TTFLS book. Bought the book and got support and tips from the group and have never looked back.  Ditched the bathroom scales.  It had clicked into place. How to freedom eat.  It was my light bulb moment.

My weight has become more stable and I've been let out of food prison.  It's helped me not to become the food police on family and friends and enjoy some of those treats with them.   I still go to WW to weigh and to enjoy the company and new friends I have made.  WW has changed to Smart Points now. I can point now.  But I No Count in other words I Freedom Eat.  

I eat good healthy meals. Cooked from scratch.  My attitude to food has changed.  I eat on the hunger scale and not to the clock. Stopping when 'full'.  Eating the right food. Even my husband has lost weight as he's had to have new clothes too!

 

I've bought a Bodyblade and joined a fantastic Facebook group of people.   We Bodyblade together and we virtual wobble with one another and virtual walk with one another. Bodyblade and walking has toned me.  It's even made me a much happier person.  Less shy and retiring.

I've learned to accept compliments and not to brush them aside.  I've learned how to give them too!  I've even done some modelling for our town centre.

From the start to today I've gone from 11st 4lb to 8st 2lb.  Dropped from a size 16 to size 8 in clothes, and found out that I even lost weight on my feet - how strange is that!"

Not only has it changed my attitude to food, it has also helped me to lose weight - a stone since November by using your book in conjunction with a conventional slimming club - and the Bodyblade. So not only am I losing weight, I'm toning up as the same time. I'm on holiday at the mo and I have your book and the Bodyblade with me so I can dip into the book as well as the sea! Tracy McCann Hi Debs I've been dipping in and out of your book whilst keeping a food diary and doing exercise whilst controlling my calories and now the weight is starting to come off. Today I had a break through because of your book. I'm a comfort eater and always turn to chocolate/crisps/cakes and I can never resist when going round the supermarket - not today, my mind was clear and the old feelings that used to make me put all the junk in my trolley just weren't there. 19th January 2015 - tons of new ones:

Lorri Vick I definitely dont feel deprived following TTFLS - I do make sure I have all the right food at home and plan what I will eat etc - one day at work last week, I actually forgot to eat all day which is a first for me lol - used to have hunger, or what i thought was hunger, all the time . I reckon it was dehydration that gave me those evil hunger thoughts! I am making sure i am drinking way more water than I ever did without TTFLS and beginning to listen to my body - yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so happy you wrote this book Debbie PS stopping at satisfied has helped me as i always used to eat everything on my plate and then felt bloated for rest of day - my uniform always felt tight and uncomfortable in the afternoon but none of that at the moment - infact, its beginning to loosen - yay!! 

Amy Wall Not been on Freedom Eating that long before I noticed a difference in how I felt regarding my food intake. Like Lorri Vick I always thought I was hungry when in fact I was just being a little piggie. If it was there I ate it but NO MORE thanks to Debbie Flints amazing book and support. I plan my weeks food needs and am cooking from scratch rather than those ready meals which I had most days ( not being a lover of cooking) and finding out how much sugar is in them. In the past I had to have a sweet after meals but even that has stopped. Just been out for lunch(regular thing) with a friend and Mum. They had roast and sticky toffee pudding, me I had a bowl of soup as I have my lovely fish and veg tea to enjoy very soon and didn't think I COULDNT have it I just didn't NEED it. Must say though I have all the support from friends and family now I have explained how TTFLS works and they can see how I am benefitting from it. Wish I had found this years ago. Support from group is amazing. Thank you all. PS - I hate diets with a vengeance. I stick to them and then when I reach my target and start eating what I think is properly on the weight goes again but twice as much. It was my brain that needed educating as far as food was concerned not my stomach and that is what you and TTFLS has done for me so can't thank you enough xx

