Debbie Flint

So my Mothers’ Day giveaway went with a bang! And apart from the qvc blog comp giveaway, for those who didn’t realise I had a freebie eBook short story on offer, called When Dreams Return. Plus a 99p offer over the weekend for my Till the Fat Lady Slims weight loss /autobiographical book. They both sold well and I had lots more reviews added to Amazon. They’re one way of measuring success if you self-publish – for instance, my Hawaiian Affair is just 4 short of 100 five star reviews, and I’m sure that helps some people decide what to choose. Does it you? It does me.

Numbers of sales/downloads is also a measure – 2390 in UK and 285 in US got When Dreams Return. This means I now have 14 pages (or 70 book) ‘also bought’s’ – where your book can appear reciprocally on others’ pages too – it all helps.

But the biggest measurement is of course the charts. On Amazon there are loooooads of charts, some very obscure. However, I’m glad to say I reached number one in the freebie chart for WDR under ‘books/fiction/horror’ – which meant more people would see it if they explored the charts looking for new titles. And even better, I got as high as number 23 in the overall UK kindle free book chart!

And very pleasing it was too!

Till the Fat Lady Slims also reached the heady heights in the paid charts of around 450, one of the highest positions any of my books has reached – so thank you everyone who took part. One of the best things about a kindle countdown deal for those registered to their exclusive service KDP select (a box you tick when you upload your ebook to amazon via KDP) is the new countdown analysis – statistics which showed me I sold over 1000% more books in that four days than previously. Anyway, it all helps to spread the word about me as an author, even if it doesn’t rack up the dollars massively. Interesting promotion tools though eh? And well worth considering if you self-publish.

In fact, if you do, next week I’m going to feature a guide to what tools you can use in your quest to promote your own first self-published book – some are obvious, but some you might not know about, so do come back next week!

Diary of a Wannabe Shopping Channel Presenter – THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS

And now Mothers’ Day weekend promotions are over, the serious countdown begins to the next book – a fictional (honestly!) story of a twenty-something trainee journalist and her quest to become the next star of home shopping TV, or selly-telly. Behind the scenes shenanigans and an unusual romance feature in this cross between Bridget Jones, Alan Partridge, and Eddie Murphy in HolyMan. Here’s a little teaser of the cover – the whole thing will be revealed next week! And the countdown is on – till Easter weekend – just two weeks to go!

PLUS – NEWSFLASH – both Hawaiian Escape and Hawaiian Affair will both be on offer at just £1.52 Easter weekend – don’t miss it!

PS – as promised -

FRIDAY FICTION FOCUS

Gosh what a palaver I had this week on kdp (where you publish your eBooks to Amazon.) I’d uploaded the latest novel, Hawaiian Escape in Steamy version so you can now buy the paperback. But because you use a different site for the paperback (createspace) I requested that it be manually linked to the eBook on Amazon. That way Hawaiian Escape (Steamy) appears on one page with a choice of kindle (eBook) or paperback. Easy, right?

Well – apparently not! An email arrived which frustrated the heck out of me! I said ‘we have as requested linked the Steamy Version to the PG Version’ … What?!! Firstly – how. Secondly – what the..! Anyway, if the Steamy Paperback disappeared this week, I can only apologise. But it’s now available properly, and showing on the same page as the alternative kindle version.

The final book in the trilogy – Hawaiian Retreat, Helen’s Story - is coming out end of June! (All my book links are below).

This week’s info about self-publishing, below, includes the scary news about Amazon lowering some royalty rates and whether you should stick with just them or publish your works elsewhere – a theme which will continue next week too.

Giveaway Don’t forget – now it’s only TWO weeks left until the Mothers’ Day Giveaway! All the info is on the main RiWiSi page of my QVC Blog (see blogs tab above) but basically When Dreams Return will be a freebie on eBook via Amazon, and – fanfare! – latest update is that Till the Fat Lady Slims anti-diet eBook will now be on offer for the weekend at just 99p! That’s nearly 70% off! Whoop!

Have a great week!

OTHER NEWS

-          Diversify Your Publishing: Why Amazon’s ACX Royalty Change Matters. Apparently if you were thinking of creating audio books via ACX for amazon (audible) the royalties have now gone down. It raises an interesting question about whether to stick with just amazon if you self-publish, whether or not you create audio books. Next week I’ll be hearing from Lynda Renham about why she diversifies and also why she never sells her books at 99p. Till then, do read this article, where you’ll also read in the comments below, lots of things you never knew about audio book processes.

