15 January 2015

As promised.

Hi all! As promised, I said I'd let you know when the Till the Fat Lady Slims 2.0 - the 'When' Diet came available on QVC. Well it's up online! If you go here and look at 704285 you'll see it's currently on Waitlist. When it comes in the warehouse you'll have secured yours and it'll be on its way - ready for around 26th when it'll feature on the final Back to You show 9pm on QVC UK. It differs from the 2015 version with the purple cover, as this new QVC version has hardback, signature, and it's also got extra content - eg a chapter covering the personal story of when I was away from QVC.

If you find it hard to stick to a diet, this is for you, or someone you know, certainly if the nine 5* reviews already on there, are anything to go by! I have to warn you though, there are only a finite number, less than 3000 have been made, so don't leave it too long. Thanks to everyone who's got it, keep me informed about how it helps you too.

Beauty Bash

Looking forward to seeing some of you at next week's Beauty Bash too? And also if you fancy helping me out with choosing the cover for that story I was telling you about, let me know what you think of these covers - just email me This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. - or let me know on one of the posts on Facebook or Twitter. Choose - red, green or multi.

Email me your thoughts! You can just press reply - it will come to me, not a spambot!

Best wishes and have a great week!

Blog 141229 last b2u webchat – all about you! And Monday essay – breathe deeply.

As we bow out of 2014, its time to reflect. What a year it’s been on Back to You QVC facebook group – some extracts of the final webchat are below – we opened the floor to members/viewers/back to You’ers, and some of the thoughts were lovely to read.

Plus, now Xmas is over and New Year just around the corner, many are feeling the stresses and needing to relax – I focus on the importance of breathing deeply, or properly if you don’t already. It sounds obvious but a lot of people – me included – just don’t.

And another little ‘squeeeee’ in Other News – my recent measurement from Imedeen as well as a stark reminder of the dangers of sugar and why it’s so vital to cut it out if you’re serious about you’re health and weight loss.

See bottom of this blog for full Monday Essay, followed by snippets from the webchat – thanks to all who took part! (links are below to join the facebook groups I mention on here.)

Back to You show – begins Monday 5th January 9pm then Weekly all month!

With the new run of Back to You on QVC starting again on 5th January, will you be joining me? What will your resolutions be? Do tune in for inspiration for health and well being, and to make your home a nicer place to be. More info about exactly what’s in the first show will be posted here once I know for sure.

TTFLS Special Edition But the news is that almost certainly we will be bringing you a new and exclusive HARDBACK version of Till the Fat Lady Slims 2.0 – the ‘When’ Diet – with extra content and it’ll be signed! It’ll be on advanced orders, or that’s the plan – you can order your copy in advance and it’ll be dispatched just as soon as it hits the QVC warehouse system towards the end of January. Why then? Well it’ll be handy to help you battle the end of January guilt that inevitably hits most people as they fall off the wagon with New Years’ Resolutions. As far as a new eating regime is concerned, TTFLs and Freedom Eating is there to work alongside ANY diet plan or system you can imagine. Yes any. Plus – some exciting news about a radio interview too – see ‘other news’ below!

(join Till the Fat Lady Slims group and ‘like’ the page for regular ‘tip of the day’ updates to help you on your way.)

For most people TTFLS works. If you can’t wait until the hardback is available, get   Till the Fat Lady Slims 2.0 – the ‘When’ Diet, (click here – paperback or eBook on Amazon! Find out why Freedom Eating principles make such sense. NB the first chapter is available free on the ‘look inside’.

Bodyblade Update.

Bruce was on the webchat again this week on Facebook on both groups, and announced this –

“Thanks and praise to you all for being so supportive this year for Back to you and Bodyblade QVC! I will be back on Jan 12 with two or three shows that day and again on Jan 13 with two or three shows. I am very excited to be back and will appear with Bodyblade Classic. The new kit will have a new DVD with two workouts called the Super6/Power10 which are similar to the Bodyblade on the beach workout where we do a minute of Bodyblade followed by a minute of body movement!”

He won’t be on next week’s webchat as he’ll be on a plane but the week after, he’s back in the UK and on my second B2U show! Yay!

Other News –

-          Deb to appear on BBC Radio? If you listen to Jo Good 3-5pm weekdays on BBC Radio London, you may have caught one of our lovely facebookers, Sara Brown, who called in to Jo’s Boxing Day programme extolling the virtues of TTFLS! Well the producer has invited me in to the studio to talk live about Freedom Eating and how well it works at this time of year. Once it’s done I’ll post the podcast! So unless anything changes tune in New Years Eve around 4pm to Jo’s show on 94.9 or online. BBC radio – that’ll be another first for me! Listen here.

-          Imedeen Update  Now I don’t often make the ‘other news’ about a little magic moment I had, but this week I was well impressed when discussing my skin with analyst Emma from the renowned collagen supplement Imedeen. Now this is only my own experience and I eat well and everyone’s different. BUT a year after taking it every day, after my initial skin density measurement came up at 47, when she measured me again with her ultrasound machine this weekend, its over 55! That’s a whopping increase and means I’m with Joanna Lumley and Christie Turlington in finding them excellent. Yours may differ but now we’ve got a full 4 month try out period – yes you heard me right – I couldn’t resist telling you more about it on here. Click here to see it on QVC.

-          Wean yourself off sugar if you’re serious about your health.

More pertinent articles to read to help you realise why sugar is so harmful – specifically fructose, the unnaturally concentrated sugar from fruit, which should only be eaten as whole fruit so the fibre combats the problems caused by the fructose. Read on to see why it’s so damaging and how vital it is to stop thinking a calorie is a calorie. For instance, did you know that a third of all calories ingested from fructose (ordinary sugar is half fructose) are AUTOMATICALLY CONVERTED INTO FAT; no matter what else you eat, how much exercise you do, it’s true. Just watch ‘sugar the bitter truth’, the ‘Youtube sensation’ with Prof Robert Lustig to see why it happens, especially if you love biochemistry! Or the many other fascinating and impactful videos – ‘toxic sugar’ from ABC, ‘Is sugar toxic’ from sixty minutes etc. And read the fascinating scientific studies and articles below.

Don’t forget to read below for webchat comments from our lovely Back to You gang on Facebook.

NB Also below, the Monday Essay about the importance of breathing properly in putting paid to ‘end-of-year-it is’!

Next week – The first of 2015! And what happened on 5th on the very first show from the new run – remember, 9pm Mondays in January on QVC UK!

Have a great week!

Ps in case you missed me saying, this Wednesday, on New Year’s Eve I’m on the Charlie Bears show at 8pm, plus the 9pm then off to my pal Shyama’s to see in the new year. Julia is on with a new pilates offer at the stroke of midnight – so get ready to join us if you’re not a party animal, to see in 2015, with a keep fit Today’s Special Value. And once you’ve joined our groups, you can keep going on, not just start!

THE MONDAY ESSAY

The Importance of Breathing Deeply

‘End of year-itis’ is a disease we all suffer from, from time to time. And many women will right now be stuffing their faces with the last mince pies, chocs and xmas biscuits, telling themselves it’s all because they will ‘start again on January 1st.’ Magically, they think, everything will be transformed and they will easily lose the weight and stick to a plan. Er…. really? OK we all do it, to a lesser or greater extent. BUT what if we didn’t have to? If you’re stressed enough from all the rushing around at Xmas, why add yet more stress to your body by making it deal with toxins and overload it with stodgy carbs, creating an insulin nightmare which prevents the body from acting normally and starts off a whole new chain of reactions leading inevitably to the diet being broken, another last supper and ‘starting again tomorrow’ over and over again. And another rubbish January with nothing to show for it except some extra pounds. If that’s you, please join us on Back to You QVC facebook group. The support is excellent, and the info and links given have helped transform some people’s lives (read on below.)

Naturally I’m going to tell you that Till the Fat Lady Slims’ Freedom Eating method will assist you in stepping off that wagon and changing the habits of a lifetime. It will. Plus you can use it alongside any of your existing intended diet plans – books, DVD’s, classes, whatever – yes really, you can. That’s the ‘When’ diet part of the second version of my book. Till the Fat Lady Slims 2.0 – the ‘When’ Diet, is the current version (purple cover) available on Amazon in paperback or eBook. * find it here.

And then I’m going to say – take a moment and breathe deeply. I mean really deeply.