Lorraine Simpson It doesn't feel like a diet - I don't do diets, the thought of one makes me hungry and crave foods usually high in sugar. When I started reading TTFLS it made so much sense - there are no banned foods, no calorie counting or starving yourself or clearing your plate (now that's a novelty in itself) we were brought up to eat everything put in front of us. It's total common sense. Eat when you're hungry not when the clock says it's time, and stop when you're satisfied even if there's food left on your plate. Also, if your body really wants something then allow it to have it, yep even a dessert. Everything in moderation and cut out the sugar. Since reading the book in October on my kindle, it's made me think more about the foods I used to really crave: chocolate, cake and buns and pies - any type, meat or fruit. I had 2 chocolates at Christmas, the christmas cake is still uneaten and I don't have a muffin when we go out for coffee. This is not because the foods are forbidden, it's because I can now recognise if it's my sugar gremlin or my body that's wanting these things as I have a drink and then decide. Combine this book with a little more exercise - even just an extra walk - and you really can't fail to see results. Slow and sure - forever.

Jean Tallon for me the thought of going on a "diet" makes me feel depressed so I like to think that I have genuine choices about what I eat and when, not relying on some outside rules or time frame to accomplish my goal of being fit and healthy. I focus on a plan that fits into my life , not me trying to fit into the plan (and getting frustrated and trapped by rules ) I can live with TTFLS for the rest of my life as it allows for error, and it makes sense to me that im in charge of my own body and its needs.  I have a FAT head from all my calorie, carbs , exercise and points knowledge ,and a black belt in dieting ---- so , no more diets for me personally as ive failed miserably in spite of all my efforts and regimes xxx

Mary-Rose Harris Just can't do diets, too regimented and don't take into account what I feel like eating, like you Debs, as soon as I know I can't have something, I'm desperate to have some. I now realise that I've been eating too much when I'm not even hungry, just out of habit like watching telly and eating chocolate because it's part of my chillaxing ritual. TTFLS makes sense, I get it, I've never been able to diet and I won't be combining TTFLS with any diet.

 

 

Anne Keatingabout the same time as buying Debbie Flint's book, I started at Slimming World. I've been combining this with the Bodyblade and with swimming and walking and I've lost another eleven and a half pounds giving me a much fitter, healthier and lighter health style with everyone's support. So, as I said, having read some of the articles on sugar suggested by Debbie, I've been cutting down this week especially fruit sugar - just two pieces of fruit instead of snacking on it all day. Not a hardship as I'm not cutting it out completely. And this morning my blood sugar level was 5.8. I've never had a reading like this before. Maybe, just maybe, if I can continue like this, it might be possible to reverse the medication I was put on in September. Fingers crossed! xx

Lynne Sneddon - 13th January - Hi Everyone, I rejoined slimming world last week and decided to put the principles of TTFLS into practice alongside it as well as using my bodyblade, I went to class this morning and I have lost 3.5lb in a week - fabulous. Have a great day as I know I am. x

Not finished Debbie Flint s book yet but its sinking in. just had dinner didn't want all of it. Hubby says ‘don't you want that sausage?’ I said ‘no I'm satisfied.’ So he ate it.

Pudding, very naughty – I’d made choc cake (practising for my macmillian coffee morning) left some, hubby said ‘you have left some,’ so i said ‘dont need to finish it.’ guess what? Yes! He finished it. He looked at me with a funny look on his face. I told him to read the book it’s good. I feel so proud of myself. He said ‘very commendable.’ wow im happy.

Well done Adele , it’s so liberating to NOT be on a diet , all I can say is one day at a time, listen to your body. Knowing when you need water rather than food is an amazing breakthrough, it took me a few weeks. Throwing out my scales was also a fantastic feeling ... the hardest bit I think is being honest with yourself.

I have been a yo-yo dieter for years - been to clubs, had diet pills the lot, but TTFLS has finally worked for me ... if you ever need a buddy please just give me a shout ... Good Luck xxx

All my adult life I was caught up in a cycle of dieting and overeating. Each year was divided up into the months when I was dieting (and feeling positive & confident) and the months when I was overeating (and feeling guilty & depressed). At the end of last year I was into the overeating phase, my clothes were getting too tight and I was really unhappy. Something had to change, time for yet another diet. Then I discovered the 'Back to You QVC’ group on Facebook and sister ‘Break the Habit' group and through that heard about Debbie Flint's book 'Till the Fat Lady Slims'. I downloaded a copy and reading it has truly changed my life! 
Freedom eating helped me to gain control of my appetite for the first time, no more dieting just healthy eating. I learnt how to recognise the signals my body sends me, to recognise the difference between true hunger and thirst. Now I only eat when I'm hungry and stop eating when I begin to feel satisfied. I no longer eat for emotional reasons or to change my mood. 
Seven months later I've never felt better or healthier. Those clothes still don't fit me though....they're too big!
'Till the Fat Lady Slims' changed my life. Thank you Debbie!