‘When Dreams Return’ – short story – coming Mothers’ Day 2014!

Week 7 of 18 – Our Break the Habit Challenge Continues – and some key 'aha' moments...

This week  - In the Monday Essay - both sides of the Paleo Diet – what’s the logic behind it? ... massiv massiv massiv massiv info about how great Vitamin D is – see ‘other news’ below… My omega Quest continues - listen to the UK’s top expert talking about EPA fish oils and how they help mood, at a recent webinar… Plus see bottom left of this page for the archived Monday updates packed with fab health facts (stretching back to January, including links to all the January QVC Back to You shows)

It’s a timing thing…

This week I was at Champneys spa with my QVC colleague and bestest boy pal craigy, (more info on the latest QVC Blog, go to blogs page) and I realised just how much my timing was out. Eating wise. Freedom eating is my thing, isn’t it? It’s what I do? It’s what I help explain to others? And there I was unwisely and out of habit – choosing not quite the right timing to have my dinner etc. Yes waiting till you’re 6 on the hunger scale is everything. And I’m tightening up on it from now on, to reach my goal of a flatter more toned belly by end June in the Break the Habit challenge. Deal? Deal. Now keep me to it! Lol.

Sis Linda was telling me she also has been being really strict with the waiting till the right time and stopping when satisfied (as well as not having any sugar at all, if she can avoid it – like her old Weight Watchers bars are NOT ok. That’s her choice – you have to do yours. And this week she’s lost another 3 lb! Three! On a little 5 foot body like hers, that’s substantial! She’s happy with knowing her weight and measuring, so well done sis. She also raised an interesting topic in her observations about chocolate and really choosing the right thing for your body each time it’s time to eat…

Coping with Crisis – Stress is a challenge though, for all of us.

Linda’s quote – “Chocolate craving!!! .......... At the weekend I was listening to my body and it really wanted chocolate! Now as some of you know I'm also trying to cut out those hidden sugars. So when I selected my favourite 70%Lindt with sea salt I also picked up 85% Lindt with far less sugar! So had two squares of the 85% and it gave me the cocoa hit! Then tasted the 70% which really didn't do it for me. Really listening to how food makes me feel is a Part of freedom eating I'm really learning from! I'm always going to be someone who weighs myself once a week! And that's ok too as this is a journey for sure! Anyone else finding that when they give themselves permission with no guilt suddenly the desire isn't as great!!??”

Fabulous!

TTFLS A cornerstone of the advice I give on the facebook groups is based on Freedom Eating which Linda’s talking about above. (All about listening to your body and learning to be around food how slim people are. Theoretically.) Am so glad the book Till the Fat Lady Slims (2002) is helping people like my sis. Thanks to everyone who’s been posting nice reviews on Amazon, where you can get the paperback or eBook, too – like this five star one from Karen Whenman.

“I just love this book, it is helping me overcome 50 plus years of dieting, which ultimately has cost me thousands and left me with the same old weight problem. This book frees you from all that and when reading it you can relate to so much of the content. My honest opinion is that I only wish I had read this book when it originally came out, but better late than never. Buy it, put it into practice and you will not be disappointed.”

And to be honest, that’s exactly why I love Freedom Eating so much. Just look in the Till the Fat Lady Slims book and you will see what I mean. Just like so many of the ladies on the group did – I keep seeing lovely updates – mainly on Break the Habit (closed sister group) – which is so rewarding I can’t tell you. Even when there’s a blip, people keep encouraging each other to get back to their goals – whatever they may be.

Bodyblade was back on with Bruce this week! And he’s done a special video for all those who wanted ‘sitting down’ exercises – hope this little video helps! Click here to watch it! And click here to buy it from QVC – it may be on advanced orders by the time you click, so ‘book’ yours for april or may!

Vitamin D In the News PLUS there was all that stuff about Vitamin D. Three separate findings all extolling its virtues – this one about it helping heart health, this one about it helping with social behaviour and brain development, and this one linking it to better breast cancer survival. Fascinating. Sounds like the sunny weather couldn’t have come at a better time! Roll up your sleeves and get some rays – 15 mins a day I read somewhere. Then I have to wear high sun factors – I can’t go out in the sun for long, got photosensitive skin – but that’s a whole ‘nother story! Lol . Where’s me SAD light?! Hehe.