The method I use, I first learned in Tony Robbin’s Personal Power 30 day audio tape pack, in the late 90’s. it involves taking in a deep breath, as deep as you can, holding it for longer, then breathing out in a controlled way. Typically I count as follows –

1. Inhale through your nose, expanding your belly, then fill your chest. Counting to 6

2. Hold and Count to 6.

3. Exhale fully from slightly parted mouth making a ‘hhhhhhh’ hissing noise, counting to 6.

That’s my way – particularly when I’m on my own – otherwise the hissing will have a weird effect on bystanders and even scares Daisy the Labrador. There are of course other rhythms, involving longer or shorter elements. But if I do it on the way to work, for instance, at the end of a journey where I’ve been doing that, I find myself less tense and more able to then breathe more naturally afterwards.

I’ve started doing it again recently in a more deliberate way after realising one too many wrong food choices over Xmas (not much, and not often, but enough to notice a difference - remember dairy in particular has a big impact on me now that I usually almost never have it.) So I’ve been finding myself not able to breathe very deeply without it being an effort. This type of exercise, which I do for 15 mins to half an hour or so,  I believe strengthens the inter-rib muscles and makes my rib cage more able longer term, to suck in the air my body needs so desperately. I know also that I can create a headache scenario within my own body by not breathing correctly, plus I can become really tired without proper oxygen being exchanged in my lungs. There are tons more benefits of getting my breathing right – and just one of the many articles online is linked to below so you can find out more, but there are many, many others to read about. From the heart to digestion to the immune system, so many things have been linked to having benefits from better breathing. Even the ancient Romans apparently had doctors who recommended deep breathing. And it’s free, and it’s instant and it’s so easy to do.

Once you get the hang of the benefits, schedule your deep breathing exercise just as you would schedule important appointments eg a minimum of two 10 minute segments of time everyday although you can begin with two five minutes segments if you prefer. - See more here.

Please read the long list of benefits that breathing deeply brings – just google that phrase and you’ll see endless articles like that one.

And what’s more important, you may feel you need comfort, which translates to comfort eating, when really a good deep breathing session might be what your body really needs. Why not give it a go? And see the new year in, with some alternative New Year’s Resolutions. And maybe say goodbye to End-Of-Year-It is.

Have a good one!

Over to You – Back to You Facebook Webchat 29th December 2014

How has Back to You helped you in the past year?

From our Facebook group webchat, 8-9pm.

Anne Keating – (going to feature on the interview segments in the new series)

“I've just got over a couple of days of feeling really poorly which put me right out. HOWEVER I've just got back from weigh in and I'd only put a pound on over Xmas. Much, much better than usual! My big moment this year was when I read Debbie Flints book Til The Fat Lady Slims and decided to combine the principles in the book with going to Slimming World. That, and getting started on the Bodyblade Supersix, has turned my life around… I used a sleep app and found my sleep efficiency increased by 10% if I used the Bodyblade 20 minutes or so before going to bed! That's a bonus Bruce! … And it means that I am starting 2015 positively, having lost 9lbs in under two months and having a completely different outlook on food and eating. This group, the QVC Queens and Bodyblade pages have been fantastic, but I can't thank Debbie enough for all her support. She's my hero! Bring on 2015.”

Janie Smith – also featuring on video interviews

“Thanks to freedom eating and macro tummies I've not gained any weight over christmas. Yay.
I love this group keeps me on the straight and narrow. I use my aero Pilates machine on my active rest days and am trying very hard to buy a body blade! Debs is blooming inspiring and I have some lovely new friends. Thankyou xxxxccc”

Amy Wall – one of our lovely regulars

“I'm new to all this FB Twitter etc and as I retired 18 months ago and then diagnosed with BC I realised that I had to change my lifestyle once my treatment had finished so the big change for me was when I found out about Debbie's book TTFLS and started putting the principles from it in place. where I have found so much support from the other members and finally today I am awaiting receipt of a Bodyblade Yeahhhh Bruce Hymanson all ready to go as soon as it arrives. Thank you also Sharon for all your hard work and support for this group xxxx”

Valerie Cady – regular and fabulous success story

“Joined the group in November after googling and coming across Debbs books and links to health and exercise . I find the group supportive and interesting . We each share our experiences and encourage motivation . I love the body blade and the beach video exercises . It's early days for me, but I’m happy to have started my journey into wellness.
Thanks to Debbie and Bruce for their time and for making it fun xx”

Cathy Winsall – with a different angle

“Bodyblade is fab and TTFLS is invaluable and thankyou Bruce and Debs for these, but for me this year it has to be Alpha H that changed my life after so many years of the most horrendous spots and rosacea flare ups. Alpha H has turned my skin around and thankyou Tom Ogden, you have been my fave webchat guest. Happy New Year”

Heidi Moss – with a request!

“ Looking forward to the shows - the last ones Debbie Flint did on a Mon really motivated me and started the week in the right mood. Wish this could be a regular thing.”

And of course chats with the experts crop up outside of our Monday webchats too – eg Marlene Watson Tara, a health expert loved by many of the members. This week she filled us in on how to make macrobiotic shopping easier, to create some of the most health-giving recipes in the world! Her book is called ‘Macrobiotics for All Seasons.’ And is on amazon.

Marlene Watson-Tara Clearspring do free shipping on orders over £40 -www.clearspring.co.uk you can watch me making many of these dishes on my you tube channel . Wholegrains, beans, lentils, vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds make up 95% of a macrobiotic diet, if you don't have specific ingredients, simply start with easy grain dishes and soups, lots of recipes on my website also. Have fun and thank your lovely daughter Cheryl for guiding you towards eating a natural wholefoods diet. Miso, sea vegetables and dried shitake mushrooms, last for ages, you only use a little at a time so it is not something you have to buy as a weekly shop. Well done Sharon, super teacher you are.... Here is the link to my channel.https://www.youtube.com/user/Molly19571 - there are many great educational blogs on my website, enjoy. Xx”

LET’S START AS WE MEAN TO GO ON, TEAM. AND NOT JUST START, BUT KEEP GOING ON!

PS – Watch out soon for Christianne Wolff, (Marie-Francoise, our Kipling guest’s sister) who is making waves with her ‘Body Rescue Plan,’ appearing on our Back to You live webchat – around Thursday 15th, and on air on QVC about the same time at 9am.

What an idiot. Those automatic parking telephone lines in car parks are great nowadays, right? Save you loads of time? Hmmm.

So I took my own car in to be serviced, got the courtesy car and went shopping. Parked in the usual place, paid by phone in the usual way and when I got back, there was a parking ticket, bold as yellow brass, sitting on my windscreen. What had I done? Autoparked my own flipping car instead of the loan one! Grrrr!

Anyway, if you've got a lot on your mind this season, blame the time of year. Not old age, or scattiness... honest! Lol!

The blogs are complete this week, if you'd like to go have a read. Thing is with my QVC one, I don't get many comments left any more - I know I'm on Facebook and Twitter a lot, true. Therefore I'm more accessible, but it's still lovely when I see some pop up on my QVC blog so do feel free. This week's includes a funny video in Charlie's dressing room, with Alison Young - yes really! lol. And a teaser of Mally too. To see that and lots of music performances including Sam Bailey, Il divo etc clips, great xmas gift book bargains and some funnies from last week on air - click here to see the blog.

This Friday's is a biggie - my Friday QVC blog will have all the info about my new mahoosive Xmas competition prize of some Laura Geller, some Liz Earle, two of my books, a JW EDP Phytomineral perfume and ... a Bodyblade! Whoop! It'll be out Friday not right now, but when it's posted you'll find it here.

Had fun again on our fab supportive facebook group with the Back to You webchats, this week they were all about Nono and Judith Williams products, and some fascinating features about how the Mediterranean Diet is being proven once again to be one of the most healthy in the world. Check out the info relating to statins on a new study. Plus how most of us don't eat for hunger - emotions and habits get in the way. It's very interesting - check it out here.

Oh, and if you'd like a new Christmassy theme book, my lovely Devon writing pal has a new anthology - 'The Mistletoe Run' - based on a true story. Go here to see it on Amazon. Do you read only festive style books in December? Let me know - you can just 'reply' as it'll go to me (or my 'elves') not to a spambot! lol.

And thanks to those of you who have contacted me direct with huge outpourings of support and thanks this week for all the stuff I do, it makes it all worthwhile, believe me.

Now I've got a final little bit of insider knowledge to tell you - there will be one every week from now on - and it's a new SHORT story I've been working on. It's called 'Twelve Dates of X-mas.' Can you guess what it's about? If I get it done in time, it'll be a freebie over Xmas itself as my little pressie to everyone who has a Kindle or Kindle app. I'm just working on some loose ends then it's all steam ahead. Do tell a friend to subscribe to my newsletter to get the latest updates about when it's ready! Just go here and click on the pop up if they - or you - haven't already

So anyway - this weekend, I'll be doing the tree and the decs - when do you do yours?