 Bev9th September update -

Hello everyone! I haven't done an update for ages so here goes: it’s just my way of life now! I'm now in my 9th month of Freedom Eating and still avoiding all added sugar & processed foods. I've added nuts and seeds to my diet and take a high dose vitamin B complex along with my Omega 3 capsules. I can't believe how easy it's been and really wish I'd read TTFLS years ago!
Most people notice I've lost weight and are very complimentary. Mind you a 'friend' did have this to say "have you lost weight, you're too thin", I was fuming but then thought it was sour grapes! 
I'm very happy with my body now and the added bonus of less aches and pains (thanks to the tip on Omega 3). 
Thank you Debbie from the bottom of my heart, you are such an inspiration.  Xx

Ps My pre-freedom eating clothes no longer fit. I used to be size 12 bottoms and 14 tops, now I'm size 8/10. Obviously I'm thrilled with my new shape but more importantly I feel more confident and balanced. Because I now control my food, not vice versa, and my eating is guilt free. Freedom eating is a way of life for me now, no more dieting or calorie counting. Just wholesome food and only when I'm truly hungry. I've lost at least 2 stone and gone down two dress sizes, effortlessly!

Half way through the fat lady and having watched one of Robert Lustig's youtube videos I decided I would try to put some of it into practice last night. 
My 32nd wedding anniversary meal. An occasion where I would normally take the opportunity to eat and drink to my heart’s content (or rather until I was stuffed, unable to move and probably inebriated). I managed (reasonably well, I think!!) to listen to my body. I declined a starter and ate my main course slowly, taking my time, allowing my stomach and brain to communicate. I then declined a pudding and even said no to a liquor coffee. I did have more champagne that I needed and as the bottle was open I had to finish it. LOL.
Obviously I've still got a long long way to go but a goodish start nevertheless. 
Will finish Debbie Flint's fantastic book today and do more research of Dr Lustig's work. 
As a lifelong yo-yo dieter I'm determined (again) not to let my recent three stone weight loss go back on.
Will watch my intake today to compensate for champagne over indulgence!!

Emily Curtis - I find ttfls helped me understand that i was eating because i was bored and just reached for easy to eat rubbish. Now I've gone back to basics eating fresh fruit and vegetables lean protein nuts seeds beans sprouts and dairy and non dairy unprocessed natural foods that i would never had even tried like alpro coconut milk in my coffee or porridge in sprouting my own seeds … I eat when I’m hungry and always drink water first to make sure it’s hunger and not thirst. My weight is now stable at around 68 kg and my GP, dietician, etc are all very pleased … the ‘Back to You QVC’ Facebook group and other related groups really help too … support for each other even though most of us have never met.

TTFLS really made me stop and think about not just my diet but my reason for doing things, my attitude towards new tasks. Am trying to increase exercise whilst disabled and putting my body first. It also made me think about my emotional behavior and I've taught myself about cognitive psychology … all these things together have helped me get from my highest weight of 144kg down to the 68kg that i am now

 I recommend everyone to read your book and to try something new each day no matter how small the idea or task, they all add up and could make a big difference to your life. Thanks for writing the book and I look forward to the new updated version which i shall buy thanks Debbie xx

13th September Update

Right here goes Debbie has asked me to tell you all about my story of freedom eating and ditching the sugar I read many books including Debbie's ttfls and was having cognitive psychology sessions with a dietician at the hospital after long time illness what I learnt was this freedom eating has helped me to reclaim my control over food. No more counting calories eating for comfort or because I'm bored or sad. I find to freedom eat is to quit dieting and know what to eat without any external controls such as society saying diets are necessary this food is good this one is bad.