Twins’ Faces Aged by Smoking Anti smoking day this week, so here’s a feature from my current QVC blog – soooo fascinating to see how two twins’ faces were affected by different smoking habits! Interesting eh! They say the sun is ageing, well I guess smoking is a close second for many. Click here to see them all. And it seems the give-up campaigning is helping – click here to read how the number of smokers in the UK is set to fall below 20% for the first time in a century. Yay!

THE MONDAY ESSAY

The PALEO DIET – PROS AND CONS

Are we really supposed to eat only how cave man ate? What about grains? The interesting thing about this feature is that it gives the other side – I’m not at all sure about loads of meat, but lean protein seems to make sense for a lot of people and you have to choose what’s right for you. I liked reading the main story tho, and what happened when switching to the diet. Do google it for more info, but here’s a good jist of it.

Personally I’d say if you’re able to eat as nature intended, with lots of fresh veg and leafy greens every day, with protein from the relevant source for you (beans etc, but I do have the occasional egg and I like fish), it’s much better than some of our western 21st century diets. Maybe give it a go and report back and let me know what you think! The rest of the ‘essay’ is pretty much written for me, on this article -

Published in Back to You

Hello all!

Just a quickie - to say that the Monday Updates are becoming very popular on my website now, on the Back to You page. Don't forget to go read all about some of the brilliant health research that's happening at the mo - and the Monday Essay is all about 'one of the most amazing medicinal foods/drinks available' - miso soup! Why? Well, I must admit I wondered that originally when I first discovered it. But just google it and you'll be surprised - really good for those mid afternoon munchies moments, I find. Several people have asked where you get it and my answer is... Tescos! hehe! Actually you can get it in paste form in good health food stores too, but I just get the little grey and red box with the miso paste sachets for a cup-a-soup type drink.

Plus - some funnies on the latest QVC blog - (go to qvc blog tab on website) - including Alison Young our beauty presenter who made a rather unfortunate boo boo when she was talking about the 'Pick of the Day'... do go watch! Plus there are sneaky peeks as usual of upcoming bargains. And a way of 'travoltifying' your name, after John Travolta's recent Oscars ceremony slip of the tongue. V funny!

RiWiSi, all about the books, has some interesting info if you're writing your own book. And don't forget the useful resource of the archives if you want to find out more about back issues, including tons of beginners info about self-publishing!

This week I've also added a little 'Work in Progress' page - to keep me going and gee me along!

In fact, the news about my writing is that the short story called 'When Dreams Return,' begun last October and being finished for a freebie giveaway on eBook for Mothers' Day, is at 'cover design' stage - I may give you a little teaser next week!

If you haven't yet read Hawaiian Escape, BTW, remember the steamy complete version is now on amazon. Is anyone not on amazon? Is there any other platform you use which you wish more books could be published on? Do let me know - if you don't ask, you don't get, eh!

Anyway, with the sunshine winning the battle with the clouds, down south at least, it's lovely to know Spring' just around the corner... We hope!

Have a great week, and don't forget to leave me a comment or two!

I'm off for a little break at a spa with Craigy my QVC BFF, or OOMBFF to be precise in case Jilly's reading this! hehe!

Best wishes

Week 6 of 18 – Our Break the Habit Challenge Continues

Getting Geeky So this week, there I was minding my own business and happily posting merrily away on our ‘Back to You QVC’ and ‘Break the Habit BTU (closed)’ groups on facebook – all kinds of things about health and diet, when lo and behold, up popped a little link about even more studies showing EPA is so essential. Not one, but two! So I’ve put them below. Basically, it helps with arteries and with kids who have lack of concentration. More new studies for Debbie to get excited over and be all geeky! Yay! Lol. Links are below.