Best wishes and big hugs.

Published in Debbie's News

It’s beginning to look a lot like ‘Gift-mas’ – three more shopping weekends and plenty of time to order yourself some pressies online right? How about get a couple of people sorted out this week with an exciting romance series in paperback? A big one!!? Order as many copies as you feel like, of Hawaiian Trilogy – my three novels all under one cover for the first time – and Hawaiian Retreat also making its debut in paperback and in PG.

For those who don’t know, after I published my first novel I had quite a demand last summer for a less erotic version of my books, which some described as ‘fifty shades of HOT but with a story and a plot!’ So the ‘PG’ (parental guidance) versions were uploaded, perfect for presents. And now at last there’s not only the final part in the series in PG but it’s inside a three part super-volume, which comes in at just over 600 pages! It’ll make a substantial gift for someone special who you know likes funny romances with a substantial plot. Around £12 (I say ‘around’ since Amazon alter paperback pricing from day to day.)

Here are some of the reviews from Amazon –

Debbie flint has done it again! This book takes you on a emotional as well as geographical journey in every sense. Stretching your imagination whilst pulling at your heart strings and making you cry with laughter.”

Hawaiian Escape – the prequel to Hawaiian Affair – we meet Sadie and her kooky older sister Helen and their funny family, and follow the fortunes of both sisters as they travel to Tuscany for a nail biting finale in a competition that may change Sadie’s life forever. (Average score of 4.5* )

“... This book takes you on a emotional as well as geographical journey in every sense. Stretching your imagination whilst pulling at your heart strings and making you cry with laughter.”

Hawaiian Affair – awarded the ‘BRAG medallion’ for excellence in Self-publishing. (Over 110 x 5* reviews on Amazon for steamy version and average 4.8* over 18 reviews on PG) – Sadie’s story – what happens when feisty independent singleton Sadie meets a potential investor, Mac, who never mixes business with pleasure – until he meets curvy Sadie.

This is the 3rd book in the Hawaiian series. The plots and sub plots keep you guessing and I wanted to know what happened.
So what does happen to Helen and who will she choose? More to come from these characters I think.
A great holiday read.”

Hawaiian Retreat – Helen’s story – international columnist Helen searches the world for original ‘Try it For the First Time Club’ fodder, from Tuscany to Tibet to Thailand to Hawaii, all the while being tracked by a mystery man who could bring back ghosts of the past, or plunge her into an alternative future. (average 4.8* out of 19 on steamy. This is the first appearance of the PG version!)

Hawaiian Trilogy – is all three books in one PAPERBACK release.

Book of the Week - Broken Homes - the 4th PC Peter Grant mystery from Ben Aaronovitch. Yes he’s doing it again – fabulous ex-writer of Blake’s Seven, Ben and his superb narrator Kobna Holdbrook Smith, are wowing me with this latest title – read more about it here. And start with Rivers of London - if you like mysteries with a kick and a superntural bent! I'm giving this one another good 8 out of ten. go here for more.

Other News –

-          Waterstones’ Book of the Year - The Miniaturist what a fab debut this book was in the summer – made an impact and has won this impressive accolade, which is chosen by booksellers instead of readers. Set in 18th century Amsterdam, Jessie Burton’s debut novel is an atmospheric ‘literary thriller’ – for me, I’d read the ‘free look inside’ sample on Amazon before buying, but if you like things literary and a big more high brow then this may be for you. More here.

-          Using a Book tweeting service – Has anyone used one? What do you think? With a reach of 435,000 followers on Twitter, (obviously much less than that actually see it,) they offer a scale of options eg $51 dollars for three days of tweets, 180 retweets offered in that time. Go here for more, but bear in mind there are tons of others like this. It may however be a good way to get some attention in the US. They don’t take erotica or political titles.

This week - Doing a new super6 workout video in Marina Del Ray! What a lovely week I had in LA! Bruce met me with two bodyblades and off we went, recording a new video – with stretches in between. In other news, how fast is your brain? Take the quiz! Also the Monday Essay… When East meets West – an inspiring story of recovery.

Bodyblading on the beach

Well some people roller blade, and others skateboard, but Bruce and I were there on Marina Del Ray beach, Bodyblading! It’s called ‘Mother’s Beach,’ and we went for a drink nearby in Jamaica Inn Hotel afterwards (see main QVC blog from Friday 14th for pics.) But the main point of the meet up was to video a little Super6 workout – the 6 one minute exercises on his ingenious invention which really do strengthen and tone your whole body. This one has movement in between too! So here it is – have a quick look and use this link whenever you want to do it along with us, to give you a bit of variety from the other ones we’ve done!

It was really fun meeting Bruce and also going to dinner with him and his lovely wife Carrie. He had some interesting points to make regarding ongoing exercise, or permahabits as we like to call them. See bottom of this blog for a summary of his Q&A from this evening’s webchat on the ‘Bodyblade QVC’ Facebook group – and see if you can do the ‘lost 10lb in ten minutes’!

TTFLS update

In case you didn’t know, there’s a (almost) daily Tip of the Day for TTFLS* people, on the PAGE (click here to ‘like’ the page.) Here’s one –

“Tip of the Day #19-
Remember a blip is a blip. It's not a change forever. If a blip happens, think, 'hmm, I wonder why I did hat?' And let it go. Work out why it happened so it won't become a permanent thing, but let it go. If a slim person has a thick milkshake, they will eat less dinner afterwards. Non freedom-eaters will have a thick shake, then punish themselves for the rest of the night, forcing food down their throats, feel terrible, and all because of a thought in their brain. Nothing to do with their body or what it needs.
Listen to your body, trust it, give it a chance. And learn from a blip.”

Do go read if it helps any – and if you have some of your own tips, do feel free to add them – it’s a fabulous supportive community that’s for sure! And if you haven’t got my semi-autobiographical weight loss book, updated for 2014 yet, the link to the book *Till the Fat Lady Slims 2.0 – the ‘When’ Diet, is here – paperback or eBook!

Heard this week from Anne K who was rightfully proud of herself too – she posted this week on Facebook on B2U group –

“I've done many diets previously and given up after a few weeks or months. This time the doctor told me I had to lose half a stone by the beginning of December. I had decided to go to Slimming World when I saw Debbie's book mentioned on I'm a QVCUk Queen page. I've found it is the extra motivation I need to keep going - and even when I get to my target weight (which I have never done before) I know it has given me the basis for a new way of looking at food and of eating. It fits in with Slimming World which allows you to eat as much as you like of the healthy foods I need for Type 2 diabetes - and Debbie's book shows me how to know when to stop when I've had sufficient. A double whammie!”

I told Anne and the other ladies on that strand how proud I was of them all and it is indeed getting used to being different around food, not a temporary ‘on a diet’ only to come ‘off a diet’ – this is setting up - what? Permahabits!

Keep up the comments and updates on the groups, everyone! And keep me informed personally if you like by emailing me This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

THE MONDAY ESSAY

Karen’s Miracle Recovery – Twice Over

Really interesting story this week from a pal of my host in LA, painter Karen. She’s a breast cancer survivor with a very interesting outlook on life.

First to let you know, she’s very aware, like I am, of food as cause, food as cure, for many of the common ills humans endure. However, when she first got breast cancer, she refused to go for western medicine, refusing to give in to it, insisting she would deal with it ‘later.’ Her reason was a tragic one – she’d lost many relatives via cancer, and seen them die more as a result of the treatment, than through the disease itself. However, things came to a head in around 2004.

‘I’d felt the lump in my left breast get bigger, to the point that I could almost see it breaking the skin. Basically my doctor said I had to be operated on immediately, followed by chemo or radiation. I just didn’t want to undergo that treatment because of what I’d seen it do to my sisters and mum. The doctor did an MRI and it showed that the lump in my left breast developed to such an extent that it had it’s own substantial blood supply, and now I’d also got a small lump in my right breast. I was devastated, but still resilient. The doctor said I simply must go in for treatment on Monday – I said no, I’ve booked a trip to Europe for three weeks, and I’m going. So despite protests, off home I went. But that night, my best pal gave me a lecture on nutrition and told me about some incredible turnarounds in people who adopted strict macrobiotic principles (like Vegan with no wheat and no sugar, plus eastern extras like sea vegetables, miso soup, special soy sauces, special mushroom dishes and an emphasis on grains.) She gifted me everything I needed to eat macrobiotically on my trip – quite an impossible task in France had I not taken it all with me – rice cooker, brown rice, miso, seaweeds etc. No dairy, no meat, no wheat, no sugar. Well, three weeks later, after I returned from my holiday, back I went for my surgery. The doctor did an MRI again just prior to surgery so they could ascertain where to operate.