I have gone back to having the ability to let go of emotional eating restricting foods, bingeing and obssessing etc... I now rely on my brain’s ability to eat when hungry and stop when I've had enough, working with my hunger and not just eating because someone says it's lunchtime. With regard to exercise I do what my body allows me to - most of it is seated but since buying my vionics orthotic footwear, I have been walking more often as they have helped with the pains and alignment in my left foot and leg.

 

With freedom eating comes sugar detox. For help with this I looked up an American doctor called Dr Mark Hyman. His opening statement is - sugar is 8 times more addictive than cocaine. This blew my mind. Working in pharmacy I've met many addicts and would never had included myself as one – but I am – a sugar and bad carb addict. Following Dr hyman's rules it takes approximately 10days to go cold turkey. My key benefits learnt from his book are eating in a way that reconnects my internal signals of hunger and satiety feeling more comfortable in my body, beginning to eat more healthily… finding my natural and healthy weight for me and – vital – overcoming exercise resistance and finally decoding eating behaviours and body image.

With regards to sugars and sweeteners you have to keep in mind that when you eat or drink them they give you a temporary boost then you feel crap for the next 6 hours, so stop eating it – go cold turkey – you will bloat get bad brain fog, reflux, memory and mood problems, but by day 10 or beforehand if you are lucky, these will all disappear. You will feel like you want to start eating good proteins and good fats such as coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil omegas 3 6 & 9. If I need to sweeten something I use agave syrup – it’s from a cactus like plant and 20 times sweeter than sugar, so a little goes a long way. Look out for hidden sugars in ketchups and tinned foods. Eat good carbs especially green vegetables courgettes spinach greens peppers squash and beets.

Also make sure you sleep well try to get 8 hours a night - whilst you sleep, your appetite suppression hormones will build up for the day ahead. If you don't get enough sleep, your cravings for sugar will increase.

I hope this helps at least one person, it’s a very good book to go along side Debbie’s. So when trying freedom eating and sugar detox, get The Blood Sugar Solution 10 day detox diet by Dr Mark Hyman. Thank you for reading this post.

It's funny because the book has helped me see that I can have freedom with other things too... how I feel about myself, how I dress... and how I deal with my children!! - Freedom - not to conform to how others think I should be - I just needed to be 'me'... and I'm starting to like myself again - it's been a very long time since I have been able to say that!... I even took the kids swimming on Wednesday after their lesson ended... Morning all!  I just wanted to share with you. I bought the TTFLS book yesterday lunchtime. I have read the first chapter so far. I have well and truly started on my journey. 
For dinner last night I had prawn cocktail for starters then steak, new potatoes and veg for main course. I ate the prawn cocktail and had the feeling I was satisfied! Thinking oh no I still have the main course.
I went into the kitchen and when my husband was dishing up I said that’s enough potatoes. So I halved what I would have got. Normally I would say the only bad thing for me was the sauce on the prawn cocktail and the sauce on the steak. Instead I thought I thoroughly enjoyed that and felt really satisfied. A feeling I never get.
I felt wonderful so much so I had no cravings at all that evening. This morning I would normally have cereal and a cuppa for breakfast. This morning was different I didn’t feel I needed to eat so just had a cuppa. I can fall asleep after eating my breakfast sometimes, but instead I have been up and about, done lots more than normal. I feel great and my body still feels satisfied. 
I am looking forward to reading more of the book today. I picked flowers from the garden this morning. They are beautiful which is just how I feel

Almost a week since I bought the TTFLS book. Changes for me are: I am eating when hungry and not because it's time. I look at myself including my body in the mirror (which I didn't do before)! This week has gone so quick. My husband has noticed I have been more active and brighter in myself. All in all I am a lot happier x

My thoughts about Till The Fat Lady Slims

I am a middle-aged woman, married with one teenager. I also happen to be disabled with an illness that has impacted my mobility for many years, finally diagnosed in 2008. Being less and less able to move in the whirlwind fashion I previously enjoyed, now often confined to bed or wheelchair, my weight increased and my exercise lessened because it was too painful and exhausting. Inevitably I gained more and more weight.