In the News PLUS there was all that stuff about not eating too much protein either – which I’m ok with ‘cos I don’t really eat meat, just fish. But did you look past the headlines? Sometimes it pays to. Click here for more info. But it does make you wonder doesn’t it, considering the Atkins diet – mainly protein! – was all the rage nearly a decade ago. So what to believe? Well Helen asked that very pertinent question this week on the Facebook BTH group – ‘you can’t have this, you can’t have that, what do I do, it’s driving me mad!’ And to be honest, that’s exactly why I love Freedom Eating so much. Just look in the Till the Fat Lady Slims book and you will see what I mean. Just like so many of the ladies on the group did – I keep seeing lovely updates – mainly on Break the Habit (closed sister group) – which is so rewarding I can’t tell you. Including a bodyblade update!

 Jacqueline says –

bodyblade tones your arms and back initially. If you can master the vertical move it really works your stomach muscles. Hand on heart I can honestly say my shape has changed in 5 weeks. My bra is looser on my back, my waist is smaller and my arms have definition. I love it and it has been my solution to target my upper body as I cycle and walk a lot already

PS -  Bodyblade back on with Bruce mid-March and Back to You returns weekly to QVC UK in September!

Extras

-          Ten Day Sugar Detox Six times New York best-seller, author Dr Mark Hyman explains how ten days could cut your illness and improve your shape – a great video on this link explains it all – good for beginners to the whole Sugar Conspiracy.  click here for more info And do have a good look around his site too, for little gems like this:–

-          Sugar is 8 times more addictive than cocaine –Being addicted to sugar and flour is not an emotional eating disorder. It’s a biological disorder, driven by hormones and neurotransmitters that fuel sugar and carb cravings — leading to uncontrolled overeating. This is not a limited phenomenon. It’s the reason nearly 70 percent of Americans and 40 percent of kids are overweight. In one study, Harvard scientists found that a high-sugar milkshake (compared to a low-sugar one) not only spiked blood sugar and insulin and led to sugar cravings, but it caused huge changes in the brain. The sugar lit up the addiction center in the brain like the sky on the Fourth of July. Think cocaine cookies, morphine muffins or smack sodas!” Still want to feed them to your kids? Actually , sometimes ‘a little of what you fancy’ does NOT do you any good whatsoever! Lol. More here.

-          Manuka honey on food unwrapped Medicinal honey light years away? Apparently not! Watched ‘Food Unwrapped’ on ch4 showing how Manuka – my mainstay for anything from sore throats to general malaise to Daisy dog’s ear infection (she eats it, it doesn’t go in her ears! Lol). Was very glad to see their report backed up my beliefs – how nice when that happens!  click here for more info

-          My Sister’s book recommendation – the two day diet plan This is the one which Kathy Tayler told my sis Linda Bignell about (the Red carpet Manicure guest  - she’s my sister!). Linda likes Freedom Eating but also likes a bit of a guide, so this is working well for her! Click here for more info.

-          Follow up – to last week’s feature about omega 3’s – they hit the news again this week:

High consumption of omega-3 fish oils may reduce artery calcification

An intake of omega-3 fatty acids comparable to those of people living in Japan may be linked to protection against artery calcification and heart disease, according to new research.

and

Omega-3 supplements may boost neuropsychological measures for kids who need most support

Daily supplements of omega-3 fatty acids may improve attention, processing speed, executive function and hand-to-eye coordination in malnourished children, scientists report.

THE MONDAY ESSAY

The POWER OF MISO

One of the best things to come out of my macrobiotic cookery week in Scotland in April 2012 with lovely Marlene Watson Tara was picking up some really good regular diet habits. Daily green drinks, daily portions of leafy greens and home made soups (all on her website) and making my own Miso soup.

Miso is a fermented soybean paste used to flavour various dishes, but most widely used as a stock to season soups.

Miso’s natural fermentation process creates a combination of enzymes that strengthen and nourish the intestinal tract.  As a result, the blood that nourishes the balance of the body is much stronger.  The quality of our blood creates the people we are, and the health we possess.  That all makes sense when I drink it. As you may know I do Freedom Eating (as in my Till the Fat Lady Slims book) and it demands that you listen to your body to help decide what to eat and how much of it. Well I almost never ‘don’t feel like’ eating miso soup. I also love putting white miso into the green soup (with toasted almond sprinklings) – yummmm!

Marlene’s also done a video on how to make your own miso soup at home, nice and easy. She says – “This basic miso soup should be a daily staple of your diet.  It encompasses the use of sea vegetables to mineralize the blood and a variety of fresh vegetables.  The balance of these ingredients creates a strengthening energy vital to life.  Miso has been used for centuries in the Orient as a remedy for cancer, weak digestion, low libido several types of intestinal infections, lowering cholesterol, and so much more and is one of the world’s most medicinal foods.