She called me into her office and sat me down. Unbelievably, the MRI scan showed something amazing. Not only had the lump in the right breast disappeared, but the big one on the left had halved, including having half the blood supply. So off I went ecstatic that destiny had given me the chance to prove I could face this thing and solve it my way - determined to continue my journey with food.’

Now Karen is a 64 year old active, single, mum of three, living in LA with a busy group of media friends and is down to earth and very, very normal. She told me how after that, she continued to research the amazing difference nutrition can make to health. And accepting the option to take part in non-chemo trials. This included being on a three month medical trial in New York in a retreat, where inmates are given a section of a fridge to keep their food in. She was annoyed that not only were doctors not telling any of the participants to avoid certain foods, they were largely not eating any fresh foodstuffs at all. There was plenty of room in the produce drawers and she went out and filled hers, and many other drawers that were empty since most participants were buying ready frozen meals and bad treats etc. She bought all kinds of veggies and a few fruits and then made herself juices every day – wheatgrass, spirulina, much green stuff etc. (She’d tried the macrobiotic diet, the Gerson diet and raw food diet too, and had much knowledge about nutrition, entirely self-taught.) Now whilst she was standing there making the juices each day, people would come in and talk to her, and she ended up explaining about foods and how they can cause or cure many conditions. Lots of people wanted to continue asking her advice after the trial and it led to her setting up her own business as a consultant on wellness.

But after a while she knew that, whilst a big part of it, nutrition was not the whole solution.

Whilst you can alkalize your body with foods, mainly vegetables, it’s also true that in a heartbeat, in the blink of an eye, you can also make your body acid with emotions – getting angry for instance – they don’t say ‘he’s filled with bile’ when someone’s livid, for no reason – (google it to find out more about how emotions can lead to dis-ease within the very fabric of your body.) And she knew she had some work to do. She became Buddhist and her beliefs helped lead her to the next stage of her amazing story.

By early 2014, she was starting to get angrier and angrier with the establishment – all these people not being told about how nutrition could help cut their symptoms and aid recovery. She was an active painter, she by now had three grown up children and was part of a great support network of friends and allies. She began to feel tired and ached a lot, and knew there was something wrong again. Her breast cancer had reared up again and spread. She was keeping healthy, she’s slim, and exercises daily, chants and eats really well. But within herself, she had what she now realises was a prejudice. Not the run of the mill kinds, but a prejudice against authority and the medical profession – in particular western medicine. Her doctor showed her the PET scan of her body – in early Summer 2014, the full body scan lit up like a Christmas tree. Every white light represents bone metastases – cancer – in the spine, the shoulders, the joints, all over - apart from the brain and the heart which are supposed to be white,

For many that means a death sentence and her doctor told her she had better rally her family around. Her pain was extreme and she was unbelievably tired. She couldn’t believe it. After all she’d been through.

So she talked to her friend who was a senior Buddhist and she observed that Kate was carrying a prejudice against Western medicine and that she can’t be carrying that and have full power. So Kate worked out that it was time to make her peace with it and by dropping that prejudice, she had far more choices available to her. East and West really can live side by side and different things work for different people.

Back at her doctor’s, she was told that she had a particularly aggressive type of cancer called ‘Her2 positive’ , which only affected 15% of cancer sufferers. But the good news was that it was able to be treated by something that was not chemotherapy – a new drug called Herceptin. But first her insurance company would usually expect her to go through surgery, then radiation and only then would she be able to be given the $17,000 dollar, extortionately expensive shots of Herceptin.

She said ‘I asked my doctor if I could just go straight to the Herceptin. She said she doubted that the insurance company would accept the paperwork. But ironically it was just before July 4th independence day holiday and if I got the paperwork in quickly, with it marked ‘urgent’ maybe, just maybe, they’d process it without too much extra info being needed. That Monday she called and told me they’d approved it, and to get straight in to have the first shot.

Herceptin isn’t a drug that makes you lose your hair, or become weak, dry mouthed, etc. It’s an antibody.

Nine weeks and three shots later, I went back in for another PET scan. The doctor called me in and looked incredulous. She then showed me the second scan of my body. The cancer had gone in the bones and the breast tumour was reduced by 75%.

I’m now on a maintenance programme and watch what I eat, but also am full of surviving spirit – pioneering spirit – and belief that the body is an amazing miracle worker, if you give it the right support and tools to make the changes it needs to make itself. If a person in a white coat tells me ‘x will happen to you,’ I don’t believe it – I think to myself  ‘I’ll prove you wrong, I’ll find a way.’ All these things, and my philosophy of Lotus Sutra Buddhism via Soka Gakkai International-USA, have all helped with my story.

When I go to the hospital, doctors bring other colleagues to see my scans, and discuss my unusual case. And now in the Far East, apparently they are about to conduct the ‘Respect’ trials, on the elderly who wouldn’t survive surgery and radiation, just giving them Herceptin alone. Interesting times.

For anyone wondering about diet and if they should make changes, I’d say go read and study all the info that’s out there - it’s easier now than ever to get access to info that maybe even your own specialist is not aware of. And be insistent. I once asked a doctor about the markers they use in order to decide if someone ‘has cancer’ or is ‘cancer free’ – there is a ‘normal’ range, which they consider cancer-free, and I asked whether that meant they actually still had a degree of normal cancer within their body. He was evasive and said they couldn’t say for sure. Yet if it had been over that ‘normal’ limit he would have been absolutely certain that person had to have harsh treatments and would have told them in no uncertain terms what the expectations were of their prognosis. That didn’t help me in having no confidence in the medical profession, but I am now very grateful to have been given such cast iron evidence of my amazing recovery – in these two scans, nine weeks apart.

I’m very lucky. And I hope others will be as lucky too.’

If anyone else has a similar situation, I’d suggest they research Gerson diets, macrobiotics, raw food diets, Buddhism and meditation, and the Power of Belief alongside whatever specialists’ advice is available for you to consider. More reading is here – Good luck.

-       Biology of Belief – Dr Bruce Lipton – 96 x 5* reviews - are genetic issues really unavoidable? This book cites the example of a schizophrenic who has blue eyes in one personality and they change to brown in another; of a patient who has anaphylactic shock from a dog allergy in one personality, but can sit playing happily with dogs in another personality. And much more besides. It’s belief that plays a powerful role in how your body reacts.

-       Your Life in Your Hands – Dr Jane Plant – 73 x 5* reviews - her own experience of a certain type of breast cancer that responded to a no-dairy diet, and tons of scientific evidence as to why.

-       ‘Dying to be Me’ – Anita Moorjani – 167 x 5* reviews - one woman’s ‘death and back’ experience, a stage 4 cancer sufferer who went into hospital when her organs began to shut down, who experienced an amazing remission following a near death experience - three weeks later, she was recovered so much, she went dancing at a party. These are not supposed to be medical advice, nor are they advocating a course of action, they are merely for information.

BACK TO YOU WEBCHATS

8-9pm Mondays, Back to You QVC Facebook group

The Transcripts

Rosa Speyer, Yankee Candles & Caroline Manley, Nails Inc

Rosa Speyer, Yankee Candles, Monday 17th November ‘14

Q1. Dawn Robinson -  I've got two questions 1st one is if you could only pick 3 Candles what fragrances would you pick ? 2nd you always look lovely what QVC beauty products do you use ?

A – thank you for your lovely comments - tough question!! I can ony have 3 candles in the world?? eek OKay True Rose - classic floral and reminds me of my wedding day , sandalwood vanilla as sumptuous but snuggly eve fragrance and snow in love for festive freshness….  Its so hard to just picjk one yankee fragrance - that's why \i love them so much becuase you can chop and change. I've got Angels Wings burning this evening but yesterday it was sage and citrus and another day it will be blissfull autumn or fresh cut roses!!

I am a beauty addict and my entire face is courtesy of QVC lol! My make up bag is largely filled by bareminerals, laura geller and mally. I am using SBC collagen on my body and face at present but also love the Prai gemstone serum, Liz earle eyebright and toners and elemis when i am really treating myself

Q.2 – Sonia Simpson -Will Yankee be doing more jar shape wax melts please?

