Yes it’s been another busy week!

So busy I’ve skipped a week on this blog but hope that’s ok – therefore this one is a bit later than normal but I’m able to forewarn you about a super deal coming up on QVC if you’re interested namely a lovely Tignanello bag – launching with me on Wed night 22nd March at midnight.

More from my next QVC blog will be here on the qvc web page as usual, but go here to read about last week’s shenanigans including milking a cow! Here’s an extract -

Blooper - Teat wont work – lol!

My last week's Book of the Week – is Anjana Chowdhury’s thought provoking novel  Under the Pipal tree – an unusual one, written by one of the lovely ladies who attended a retreat in Devon, it’s set in India and tells a fascinating tale.

have a great week! x

A few weeks ago, an amazing woman came to Retreats for You on one of our writing retreats and wowed us with her rapping (yes really!) and told us about her new book now out inc on Amazon -

Under the Pipal Tree

Rohini, a wealthy Indian woman of Mumbai discovers a shocking truth about her identity. As she struggles with the truth and battles with periods of depression, Rohini develops a candid and supportive relationship with her therapist.

Maria, her childhood nanny, unravels their past. The stories of the two women merge and each learns something from the other. Indira, Rohini s mother, pragmatic and outspoken, is the tent pole of the three women s relationship.

In a tale of secrets, and social prejudices, the three redefine their boundaries with each other and the world..

Sounds good, I think! Especially if there's any of the magic of the tall tales she was telling in front of the fire each night!

" the portrait of three women in relation to each other in the complexities of contemporary Indian society.
A delicate way of writing from Anjana Chowdhury. A first novel with colourful details of sceneries and human observation of relationships.
A marvelous fiction taking place in Mumbai and Kalkota."

Have a lovely week

d

Gosh what a busy week!

Much of my news will be on the QVC blog out Friday, it will be here.

But in this little update I wanted to discuss a topic that cropped up when my son’s big watershed birthday happened – yes, I have a 30 year old son. Yes, this week, Bradley was 30. How on earth does that even happen?! When I still feel 30 myself, to be faced with a boy who has become not only a man but a man who is getting the first signs of distinguished grey at his temples – means I’m reminded how quickly life flies by. And it got me to thinking, about the passage of time, as I watched him be stoooopid at his 30th party in London, happy-tiddly-funny and making everyone laugh. We have to make every day count, don’t we? And how we all leave our mark on the people and places we touch in our passage through this lifetime.

At my Devon retreat* where I now am when I’m not at QVC (see below for how to book to come along – full board £80 per person per night, two places free 13th march if you can come!) I often get to talking with new people about all sorts of situations, life experiences and so forth. Plus meeting new villagers who have their own tales to tell, means it helps keep things in context. One lady was telling  me during my stint volunteering in the village shop this week (it was fun!) that most of her family were all born in this house and that her great great grandfather was the one mentioned on the census I had a picture of – Moses Dufty. He was the landlord of the then ‘White Hart pub’ which was what Retreats for You was during most of the 1800s. She only recalls that it stopped being a pub when the landlord died and it reverted to a home instead. Don’t know why. If you do, let me know? Cynthia doesn’t have pics, sadly, but it makes me happy to hear about those old days.

Turns out if you didn’t buy the house you were in, from the Clinton Estate in the 1930s, it was sold off, you were turfed out and someone else bought it. My next door neighbour Caroline’s hubby Keith’s mum and dad were two such new arrivals, as it happens. Another family called the Jones’s are well known in the village and Brian Jones who is in his 80s now, and lives up the road in East Street, and they must have taken over this house, The Court, when the Dufty family moved up North Street in the early 1940s just before Cynthia was born.

Then I went along to pancake night at the village hall this week and spotted more old pics of Sheepwash on the wall – INCLUDING the back of The Court in the centre of this shot -

One of them shows the back of The Court in the early 1960s – before the new roof was put on what is now the kitchen area but what shows as being an old out building in this photo. And the garden at the back is much bigger too. The old pig farm to the east is still there, of course, that was only made into a new housing development within the last 20 years. And you can still see the little petrol pumps which used to be in the square opposite RFy. Amazing how so much is the same yet so much is different.

All in all, it’s so wonderful to be integrating into a place with so much history now. I’ve never lived in a village so old, and I really appreciate all its foibles and idiosyncrasies.

Hence keeping the kitchen floor – this week my son-in-law-to-be, Handyman Nick, came down with a soda crystal blasting machine, to get the tiles clean, so they can be re-grouted then sealed and then hopefully easier to keep clean longer term. That’s the theory anyway. Pics next week!

Other news –

If you missed my updates from the last couple of weeks, apologies, I had a change to my web set up so here are the links to the new blogs I posted in case you wanted to catch up!

Click here to read about the MDD weekend and see some fab videos and here to read Derek the dog (my little sponsor puppy) latest update about his progress on the way to becoming a medical detection dog for a diabetic owner who is yet to be chosen.

Click here to read ‘Less clutter more joy’, last week’s news update including a link to the little blog ‘escaping the inescapable’ which I did as I hope it might help some people who are suffering from emotional abuse, written after a chat with a lovely lady at one of my retreats.

*Click here to see the latest news about coming down to Retreats for You and booking some me-time away from day-to-day life whether you’re a writer, a carer, or just a busy mum in need of a break!