Do google it some more, and you’ll want to give it a go. You can get ready to make cup a soup type versions, which are better than nothing, but the pastes in pots or sachets of paste are the best rather than dried. And making your own soup from scratch like on this video will be best of all! Plus OMG it’s delicious!

Enjoy!

...PLUS DEB’S RECIPE FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE!

The Magic of Omega 3.

In response to a query on the Back to You QVC facebook group, about life after anti-depressants, and how omega 3 fish oils can help so many aspects of your health. This was my response, with input from the leading UK industry expert.

I too was on SSRI's for 6 months, once, as some of u already know. (10mg low dose citalopram in mid 2000's) I cut down slowly and came off them after which it took another two years to really get back to normal, but high dose EPA omega 3 fish oils really help all brain function - and there's a lot of proof available for this.

Professor Alex Richardson, senior research fellow at Oxford University and the UK’s foremost omega 3 and brain expert, (founder of Food and Behaviour Research (FAB Research),) has dedicated her life to better nutrition and was behind the original Durham school trials which led to the explosion of omega 3's in everything. I interviewed her once when I worked in the health food industry (why do u think Sadie runs a health store in my romance novels...! Lol).

Anyway she is fascinating and her site FABresearch.org has tons of info and references to double blind placebo controlled randomized scientific studies about EFA's (essential fatty acids) amongst which omega 3 (not 6 or 9 btw) are the most important ones to take more of – and they need to be the long-chain ones, EPA and DHA.

Yes eat relevant oily fish. But if anyone is worried about possible contamination problems (e.g. pregnant women, who our esteemed health authorities say should only have it once a week), high quality supplements are the obvious alternative, she says. (In fact – even for pregnant women, all the evidence shows that the benefits of eating fish and seafood far outweigh any possible risks from mercury etc – see FAB Research Analysis of the study from Hibbeln et al, the Lancet 2007 if you don’t believe me – but that’s another story…)

Experts believe it should be a minimum of 500-1000mg of the actual EPA omega 3 per day (American Psychiatric Association recommend at least 1000mg EPA+DHA as an ‘add-on’ treatment for depression – show your doctor the reference if he doesn’t believe you -  http://www.fabresearch.org/1060 )

(But with supplements – do check the labels, some say 1000mg omega 3 per cap on the bottle, but the EPA part is low, eg 186mg per tab is typical.). Get the highest dose of EPA in each tab or capsule or spoonful.

FYI I take the brand Ideal Omega. It's 700mg per tablet. I take two a day. But even 1 a day would be a big help.

Another expert, Dr Tom Gilhooly of Glasgow, takes 3000mg per day and treats drug addicts, prisoners, ADHD kids etc. His passion is explaining the vital importance of the omega 6 to omega 3 balance. Too much six (we get it in meat, dairy, oils etc so do NOT need to take extra) is what leads to imbalances which are not natural and create concentration problems etc. there is a fabulous blood test u can pay for (I think via Glasgow health solutions, or something like that), which tells u your current ratio, and how much extra omega 3 u need to get closer to the healthiest balance of 2:1 or 3:1 (twice or three times as much omega 6 to 3) In problem patients he has found them to have 15:1, or even 35:1 for an alcoholic.

I went to a healthy eating conference run by FABresearch in September. The top pic shows how much better a brain cell was functioning with enough omega 3, rather than with too much omega 6. Think of it like this – omega 6 comes from animals, mainly, and animal fat goes hard at room temperature right? Well fish oils stay fluid, they don't even freeze in a freezer if u get pure enough ones. Naturally they wouldn’t, given where fish live.
So -
If your body's given enough omega 3 it will form cell membranes from fluid fats, rather than those from omega 6 that are tougher for signals to get through. Sluggish cells, sluggish thoughts. Alternatively, lots of omega 3 EPA will allow cell membranes to form which are much more conducive to allowing signals to pass around your body more efficiently. That’s why a lack affects so many illnesses and conditions and aspects of the body - see list below.

That make sense to anyone so far?

Tons of scientific studies have been done, but the drug companies still rule the doctors, on the whole. So if this evidence about omega 3 is so solid, 'why don't doctors tell u that'? Well some docs do, in fact, ever more now are understanding about how important nutrition is to illness and health.