In combination with a few other motivational tools, (and near starvation, feeling hungry all the time) I did manage to reduce my weight by three and a half stones within a year. Enough evidence was presented to satisfy my inner geek, while the really doable advice given could be tried out and followed if it suited me.

The best ideas for me to follow are to recognise when I am hungry and when I am not. You would think that was simple, but it takes building habits and recognising signals from your body to ascertain this. TTFLS explains why and how to learn strategies to overcome this disconnection, or misunderstanding the language of your body.

My top tips were learning to recognise what I wanted and when I really wanted it, whatever time of day, or situation I was in. I learned to question myself. What was I feeling? What did my body need? Was I sufficiently hydrated? So, was I thirsty or really hungry?

Also, when I am eating, no matter what, or how hungry I am, as soon as I notice myself taking a breath and sighing, I know it is a signal to stop eating now. Why do we sigh? Usually and unconsciously it is because our body is satisfied.

There are many more tips in Debbie’s book, but those above are especially the ones that have positively impacted my eating habits. I cannot diet. It feels like deprivation. But healthier choices are always possible. I am still obese, but gradually making better choices to reduce my weight and improve my peace of mind, whilst feeling nourished.

My family and my Mum went to the Harvester last night to celebrate our 12th wedding anniversary (today) and my Mum's birthday on Monday and I have to say I am rather impressed with myself. I visited the salad bar and didn't have any dressing or anything like croutons or crispy onions on my salad bowl. For my main course I chose the gammon steak with peas and jacket potato with no butter. For sweet, I had fruit salad with vanilla ice cream The ice cream was served in a tiny cup similar to an expresso cup. Drink wise I went for diet cola as I didn't fancy any alcohol. We had a fab time and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. I could have chosen a huge rhubarb & custard sundae or a honeycomb one like my mom but I didn't feel hungry enough to know that I would have enjoyed it but I wanted something sweet to finish my meal off. The fruit and ice cream did the trick without feeling full to bursting. ‪#‎TTFLSisKickingIn - hopefully 

I will get slim in time to renew our wedding vows in the Canary Islands in 2 years time

I have been overweight ever since I can remember. An emotional comfort eater! My weight was negatively impacting my emotional, social and physical well being. 
I felt overwhelmed with how much weight I had to lose but with the use of Debbie's book 'Till the Fat Lady Slims' I was able to build up the courage to start my weight loss journey. Slowly but surely I have now lost 3 stone in 7 months, still got a way to go but I've made it this far which at the beginning I thought would be impossible! 
I'm now aware of my body's signals of hunger and being satisfied! 
When I have cravings for certain foods I now ask myself whether I'm actually hungry. Do I really want this particular food? Am I thirsty? I enjoy my food even more so now as I eat slower and take the time to actually taste it! 
This book has helped me to create a positive relationship with food. I do over indulge a bit too much sometimes but I'm learning not to 'punish' myself! And not turn a 'bad' meal into an entire week of bingeing! 
With freedom eating I don't feel restricted from any foods. I'm now making healthier choices and living a healthier lifestyle. No more silly diets!

 Update –

24th September

I started my weightloss journey in January this year. I started using the freedom eating principles combined with exercise after reading Debbie's book TTFLS. The main thing that I am pleased about is how it's enabled me to have a healthy, positive relationship with food. If I overindulge I just start again the next day. I'm not 'punishing' myself like I used to or experiencing the awful guilt that I used to put myself through. I was shocked to find out that I had lost a pound whilst on holiday in Thailand for two weeks and I really did treat myself to lovely food! 
I have now lost four stone and recently treated myself to a size 14 dress :) previously I was wearing size 18-20! I've still got more weight to lose but I will continue to use the freedom eating principles even when I reach my goal weight!

 

 

24th September –

The main thing I learned was that I don't need to think of myself as being on a diet! I am making better choices (most days LOL!) and although my weightloss is slow (by choice) I'm happy to go slowly. If I want to have something naughty, I have it but in a smaller portion and then I leave out something later in the day. If we eat out then hubby and I share a starter and/or a dessert (if we feel we want to have them) and if I want a starter or dessert to myself (I don't have both!) then I will cut out something from the main, like carbs. It’s a process of substitution and portion control. And listening to your body.