A – no more jar melts moving forward. They were created as a sort of next step melt and Yankee have now moved on to even more exciting inventions in the melt world more info as soon as i have it. We may be able to bring a few more to QVC towards the end of this year but only a small amount were ever made and were officially only sold in the states

Q3 - Pam Merrifield Will there be an electric melt warmer with automatic off switch? I keep forgetting to turn mine off!!!!!

A – there are no plans to put fancy switches and tiers on the electric melt warmers but ed did go to homebase and got switch for a couple of pounds and put that on to my teapot warmer so i could switch it on and off more easily. I too sometimes forget about them so have it also plugged into a timer - you can get them for very little in most DIY stores xx

Q4 – Sue Stewart - Are we getting anymore non stick melts for the tea pot warmer. If not how do we get the wax out with normal melts

A –  sorry about my typing folks ! my mind moves faster than my fingers. Sue I think I have answered your melts question earlier - there were some available on auto delivery but i don't know yet if we have more avaialbe to put on air. The best way to get melts out if stuck is switch on/light your melt warmer for about a minute - just enough time for the ery bottom to melt then turn/blow out and melt will just swish out

Q5 – Julie Anderson - Just wanted to say I love you as a guest on QVC. I'm a Yankee addict, they also make me feel good. Thanks for your work:)) what is your all time favourite fragrance?

A – hi Julie thanks fr your kind comment - I love my work!! I mean I love doing it. All time fave is rose so iether fresh cut roses or true rose

Q6 - Chris Dig N Doug We know your favourites, but what are the lovely Ed's favourites. Bless him he only ever gets mentioned in passing

A – Hi Chris Dig N Doug Ed loves all the vanilla and foodie ones and his all time fave is lemon lavender - which is the only lavender i'm not that keen on!! lol he puts it in the melt warmer when I am not there. he is also a huge fan of christmas cookie, salted caramel and banana nut bread

Q7 – Tiger Kadi Hi Rosa welcome. I adore Yankee candles. Can we have more. Variety on the electric tart burner and also a collection of smaller jars. And plug ins and refills..Thank you.

A - hi Tiger Kadi [amazing name!! x] We are doing more and more electric melt warmers as they are becoming more popular so will keep you posted.we are working hard on gettign plug ins back in stock together with refill. we know you all want them. We often do snall jar gift sets around xmas so fingers crossed more on their way

Q 8 – Linda Bignell Hi Rosa, is there going to be a Yankee TSV before Xmas

A – yes!! very excited about the yankee tsv on 26th November I think our best xmas gift collection yet xxxx

Q 9 – Michael James Hamlyn As many of the lovely ladies and gents here know, I LOVE QVC, and often get starstruck on these chats... But none more so than with you Rosa! You are a hero in our household (My Robbie loves you too!)
Sorry to gush but you are just so knowledgeable, entertaining and hilarious! You are lucky I don't understand Twitter as I would totally be stalking you!
Also while I am here - Thank you thank you thank you for listening to all our feedback. You are probably the best brand for listening to us. The USA exclusives have been AMAZING!
I wish I had a question so I don't look quite so sad...

A - you are utterly charming and thank you so much for your lovely words xx I'm not great on twitter myself stephen is a far more proliffic tweeter than me! We do our best to feedback everything viewers request to the team at yankee hq and I'm glad you are happy with the results x

Q 10 – Micheal – what’s your guilty pleasure?

A –  My guilty pleasure? hmmmm sounds silly but watching tv in bed. Ed bans all screens form the bedroom as he is such a light sleeper so when he is on nights i take the laptop to bed and watch a film and feel really naughty!!

I almost forgot one of my all time faves is Tahitian Tiare Flower i am still saving a small jar

GENERAL –

Ginger dusk is a new launch so i'd like to think it would be around a while but it does depend on how popular it is. if not many people buy a scent they may retire it more quickly to make way for something more people want as we are all always asking them for new fragrances. It does seem to be popular with a lot of people on facebook and twitter though so fingers crossed. I LOVE it - its like a slightly spicier early sunrise

Re Retired fragrances, you quite often find that a new fragrance will be a reimagining of an older retired one. so A child's wish has echoes of beautiful day married with garden hideaway and waikiki melon was a lighter brighter version of mango peach salsa - although in that case MPS won out so maybe something like Greenhouse is out there.

OMG Glenys Phillips get over to www,yankeecandle.co.uk NOW! Greenhouse has just popped up on the special appearances page!!!!

Thank you I have really enjoyed doing this its been lovely to chat. I am a member of the back to you group so you can post questions to me on here whenever you like. My actual facebook profile I keep private as all my close friends and family are on so please don't be offended if I don't accept friend request but chat here and find me on twitter @candlerosa .

Signing off now - thanks for all your kind and lovely comments - looking forward to bringing lots more Yankee gorgeousness to your living room on 26th xxxxxxxxxx night night

TSV ON 26th! 26th i'll be launching at midnight then in the morning show at 9 , midday then 4,6 and 9pm

Caroline Manley – second Webchat – 17th November 2014

Q 1 - Dawn Robinson Hello Caroline x any glues on what the hot colours will be next year ? Xx

A – Hi next year will be very pretty in terms of special effects light florals pale glitters, very delicate and girly! In terms of colour it's very similar - white tone pastals will be huge. Watch this space for our stunning spring kale range!

Q2 – Gayle Metcalfe Hi Caroline Manley I love nails inc and wear it daily! my question to you is about the glitter varnish! Ilove the look but trying to get it off is an absolute nightmare! I use your varnish pots and it just shreds the foam inside! Any tips please as the party season is coming but I can't spend the 30 mins I spent yesterdy trying to get varnish off and i have sooo many nails inc glitters to try! x

A –  Hi Gayle, glitter is amazing and lasts so long without chipping - offset of this is the effort to remove! Few top tips we use in store - if you have a buffer or good grit nail file - lightly buff the surface before removal. This will smooth out the particles so the foam in the pot doesn't rip. Then hold your finger in the pot for a little longer than normal to remove effectively. If you have more time - apply a little piece of cotton soaked in acetone on the nail and wrap your fingers in squares of tin foil. After 10 minutes remove foil and glitter should slip straight off. Lastly try and not load too many layers of glitter on the nail. Our glitter pigment will work in 2 coats for full coverage. Layering coats of glitter, although tempting isn't ideal for removal! Hope this helps! Cx

Q 3 – Dawn Robinson You always look lovely too, What are your favourite QVC beauty products ? X

A – Other than nails inc obviously - I'm obsessed with beauty products and am a huge QVC beauty customer. I can't live without WEN. I'm a total WEN girl - 'friends don't let friends use shampoo!' I also adore Mally volumising mascara - IMHO best on the market! Also anything Josie Maran, Argan Oil infinity cream is a definite makeup bag must have for me. Works for everything - split ends, chapped lips, facial moisturiser - I'm never without a tube.

Q 4 - Sandra Taylor What can I do to stop my nails tearing at the corners. I have never cut my finger nails as they always tear before they get long enough to grow, so van never wear nail varnish.

A – Hi Sandra, try to keep the sides of your nail walls really straight - so no shaping or cutting to create round or oval shape until the free edge of your nail goes past your nail bed. Using cuticle oil twice a day will work really well for you to help eliminate splitting - as your nails need hydration. Also our NailKale superfood basecoat is fantastic for preventing splitting. 79% of customers in our clinical trials found it prevented nail splitting and breakage. Hope this helps Cx

Q 5 – Joy Padley Hi Caroline, any tips for the application of the gel polish? It always streaks when I try to apply especially the lighter ones.

A – Hi Joy, the gel effect first coat should be smooth and streak free. To achieve this immerse brush into the polish and pull out wiping excess polish from one side only! Using the loaded polish side of the brush apply direct to the base coated nail plate, pushing towards the cuticle and pulling back. Once in centre and one on each outer side - so 3 in total is ideal. The less strokes the less streaks will appear. Thanks Cx

Q 6 –  Any tips on painting nails when you have extremely shaky hands

A – Painting nails with shaky hands is a problem so many people have. Make sure you have a table to rest on, always paint your non writing hand first - this makes a huge difference. Load the brush with polish - start in the middle of the nail and push the brush towards the cuticle then pull back. Repeat this step on both outer edges so 3 strokes in total - this should make it easier. Our new bottles also will help as you can remove the silver cap, place on table and use the concave side of the cap to balance each finger you paint - nice trick to add stability. Cx

Q 7 – What do you like doing in your spare time

A – n my spare time, I love to sightsee - I'm living in London 6 years but still find pockets of the city that I've not seen yet or experienced. I also love the theatre - any musical I'm there! This is turn also leads me to equally love any form of karaoke or cheesy music that I can find. Although not a natural dancer I enjoy to think I am!