I think I got most of that right. It's from memory. But hope it helps. Will copy into a separate strand so it's easier to refer back to in future.

Has anyone started taking higher dose EPA's and found exactly what I said above?
It also stops my daughter’s eczema, alongside avoiding sulphates in washing gels.
It also helps eyes and skin and hair and nails
And the immune system
And oh my GOD are they good for anti-inflammatory effects eg arthritis etc helped HUGELY (alongside avoiding the food that causes the inflammation in your body, sugars and breads in me for instance. EPA works on the same pathways as eg ibuprofen hence has a natural anti-inflammatory effect. Got arthritis? Take huge doses for a month, and see what happens)
And it is proven to help the heart
And high blood pressure (it has a slight blood anti-thickening effect)
And high cholesterol (my sis in law took high dose 4 weeks and her cholesterol went right down - that was her)
Need any more convincing? Read her book 'you are what you feed them'. She's a clever lady, dr Alex Richardson. Or check out a recent webinar she did for Nutraingedients (you have to log in – but it’s free and will give you – and your doctor! - loads more info - http://www.nutraingredients.com/Research/Dr-Alex-Richardson-Q-A-Nutritional-Lipids-for-Mood-and-Behaviour
Pps your body is capable of making its own EPA from veggie sources but the conversion rate from (ALA? Flax etc?) is very very tiny and tons has to be right in the body to make it efficient. But if u don't eat fish it's better than nothing. And there are now some vegan-friendly supplements of EPA and DHA – although they’re expensive.  Best tho is take EPA direct.(my capsules don't repeat on me btw).
THEN your body can make the next omega 3 down, called DHA. DHA is vital if you're pregnant or nursing, and for adequate brain cell formulation in under 5's. Most tablets with EPA have DHA too. Just check how much of each – and v broadly, go for a higher EPA:DHA ratio for depression, and higher DHA:EPA ratio for pregnancy as a rule of thumb.

Ok there you go.
If u do start taking high dose (1000-2000mg per day, nb u can't overdose unless you're on warfarin or blood thinning drugs) EPA, give it at LEAST four weeks, pref two months. (Google it or check with docs re other medication tho, eg warfarin. But remember some docs and nurses and even midwives come to that have not a clue about EPA's studies. I often find people who claim 'there is no evidence or no studies to show that...' Just haven't done enough research so remain uninformed. About so many things. Like those silly twin doctors on that 'fat v sugar ' prog, but that's another story a dont get me started in that! Lol)

And don't eat loads of chocolate. If you're like me that makes me feel down and depressed. Google other foods that do same.

Also a SAD light, thirty mins a day in dull weather or if u don't get out, can really lift the spirits. They do me, but then as u know, I am a bat. And quite right about the exercise. And do freedom eating and stop when satisfied not full, will make your body more happy too.

HYDRATION and other curiosities…

"Every cell in your body works better when properly hydrated…” More of which elsewhere. BUT I’m often asked what I do each day/week/month. And here’s what I do. It won’t be identical for everybody – do your own research and find out what’s right for you and your situation and your loved ones, then take action!)

DEB’S OWN RECIPE FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE!

And when cell membrane is made of the right fats, ie omega 3 fatty acids - they are almost always lacking in most of us, hence I take 1400mg EPA (2caps) a day. Then all the neurons can fire better, the signals can work better and we can function and heal better. (As per Dr Alex Richardson wonderful book 'they are what you feed them')

But I do add safeguards cos I don't do it perfectly -

I take a multi vit/min, 1000mg time release vit C, CoQ10 and another one i cant remember, but as per Patrick Holford book.

 THEN

Add plant based diet plus appropriate protein (less than you'd think), (or change your eating radically and solve many many illnesses and maladies, as per macrobiotic miracle diet - as per Marlene Watson Tara book n website n youtube videos), including, vital each day: miso soup and greens, and at least 7 a day, none of them fruit, one max 2 pieces extra and pref high sugar ones only as treats.