When I first started reading Debbie Flint's book I didn't think it would have an impact on me but it did, I may not always stick to it but it did leave an impression that makes me think about what I'm eating and that's so important to me. Thank you Debbie, I'm re-reading it and look forward to the updated version. Xxxxx

When my sis gave me her book in 2002 I read it and felt liberated! Always a member of weight watchers I would count and weigh and often over ride my body in judging the obvious! ........ So although I still weigh once a week! (Just can't let go!!!) I now listen to myself! What does my body WANT to eat? Stopping when I'm satisfied ...... Being more active..... Smaller plates and portions!......I’m 50 now and I'm not trapped in diet prison any more! I take the best of freedom eating skills and combine it with healthy choices! Life is sunny and I'm so happy! Here's to our happiness for us all ladies x

It’s amazing what a difference a week makes. A week ago I was fresh back from my yoga writing retreat in Devon and giving myself a sugar hangover with the blimmin’ ‘treat’ choccie egg (little one, honest!) we were all given by The Management for Easter. Gawd. When will I learn! One sugar hangover later (seriously – I’m such a lightweight now I hardly ‘do’ sugar any more!) and I’m back on my serious health kick in the run down to end of June deadline for our ‘Break the Habit’ challenges – see bottom of blog for info about that date.

SO – this week, here are a few more fabulous mentions about giving up the evil stuff. First, the Mail on Sunday magazine had another serialisation of the ‘I Quit Sugar’ excellent book – our facebook groups are often posting links to some of their pearls of wisdom. Then I saw this – now it’s not often I get to post a link to VOGUE magazine! But this excellent article includes gems like this, from a lady who’s lost two stone and is now much, much healthier and has fewer health problems. And importantly – fewer wrinkles. This may be why -

As for its effect on our faces: "There are several reasons too much sugar is harmful for your skin," says aesthetic doctor Mica Engel of London's Waterhouse Young Clinic. “In cases of glycation, excess glucose binds to the skin's youth proteins and turns them brittle and stiff. The surfaces of cells are effectively caramelised; the by-products of glycation accumulate in the body and skin constantly appears dull and aged."

Cell inflammation not only ages the skin; it depletes the stores of vitamins and minerals in your body, compromising your immune system. "It's not only the skin that suffers," continues Dr Engel. "There are other, more serious, issues presented by people with too much sugar in their bodies - circulatory problems, inflammation of the cartilages and joints [arthritis], eye problems [cataracts] and liver and kidney problems, to name a few…’

And if it helps just one of you embark upon a sugar divorce, then that’s great news. For me, mine began two years ago when I first saw Dr Robert Lustig’s excellent video, Sugar the Bitter Truth, and the Sixty Minutes programme ‘Is Sugar Toxic’ – if you know any seriously ill people, do watch that and pass it on – it could be the turning point they need.

 

Toxic relationships? – And it’s not just sugar that’s poison. I got shot of a very toxic relationship in my life this week – I won’t go into details as it is totally in the past now, but basically a cyber bully was getting in the way of some friends and me achieving our writing aims. And we had to part ways. So part ways we did. Spectacularly as it happens, she bowed out just as she conducted herself within the group, but then it was over.

What I found afterwards was that a huge cloud had lifted, one I didn’t even realise was hovering there, it had become so insidious over the months it had been happening since last summer. I’m a very patient person – as one of the other ladies told me, who promptly rejoined our gang once the Toxic One had departed. Turns out, toxic people just don’t deserve to be in your life.

But it’s funny, whilst I can make myself move on VERY quickly from things like that, others can’t and it fills your head and distracts you if you let it. Well, all I can say is that if you have anyone like that in your life, remember this –

- You only get treated how you ALLOW yourself to be treated

- You may let them go and move on WITHOUT needing them to agree that you are right

- If they are not going to change (and most won’t) the only thing that can change is how you deal with it

- And if you can be independent of the bad (or good) opinion of others, you’ll be a happier person and live a happier life.