Q 8 – Michael - What first attracted you to the brand caroline?

A – Hi Michael - well aren't ladies in your life lucky! Coming from a beauty background I was always a nails inc fan, I had a manicure every two weeks for 4 years in my local Nails inc in Cork before I moved to London. Definitely Thea Green our founder was a huge factor in why I joined the brand. She's so inspirational and on the cutting edge in terms of breaking boundaries of what nail polish should be and constantly evolving it. It's amazing to work under a such a wonderful female entrepreneur. I also loved the fashion and nails combination. Why wear the same shade all the time when you can use your nails as a fashion statement. It's the ultimate in affordable on trend luxury and nobody does it better than nails inc!

Q 9 – tell us about nail kale successes!

A – NailKale is amazing Debbie! It's been one of our most successful launches. I think this is because it works for every nail issue. Whether your nails are weak and bendy, peeling, brittle, dull, not growing or ridged - it fixes it all! The amazing kale ingredient which is enriched with iron, protein, calcium and vitamin K will give you super healthy nails. Your polish will last longer and in a matter of days you will see major improvements in your nail issues. Total wonder product! Use it as a treatment in our NailKale superfood base coat or try our NailKale polish shades to experience colour and care in one!

Signing out now - it's 4pm in NY so gotta get back to work! We launched our first US nail bar last week in saks 5th Avenue! Very exciting! Thanks so much everyone for your questions - loved the chat and even had a giant American cookie at the same time so I've had a great hour! C. x

Next Week – 24th Nov, 8-9pm - ask your questions of Michele Hope, one of our original QVC fashionistas. And Axel Ruth (tbc) about your Flora Mare which may have just arrived!

Ps - Extra Chat with Bruce Bodyblade – see his other previous Monday chats on ‘Bodyblade QVC’ facebook page

Bruce bodyblade chat 17th nov incl beach vid and lose 10lb in ten mins

I have a double meaning to my comment about how to lose 10 pounds in 10 minutes. I could also say "how to look like you lost 10 pounds in 10 minutes

If you are consistently doing your Bodyblade workout 3-4 days a week on a regular basis, if you changed nothing else in your diet, didn't lower your portion size, didn't count calories at all, you would still burn additional calories in your workout which would translate to approximately one pound a month!

But, let's take that a step further. The human body is very smart. The more you exercise, the better your body becomes at burning fuel, using calories for that fuel and losing weight. The mitochondria of the cell is the powerhouse of the cell and responsible for much of that. The more you talk to your body via exercise, the more you tell your body to be ready because I am going to workout, the more your body responds by saying "I'm ready to work and will get better each time". The same fuel or calories ingested by a person in shape, vs. a person out of shape will be used differently. The person in bad shape will store more fat calories ; the person in shape will burn more calories for fuel.

My second point is how to look like you have lost 10 pounds in 10 minutes. How many of you are sitting down by the computer or iPad right this moment with your stomach muscles totally relaxed, your postural muscles totally relaxed, round shoulders, bent over?

Well, now I want you to stand up or sit up tall. Tighten your stomach muscles, shoulders back and down, head up straight, not bent over and maintain the tension or tone in your muscles. Remember to breathe normally.

When you maintain good posture, add muscle tone to your tummy, FLATTEN your stomach as a habit, you notice that your waistline is slimmer, you appear taller, more in shape, younger and definitely more vital. We also know what an "old" person looks like, right? Bent over, slow to move, rounded shoulders, a pouched out tummy. I bet you could make yourself look like this in the mirror. Now, I want you to stand in front of the mirror, straighten up, tighten your stomach muscles, suck them in slightly and maintain that posture. How do you look? This can become your habit for adding tension or tone in your body. This is simply re-training your body to be more alert, more ready for action and this will help develop a better looking body that "automatically" assumes this posture and tone. In that way, you can transform your body from slouching to better posture, more vitality and looking younger and slimmer in minutes. Bodyblade helps keep that tone long term, without you needing to do it consciously. Make sense?

Good news is Debbie and I give you a cool preview of the new DVD workout coming in January in our beach workout!! (New DVD will be on Back to You show, & the Bodyblade is returning to QVC then too) You will be able to start adding to your Super 6 today!!!

I hope you enjoy our Super 6 on Marina del Rey beach. The concept is to add a little body movement for strength and flexibility in between each Super 6 exercise. This keeps the heart rate up, adds more strength and range of motion to the body, adds more time to the workout and burns more calories!!!! Enjoy! BH

Published in Back to You

Well, people, all that 'easy' work is paying off. I've been hitting the next level down – am v happy I came back from my writing retreat, and found out I’m lighter than I thought – I’m now nudging down into the next stone. Very happy! And so are some of the ladies on the Till the Fat Lady Slims group on Facebook – so nice to read how they are all getting on.

Plus Glen Campbell, QVC stylist, and presenter Craig Rowe joined the webchat – their Q&A from Facebook is below. Also the Monday Essay would make Marlene and Madonna proud – macro fightback – less bloating, better skin and an incredible fact about what Neanderthal man actually ate – and it did include grains.

Macrobiotic Marvel

Of course if I really listen to my body, I do actually crave the greens and lately, adzuki bean pate! The ‘before’ and after pics of the ingredients and the finished pate are on my QVC blog this week – and it’s really easy to combine a can of adzuki beans, some spring onions, a dash of chopped or pureed garlic, a splash of soy sauce (tamari or shoyu) and a big tablespoon of tahini paste. Whizz it up in your bamix or ninja or vitamix (!) and there you go – yummm!

Also – the pic at the top is of something that makes a very interesting drink – thereby making drinking fluids a bit more interesting – a tea flower! It looks like some kind of bulb and once rehydrated in hot water opens out to this! And tastes amaaaazing! Fun experience too! One of the key things in Freedom Eating is to make sure you drink enough water or key fluids, so this makes it fun!

TTFLS update

Very glad the way things are going on Amazon with Till the Fat Lady Slims book! Some great news!

First, my book has reached number 6 in a diets and weight-loss chart on Amazon! How fab is that?! And there are now nineteen reviews – all 5*!

And the fantastic comments continue, about how people are doing, eg –

Caroline says ‘Started reading Debbie's book and also doing the 5:2 and that's me lost my first stone though I've got another 3-4 to lose. Not too bad over 7 weeks I'm just losing about 2lbs per week I'm feeling motivated.’

Makes me proud, as ever! Info below on how to join up! And the link to the book Till the Fat Lady Slims 2.0 – the ‘When’ Diet, is here – paperback or eBook!

Bodyblade Bonus…

Bruce’s daughter got married this week – I’ve put a couple of pics on the pinned post on the ‘Bodyblade QVC’ group - join it here – Where Bruce also joined us for another impromptu webchat 8pm Monday. He was greeted with some more fab comments –

Sandra says – ‘Have had my Bodyblade just over a month now and I'm doing the super 6 every day sometimes even twice a day! I'm noticing my back is a lot stronger and not getting backaches so often and my joints feel better especially my knees. I've had rheumatism in them for years and tried all sorts from medication to physio.’

Keep up the comments and updates on the groups, everyone! And keep me informed if you’re taking part by emailing me This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Full info on Bodyblade supersix is on the previous B2U blog on this site, as mentioned – read it here.

Ps Bodyblade is back in stock! Apparently, some of you guys have been receiving theirs, and there are more in stock at qvcuk.com so do go buy yours if you haven’t got one yet!

Three Month Challenge

Are you taking part in the Supersix three month challenge? (If you missed it, read all about it on the launch blog here.) Basically you do exercise every day, like the super six one minute exercises on the Bodyblade and follow the Supersix principles of freedom eating – breaking free from food prison, from my semi-autobiographical weight loss book, Till the Fat Lady Slims 2.0 – the ‘When’ Diet.

If you havent’ begun, it’s never too late to start. Then you’ll be ready for Xmas!

On the Till the Fat Lady Slims page (PAGE link is below – it’s different to the group) I have been putting a Tip of the Day – here’s a couple to help motivation for 3 month challengers!

OTHER NEWS –

-       The Secrets to Manifesting Your Destiny – featuring one of my heroes, Wayne Dyer, is on audio too – read all about how visualisation can help you achieve your goals – it certainly works for me. More here.