(I avoid dairy, as per my body's reactions, and now as per Dr Jane Plant's amazing breast cancer book Your Life in Your Hands), And manuka w hot water n fresh organic unwashed lemons, and Barleans Greens or other super power green drink in times of need (the science on green powders is incredible)

 DON'T FORGET:

plus quality sleep (i fall down on that one sometimes, need to be more strict! ‪#‎iAmABat)

and meditation, (some fab guides free on youtube

AND and of course good exercise (looks like HIIT is the new way to go, Bodyblade is perfect),

and some walking and stretching.

Great skincare, hair care, bodycare. Inc desert island items, lip lift, tea tree, Elasticizer, & enough me time.

PLUS-

And not worrying or beating yourself up!

And some sunlight/ half hour in front of a SAD light, especially in the mornings #iAmABat.

Helping someone, feeling useful or planning exciting future goals.

Getting good balance - work/Life/family/others/me

And this is vital - Feeling love and loved every day even if only learning to love yourself (wayne Dyer books and cd's are brilliant for that, so is George Bensons song!).

Er.... And some sex. Ok not the last one I made that up. Probably just as well... Lolol xx

Joanna Penn’s Book Marketing Seminar

Last Saturday, Joanna and colleague Penny Courtney held a wonderfully info-packed one day course in Waterloo called ‘how to market your book’. Packed with fellow self-publishers, it was an enlightening, inspiring and entertaining seminar, and I went away with several new ideas for my fiction as well as a head full of PR and marketing facts. For instance – the summary at the bottom of this blog is just a microcosm of what we covered during the day. Do go see her website for more info on these and other wonderful snippets of info certain to make every self-publisher’s mouth water! Just got to do it now!

Amazing Author Earnings Survey

OMG this is the report the self-pub world has been talking about this week. You will marvel at some of the statistics. For instance, if you take the top 100 bestsellers on amazon, and divide them up into who published them, the Big 5 (Hachette, Macmillan, Penguin/RandomHouse, & Simon and Schuster) come out as a much less appealing option for authors than anyone ever thought! I’ve signed up for the next report too – can’t hurt to get a bigger picture view of the ever changing world of self publishing, eh? Mind you – who amongst us would actually turn down a six figure contract? Click here for full report.

Book marketing seminar – highlights

-- DO WRITE MORE BOOKS – it’s far and away the key to more sales - we hear it over and over again. Eg Russell Blake, who publishes a new full length novel every 6 weeks or so.

- H M Ward is a hot romance writer, she writes New Adult (as opposed to young adult - basically it's like young adult but slightly older, 18-21, and story is about sex for first time) - she sold 1.5million books since 2011. Wow! Has had tons of New York Times bestsellers. The reason is - she's so prolific. She releases a new book = 20000 word novellas only - every TWO AND A HALF WEEKS! This ties in with the 30-60-90 day algorithms on amazon - where you stay near the top of their list of promoted items if your books are selling, and you drop off if nothing new comes out to keep your titles in demand. Go see www.sexyawsomebooks.com - she speaks in the young adult vernacular there too.

- DO add a link in back of every book to take people direct to your website - with eBooks, that should click thru direct to your ‘subscribe to my newsletter’ page

- DO look at foreign markets - Germany is now where the US was in 2011 - eBooks exploding - Joanna is translating hers into German and Italian and Spanish. Russian is the 3rd biggest eBook market in the world. Mandarin is for the Chinese market - that's where Jo's spending time - including tweeting according to their time zone. She's got an interview with an INDIAN AUTHOR on her website. In Germany recently, the top 10 bestsellers were all self-published.

- DO use podcasts and vlog's - video blogs - it's another 'appointment to view' - reason for people to keep coming back to you and your site/resources

- EG one guy has made it huge cos he does short stories every month on his website which he READS - uploads an mp3 copy of  a weekly story recorded on smartphone, easy to listen to and download. It's built him a huge audience and of course it knocks on to his eBook sales.

- DO Google book bloggers/the name of author who's like you. Email them bloggers and ask them if they’d like to see a copy of your book to review.

Go to www.thecreativepenn.com for more info.

Week 3 of 18 – Our Break the Habit Challenge Continues.

Fab ‘Break the Habit’ success stories. Aspartame the Dodgy Sweetener. And a valentine’s treat – or two!

This week I’ve been mainly –

-          not eating till 6 on the hunger scale,

-          choosing what my body really wants (not my brain),

-          stopping when satisfied, and

-          giving my meal full attention.