Now, that’s easier when it’s not family. But if you can, try spending as little time as possible with that person. To find out how affected you are by toxic relationships, do a little exercise and jot down some of the things that currently try you. Things that bug you. That are ‘other people’s fault’. Can just dropping them from your life solve the issue? If you give up your need to be right?

Then write a list of whom you spend time with, and next to each of them, put a plus or a minus – do they leave you energised or do they leave you drained? What are there most of on your list, plusses or minuses? If it’s mostly minuses, you may have a reason why you spend your days feeling frustrated. Then maybe it’s time to get rid of a few of the minuses. Work out if there’s a way you can extricate that person/event/situation from your life. You don’t have to explain why – just be a little less available than you have been, and concentrate on YOU.

We all need balance – and we all deserve to be happy.

And the ONLY person who is with you your whole life through - is you. So take care of you, first and foremost (not withstanding infants or young kids of course, but even then, what you give out you get back, and that’s a whole ‘nother topic! Meanwhile, all I’d say is read ‘How to Talk so kids will Listen and Listen so Kids will Talk’ – it changed my whole way of dealing with young teenagers many years ago. And if you’re facing under 7’s, read Biology of Belief by Dr Robert Lipton, who explains some of the most fascinating info ever about how young children develop. It should be taught at all ante-natal classes in my opinion!)

Anyway, that’s the thought for the day from me! I don’t always get it right myself, but I’m a damn sight closer nowadays than ever before, so I’m pretty happy about me right now. Who I am and what I do. Losing weight is just one of the things on my list, and Till the Fat Lady Slims principles of Freedom Eating are helping me get back to basics on that, in the run up to the end of June. I joined the group in Feb I had already lost some weight through various diet clubs but started to struggle so gave up the clubs and doing it myself by following Debbie Flint’s book TTFLS - it takes a bit of getting used to but I am getting there. I also wanted to increase my exercise and water intake which I am now doing.

I love the fact that we are getting more and more ladies joining all the time, how fab is that - I mean it just goes to show, long after the distant memory of New Years resolutions we can still keep going breaking habits or making new ones… I joined a little later, my challenges were to improve my work/life balance, increase my fitness/get back to running after a long term injury and boost my confidence after ending a long term relationship... all of which are on track and I even joined Rock Choir at the end of January thanks to this group. Big warm welcome to all newcomers. At the moment I am in Oz so our morning is your night which makes it a bit difficult for me to keep up with everyone. I am here with my lovely daughter & her equally lovely partner & my gorgeous granddaughter. Will be home on May 24th. Have more good news on the weight front today and I am now 77.5 so doing really well! I have lipoedema too which makes losing weight very hard but with the love & support of all these wonderful people &, of course, our brilliant Debbie Flint, I am doing great. Since I arrived in Oz I have gone from 83 kg to 77.5

THE MONDAY ESSAY - Alkalising your Body.

 

 

Many moons ago I went to a Tony Robbins seminar, after following his CD pack bought on QVC. There he talked at length about alkalising your body, and recommended reading Dr Robert Young (google him) who knew all about its effects on the body. In years to come I loved finding out more, including the explanations that –

 

- Cancer has to have an acidic environment, if it’s alkaline it cannot survive.

 

- Green foodstuffs generally alkalise your body, as can slightly acidic drinks like lemon juice - ironically – all to do with the stomach reacting to it with an alkaline reaction

 

- Yet alkaline water just gets swallowed up in the pH 2 acidity of the stomach contents. (there used to be some debate about this as some recommend alkaline water to alkalise, but I say lemon juice every time.)

 

- If your body is alkaline it can spend its energy on repairing itself rather than on fixing the pH

 

- And amazingly, that you can turn your body acid in a heartbeat, by getting annoyed etc.

 

All fascinating stuff, and worth more investigation, especially if you’re ill. I do believe that’s one of the reasons why diets heavy in plant stuffs work so well. As the old adage goes – ‘eat little, and often, mainly plants’ – there’s a lot to be said for it. Hence my interest in macrobiotics **

Recap - The Key Points to Food Freedom

 

1- Only eat when you're physically hungry.