 -       ‘7 Reasons to Drink Kombucha Tea Every Day I must admit I’ve just re-started my macrobiotic kombucha tea habit and doesn’t it feel good! Had a clear out of a cupboard and found some – you get it online or in good health food stores and some big supermarkets (clearspring do a good one) – here’s why:  read more here

 -       Contraceptive Pioneer – ‘no sex for Future’s babies’ – again I was interested to read this amusing little article this week – mainly because of the research I’ve been doing for ‘French or Dutch’ my new books series. – read the claim the doctor made here!   Not sure if that’d suit many people, but fascinating reading!

See below for The Monday Essay – Madonna’s meal plan better than paleo? Caveman really ate barley grains, scientists say, so is paleo really so logical?

And then the transcripts from Monday 10th November’s webchat on Facebook group Back to You QVC – summaries from Craig Rowe fellow QVC presenter, and lovely Glen Campbell our stylist extraordinaire!

Next week – News stateside! What happened when Bruce and I got together on Santa Monica beach to chat about Bodyblade! Plus Rosa from Yankee candles and Caroline Manley the Nails Inc guest join the Back to You webchat: Mon 17th  November 8-9pm on Back to You QVC group – see below to join.)

Have a fab week!

Best wishes

THE MONDAY ESSAY

Macro Fight Back – Madonna’s Diet Beats Paleo Hands Down

Observer, 6th November 2014

Very interested and somewhat glad this week to see the comments dispelling some of the myths of paleo dieting, versus macrobiotic. I’m not an evangelist, but I do think that one day, the world experts will recommend this type of back-to-basics diet to solve nearly all ills. If a car has sand put in the fuel tank it won’t work properly will it? Well that’s the analogy for putting rubbish food in your body, creating all sorts of illnesses. Remove the rubbish, add some hyper-nutritious food groups and lo and behold the body works its magic – often.

There’s plenty of info online about how one diet versus another can help different people in different ways. One person may feel they prefer a mainly protein diet, as it helps certain conditions – epilepsy for instance, has been featured in a TV show following the progress of a young boy whose parents got it under control that way. (He was actually the son of my brother’s schoolpal.)

But for the vast majority of people, plant based whole food diets are entirely the way to go if nothing else seems to be working, according to more and more studies. I know myself having more or less given up dairy, I feel so much healthier, less breathless, less bloated and lethargic and lacking in energy. That’s just me, and yes I get my calcium in other ways – google it, you’d be surprised how else it can be ingested. Leafy greens are a panacea it seems.

That’s panacea, not panacotta. Or panatone. Or pancakes. Lol.

My daughter Lauren can’t eat wheat, and gets awful problems if she does. I just wish we’d found out years ago – but which doctors sit down and go through a person’s food intake before they hand out pills? Not enough, IMO.

Anyway, if you haven’t listened to any experts yet and have only caught the odd snippet about macro in a detrimental context with people slating Gwynnie or Madge for ‘extreme’ dieting, remember that the way ‘they’ eat is probably how our ancestors did – how we were evolved to – and how our bodies live best. And as Marlene Watson Tara (.com) says, if you don’t look after your body, where are you going to live? Plus the grandaddy of plant based food medicine, Dr T. Colin Campbell has come out and stated that Diet can be used to prevent and reverse cancer just like it prevents and reverses heart disease,” said Dr. Campbell. “A diet high in animal protein increases the amount of carcinogens going to the cells. It increases the enzyme MFO (mixed function oxidase) that causes increased carcinogenic activity.” He's also set up a certified plant based nutrition course in New York and a documentary, 'Plant Pure Nation,' comes out in 2015. more here.

Read the main article about how stone age man REALLY ate and make your own mind up, though. I think – do what works for you - but listen to your body, as in TTFLS book, in order to ensure you create a bespoke solution for your own needs.

Go here to read it, and maybe add a comment.

Jill Dowding-Walker Off to buy GQ in the morning....

Belinda Barber Hi Glen what is the tsv please  x

Glen Campbell Hi Belinda ..The TSV is a quilted water resistant winter warmer for under 40.00

Karen Mullen I knew Glen many years ago he used to work in a clothes shop a few doors away from where I worked in Leeds, we also shared the same club scene

Glen Campbell Hi Karen which shop did you work in?

Karen Mullen I works in bankrupt jeans and on a Saturday night we would hit the warehouse club Remember those days glen

Glen Campbell Hi Karen...I remember bankrupt Jeans and oh yes the warehouse on a Saturday night great fun

Jacqueline Jackson - I'd love to ask Glen a question. a A few years ago I bought the most fabulous Centigrade leather jacket. It has pointed cuffs with with a sort of scalloped edging, ornate old gold coloured buttons and is a dark chocolate colour. Sadly it's too big for me now as I've lost 3 stones ( hooray) but I still have it in my wardrobe because it's so lovely and I would love another one. It's a shot in the dark I know but if you don't ask and all that! Thank you x

Glen Campbell Hi Jaqueline I remember that jacket and yes it was fab! Well done on your weight loss ..unfortunately i doubt if we will be able to get this jacket back in stock, stick with Centigrade we get new styles all the time.

Jacqueline Jackson Thank you for answering my question. I love the centigrade brand and I bought a down filled coat for winter which is just fab quality. Also thank you for explaining how outfits can be put together on Qvc. I've found that I've lost confidence fashion wise since I turned 50 and your input is really useful x

Jill Dowding-Walker Do you mind designing clothing for plus size customers? Are there any particular problems that need to be overcome?

Sharon Harvey Glen, you have had such a fantastic Career! What has been your high point so far? X

Debbie Flint Hey Glenn! Looking fwd to tonight! Will post a pic of tsv soon. Am I. Dressing room at QVC. Enjoy the chat! And tell everyone what the worst faux pas is in fashion that u see older ladies commit! X

Glen Campbell Hi Deb looking forward to the TSV launch this evening. As far as fashion faux pas - trying to hard - Coco Chanel said ‘always take your last accessory off again before you walk out the door.’

Sandra Gregory Good evening Glen, I love Centigrade coats, so lovely and warm. I bought one for my Mum who is 82 for her for Christmas last year, she loved it too. X

Glen Campbell Hi Sandra..Do check out this evenings TSV its another good little coat and say Hi to your mum form me.

Glen Campbell I got into fashion from watching old movies from the 30s 40s 50s with my gran..

Jill Dowding-Walker What item of clothing would you bring back into top fashion? I think the era of hats must have been fab! Not knitted bobble hat, but the men in trilby or bowler and the ladies in fabulous creations...

Glen Campbell Hi Jill funnily enough trilbies and smart top coats for men are back in fashion and for the ladies Id love to see evening gloves come back.

Jill Dowding-Walker I hope they take off in a big way!

Sylvia Jarvis Hi Glen ~ what happened to washable suede? I bought a Centigrade jacket about 8 years ago, but haven't seen anything recently; is suede out of favour?

Glen Campbell Hi Sylvia the price of suede a few years ago did rocket making it a really expensive purchase for the customer.

Glen Campbell Hi Girls which of your Centigrade coats have you been wearing this weekend? its getting really cold brrrr

Sharon Harvey It's freeeeeeezing

Glen Campbell i know Ive got my feather and down coat on today

Sharon Harvey Mine is Marilyn Monroe, loved her curves, her Heels and oooozed effortless glamour & sex appeal x

Alison Keenan - Without wishing to sound as though I am boasting not only have I been lucky enough to work with the delightful Glen for many years, but I also own 9 Centigrade coats! The first I bought was the first TSV and full hour show that we presented together. Good times  Hope all well with you lovely man xx

Glen Campbell Hi Alison... its Centigrade’s 9th anniversary and we launched the very first coat together all those years ago..

Zoe Robins please could you do some waterproof parka length coats, I looked online at your range but no waterproof, all water resistant, you do lovely looking coats though.

Glen Campbell Hi Zoe Waterproof coats are a whole different kettle of fish.. Seams have to be taped, fabric has to be100% water proof and all that comes at a premium.. I agree it would be nice to have one in the range something we can look at a later date

Jill Dowding-Walker Thank you Glen! I really appreciate your advice! I enjoyed this evening and I hope you did too!  x x x

Jacqueline Jackson Thank you Glen x

Glen Campbell I've loved every minute of the web chat its been great chatting with the girls. ..Big Love Glen x

Published in Back to You

Had a fabulous weekend away. At the end of the two days at Julie Cohen and Rowan Coleman’s writing retreat in Somerset, I’d -

- completed over a quarter of the revisions to Hawaiian Affair, for my publisher Choc Lit

- finalised a new title for my WIP - a series of novellas based on a scandalous ideal in 1920's, a kind of Mr Selfridge meets Call the midwife meets Downton Abbey.