Yes, that’s the freedom eating credo, as fully explained in Till the Fat Lady Slims. This week, from 18th-21st Feb, I’ll be uploading a little freebie basic beginners outline to what Food Freedom is all about, the principles around which my semi-autobiographical weight loss book is based. So watch out for it! Click here to see more. (link being enabled shortly) More news Monday.

And so far I think I’ve dropped another couple of pounds, but am not weighing myself. Debbie Sinclair Bunn who’s taken to Freedom Eating big time, and even went as far as to throw her scales in the bin! Attagirl! Do it if they decide whether you have a good or a bad day – don’t let an inanimate object decide whether you will have a good or a bad day!

Meanwhile, on the facebook site there’ve been some lovely success stories including this one, from Nicola Brigden. It warms the cockles of my heart to read words like these. Thank you Nicola, and do keep it up ladies!

“So last night I spent 1/2 hour reading TTFLS and the first wee lightbulb has gone off in this daft head of mine! Had my dinner and brain said 'get weight watchers choc roll'; hang on a min brain, tum do u want it - not at the mo, happy with chicken dinner - OK will check with you in 15 mins
15 mins later - tum do you want anything - not at the mo. It was a bit later that my tum started to say it needed something - after discussion/listening we agreed on a glass of milk
Looking forward to another 1/2 hour with the book tonight ......
Oh, and thanks again to the Ladies who were generous with their encouragement yesterday - I am now in happy place and 1/2 lb loss is GOOD.”

Great post, Nicola! And of course our closed sister group, for those most initimate shares and precious ‘before pics’, is also growing in number with over 200 posts last week alone. Am sooooo proud of our girls on there, and their stickability and enthusiasm and support for others. Do come join us, it’s never too late! And if you’ve got a ShareStory you’d like to feature on here, just email me This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. THE DANGERS OF ASPARTAME

Did you know there have been more reports to the FDA about aspartame reactions (also known by other sweetener names, full info in article) than all the other food additives put together? I was quite amazed to hear some of the stories posted on facebook this week, when I shared the link to Dr Mercola’s article which includes lots of useful links including to scientific studies. Many said they had reactions that needed a docs appointment and they all went away once aspartame had been identified. Go here to read the article – it makes for sobering reading to any diet drink fanatics.

OTHER NEWS

-          Cancer cells gobble up fructose, scientific study finds – read more here. Another reason to AVOID! It’s as featured in the brilliant 15 minute video about Is Sugar Toxic, from the excellent US News show Sixty Minutes – worth a watch.

A Bear Named Flint

The Break the Habit Challenge continues, the steamy chapter is nearly finished (news of how to get it will go out in this newsletter next weekend) and the decision making about the cover art for my next stand alone book 'diary of a wannabe shopping channel presenter' continues apace. Lots of deadlines for me over the next few weeks! Good job I've just booked a nice little break away to a Champneys spa (got a really good voucher deal) at the end of Feb. So much to write!

And amongst it all, news of a Bear named Flint!

It's a bit of a newsflash, 'cos there's not even a picture of it just yet, but I was so chuffed when I found out there was going to be one! It's due to be in this week's QVC Charlie Bears shows (check out the TV guide for when they're on) - assuming it gets delivered in time. And as soon as I get a pic, I will let you all know what it looks like. And I guess I'll be one of the first to buy it! lol. Maybe they'll let me dedicate it to my old dad Derek, or 'our man Flint', who passed on over twenty years ago, when he was just 52. The same age I'll be this May! Eeek!

As Friday is Valentine's Day, I've been thinking of ways of treating myself, being single and all that (again! Lol) I'm actually working on air on QVC on the night, so if you're not celebrating do join me! Then it'll be a nice day of pampering I think, on Saturday! Super! Yankee fragrances, and top skincare and bath brands and a lovely takeaway meal, plus some sort of film, is my estimate? what do you think?

Finally, if you're a writer, do read this Friday's RiWiSi for a link to an amazing new blog which blows the traditional beliefs of the publishing world out of the water! And of course, as mentioned, there will be news of two freebies - my original short story for Valentine's Day, the Valentine's Surprise, and the shiny new steamy chapter, Hawaiian Escape Extra - Helen and Allesandro in Tuscany - it's the x-rated bedroom scene alluded to in the novel. Enjoy your week!

best wishes