- worked out the theme, the byline for the front cover and covered off the plot arcs for the first seven novellas in the series and the overall first series arc.

- made lots of new pals

- heard some fabulous tips

- walked in a wood with Badger viewing areas, a woodland classroom and a pig you could stroke (I was surprised how warm its skin was – don’t know why I thought it would be cooler!)

- ate some fabulous food and avoided too much bad stuff, and even did a bit of Bodyblade in my lovely studio room that overlooked the rolling distant hills. Read more about it on my News blog from Sunday, here.

It’s how I write, getting away from it all. Then I can totally focus and not let life get in the way. Which it does for most of us of course. But some of the promised we made at the end of the course were a schedule of what we would do by when. And at least I know after the punishing schedule I had this year, that I am capable of it, even if it means little sleep and stiff shoulders! Now I’ve just got to do it!

Meanwhile the Till the Fat Lady Slims weight loss book continues to sell well. I guess books in that genre always will. The thing is, what do you do when they… don’t? Joanna Penn wrote a feature about what to do if your book isn’t selling – more for first time self-publishers, but interesting none the less – find out more about the checklist she’s created after years of her own experiences. AudioBook of the Week – The Rivers of London

Ben Aaronovitch’s supernatural book came on the back of our Hallowe’en anthology, so I was just in the mood to read about river sprites and wizards and people being possessed – in a ‘cosy crime’ kind of way though – it’s a bit of both! But the star of the audiobook is the narrator – Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is definitely on my watch list now – his narration was funny, great accents, fabulous delivery and excellent timing. His Mr Punch voice is utterly spine chilling too! He lifted a good book to a great one – I’d listen to it again and there aren’t many I’d say that about! 9 out of ten from me. Here’s a taster:

“My name is Peter Grant and until January I was just a probationary constable in that mighty army for justice … the Metropolitan Police Service (known) as the Filth to everybody else). My only concerns in life were how to avoid a transfer to the Case Progression Unit – where you do paperwork so real coppers don't have to - and finding a way to climb into the panties of the outrageously perky WPC Leslie May. Then one night, in pursuance of a murder inquiry, I tried to take a witness statement from someone who was dead but disturbingly voluble, and that brought me to the attention of Inspector Nightingale, the last wizard in England…”

Update on Paperback of whole Hawaiian Trilogy in PG

‘Course what you could do is offer an unbelievable deal! Well, a good one – IMHO, lol! All three of my romance novels, Hawaiian Escape, Hawaiian Affair and Hawaiian Retreat, in that order, will be going up on Amazon for one month only in one bumper paperback, in PG version for gifting. More news next week, when I’ll have the big cover reveal! But do get ready to buy it on December 1st! The preorder will go on sale before that.

How to’s

Lots of people still asking advice about where to begin with self-publishing, naturally. There is a plethora of info out there. Notably some of the sites listed on my ‘beginner’s guide’ – see below. Just recently another person commented on the guest blog I did for The Creative Penn in April – asking about how to set up a readers group to help get reviews. This was my reply –

“Some beginner authors I know build up their social media platform, first, following and chatting to followers/readers of other authors who write in a genre similar to their own. Then you can ask if any of these new contacts could help with reviews. You may find, as I did, that you can form your own little beta readers group on Facebook.  (Relationship building is what social media is there for nowadays, of course, so a newcomer should in general be doing this anyway to build up their platform if they want to be taken seriously later by a publisher.) Good luck!”

Soooome piiiiig!

Funny pig-selfies - piglies? - at Folly Farm in Somerset this weekend, where I stole away for a two day writing retreat. It was such lovely weather and gorgeous views - I posted lots on Facebook and Twitter. Makes such a difference to get away from it all on your own sometimes, doesn't it? Are you the same? Or what's your idea of an ideal mini break? (you can reply to this - I get it, not a spambot!) I got to stroke a pig, never been close up to a pig before - its skin was warm, with wiry hair. Dunno why I thought it'd be cool. Anyway that's another 'first' this month - to add to the indoor skydiving! (Video below.)

It was a lovely weekend - I wish I could have stayed longer. I even took my bodyblade with me, which came in handy as lots of hours sitting on my rump typing, does nothing for fitness! It's back in stock on qvcuk.com at the moment by the way. Had some more lovely posts from ladies using it and my TTFLS system*, so am hoping for some more before and afters come January when my Back to You well being show returns to QVC for its third run (which is still tbc but quite likely atm.) At least I've finished the creative stage in updating the non-fiction, (TTFLS is now out on Amazon) even if I'm only a quarter of the way through the edit on my first steamy romance, Hawaiian Affair, for Choc Lit!

(Incidentally my weight loss book has been going great guns on amazon. It's currently riding high at number six in this amazon weight loss chart - am very proud! If you want to read the first bit for free, just go here.)

Learnt some useful new tips about the theme of a story which came in handy for my Work in Progress, 'French or Dutch' (working title - first one due out beginning of February.) Anyway it was a lovely break and I got lots done.

Mind you, I needed a break after my recent trip into mid air in Milton Keynes! Yes, as you can read on my latest QVC blog from Friday, Gill Gauntlett and I went skydiving - ok, it is indoors but nonetheless there's a great video clip or two! And the most adorable video of my new niece, showing how to make grizzling babies go to sleep using an ordinary household device! Do watch them all - go here. There's a question for grandparents too!

I had a nice week on QVC - did you enjoy last week? Had some warm weather didn't we? Mind you many of my shows were late! I'm getting my body ready for my week in LA it seems. Have been using tan accelerator - hope it's warm enough to swim each day. Can't wait! It's due to be around mid-seventies when I'm out there. T-shirt weather at least! I'll still be joining in our Back to You facebook group live webchat on Monday night tho (17th) with Rosa from yankee Candles and Caroline Manley from Nails inc!

The last Back to You blog had a great Q&A with SJ from Bare Minerals, to tie in with her mini series and masterclass last week on QVC - read her Q&A and my recent update here. Tonight (10th) it's the turn of our fashionista, the lovely Glen Campbell as well as my pal, presenter Craigy, who has some interesting news - join them on facebook group 'Back to You QVC' tonight 8-9pm.

Anyway, hope you had a good weekend.

Chat soon - from LA! My hols begin this Thursday for a week! Whoop!

luv

Well it's here! If you're really quick, our little anthology of short spooky stories is free - till Saturday 1st! Some are just a couple of pages. Others are 14,000 words long! Mine is 'When Dreams Return,' a short novella about two friends who use a magic spell book to try to conjure up an ideal husband, to replace the one that disappeared…

go here to get the anthology today from Amazon - free in eBook.

(The paperback is also available to buy. And if you're too late, it's still going to be only 99p so do let me know what you think of it!)

If you wanted to win a paperback copy however you could come join today's Facebook event - an online Hallowe'en 'party!' All day from mid-morning till 9 pm tonight (31st.) Lots of fun competitions, banter and funnies. What's your witch's name? What's your spookiest dream? What's your fave pop video with a scary theme? Join us here, on till 9pm.

As we speak I am currently still awake, helping daughter Lauren transform herself, only it's a twist on the usual Cinderella theme - she's actually becoming a pumpkin! Theoretically! If it works, I'll post a pic next week! Plus the rest of the dressing up gear, bought last minute in a midnight Tesco frenzy, will be put to good use today when a few pals join me to whip up excitement about Hallowe'en on the Facebook party. Thing is, I've seen some wickedly crass fancy dress costumes, but I think I'm too chicken to post them! Join us to see what we do end up posting! (And dont forget your freebie!)

Plus the latest Back to You chat features a fun, enlightening Q&A with Leighton Denny the nails king; explores how the Greatest Love of All can help you lose weight; plus includes some fab new testimonials from our groups, including from one lady who lost three inches off her waist and another is down a couple of dress sizes, after using Freedom Eating and Bodyblade. Are you taking part in the Three Month Trim n tone Challenge? Ready for when Back to You returns in January? Keep me informed. There's a little tip every day on our TTFLS page on facebook, anyone can see it, go here for inspiration!

Next week on my QVC blog, what happened when Gill Gauntlett and I went indoor skydiving in Milton Keynes! OMG my hip muscles ache!! On today's one, (it will appear on the QVC tab above once it's been posted) see some of the most wicked selfies ever! #CEOSelfie... yes really! lol.

Have a great week!

And if you'd like to reply, it comes to me, not a spambot.

Best wishes