And click here to read about a brilliant book called The Girl Before – I’m still reading it but it’s going to be a film apparently, by Ron Howard, it’s that good!

Hope you have a good week!

I’m off to a writing retreat of my own in Bristol with ace mentor Julie Cohen this weekend – then back to welcome another batch of writers to Retreats for You here in Sheepwash. Not back on QVC till the week after as I’m using up annual leave. Getting lots done and learning how to do a bit of plastering too! Lol. Loving life at the moment, and to be honest, even though there are things going on that I wish weren’t, it’s all about focussing on what makes you happy and gives you joy – happiness is a choice after all.

Best wishes

Well what a fabulous weekend we had when we opened the doors at Retreats for You in Sheepwash for two afternoons of vintage teas, in aid of MDD. Three of the partnerships came to stay for the weekend, including trainer Debra church, Gemma and Polo and Claire and Julian, Gemma's parents, plus lovely Carolyn and Simba. All the dogs played well with my two!

video here

And here's what it's all about - when Simba alerts Carolyn that her blood sugars are at a dangerous level. watch what happened here.

Plus a lady called Eileen and her llittle dog Eddie came by from their home locally in Exmouth, and to be featured on the BBC Spotlight South west report which went out that evening on BBC1, and brought several people anew, on the Sunday. On Sunday we also had Charlie Bears' William and Charlie Morris attend, to present a cheque for £4000 and posed for the Okehampton times photographer. It was raised by sales of the little collectable mohair bear Bones who is now available here on QVC, well what's left of the stock as it's nearly all gone!

Many pics and videos are on the latest QVC blog I did, go here to read it and see them all!

Well done everyone involved. More at Easter, I hope.

Less Clutter More Joy

Apologies this blog was late being finished and did not get sent out as a newsletter! Here it is anyway....

Clutter clearing is 'modern day alchemy' apparently. And I can vouch for that after another long break in Devon - with - finally - a super new space to put all the exercise gear out, and a clear office too, there's a lot to be said for it. I got on to this subject after reading this post, including a free video apparently, about why making room for tidiness in your life is so effective - go here to read/listen to it. And if you do it too, let me know if it gives you joy also.

It's all about following the joy nowadays for me. I found a little rock on the beach when I took the dogs down for a second stint near Bude, on the most blustery day I've ever spent on the English coastline. And it had what looked like a kind of a heart pattern with a kind of an arrow through it - ahhhh bless ! See main pic.

And it made me feel good. Anything that lifts your spirits and gives your more energy afterwards is worth chasing - don't you think? And anything that lowers it, you should not feel guilty if you cut it right out of your life. Even people.......

Yes, another hot topic this week at the retreat was the subject of emotionally abusive relationships - I finally got the message from the universe about this topic having had it discussed several times at retreats, so it's time to own up to some awful secrets - as it might help someone. It's amazing what a difference it can make if you let others into your heartache, as long as by doing so you're not actually manipulating them! Anyway I've written a blog about it - it's here. Go read it and see what you think.

This week's QVC blog including latest early bird links to liz earle and skechers is here - and includes a ton of pics and videos of when the BBc came to Sheepwash, when we did our Medical Detection Dogs vintage teas weekend. it was super to see so many people come down to support us, and we raised a lot of money and more importantly awareness, for these clever canines. Plus Charlie Bears' Will and Charlie presented the £4000 cheque to the charity for the sale of little Bones bear/dog - so generous.

Lots going on - keep in touch with me via my Facebook page here for most updates, or twitter @debbieflint.

much love - more next week

Play the cards, right?

Have you ever seen a deck of cards like this? This week I went to a friend of mine who does readings as a hobby. She said she had never seen a spread of cards like this before, apparently I have all the good ones! She told me I had picked the one that means all my wishes would come true, then she said there is a lot of money cards in there, and everything is going to work out. Have you ever had yours done? Obviously I take it all with a pinch of salt but I do love the fun element of it.

So maybe I should start planning my round the world cruise now then! Ha ha.

There is no doubt that being more financially secure gives you freedom though. And freedom is a big part of my life. I have had lots of times where I haven't had that element especially in the years I was away from QVC. So I am very grateful to qvc for allowing me to lump all my days together, otherwise I would never have been able to make the move to Devon in the first place.

She also told me that my love life is going to experience a massive uplift with a new man appearing on the horizon. Or it may be someone who I have already met. But yea, which ever!

This week I went on a blind date on Valentine's Day for the first time ever! And I cannot tell you more but I will just say it was fun. And along with the other two people that I have met/am meeting for lunch/coffee, I think there may be a good vibe about my chances of finding someone perfect for me this year :-)... I wish! Well, at least it's a start to have had the first Valentine's Day in 11 years where something actually happened! And meeting someone new is always fraught isn't it. I also got a big delivery to Qvc Which was flowers and a Prosecco gift. Very thoughtful and very pleasing to have my boss deliver it with much ceremony to my dressing room :-)

So in the end this year's valentines turned out not to be so bad!

The thing I have to say though is this. Although I share quite a lot on social media, please don't expect a blow by blow account of my romance. Because it's really important not to be bearing all in public at such a delicate early stage. And maybe not at such a less delicate later stage either. I know it irks some of you who wish to know more, but I really cannot divulge what is going on in my love life. It may be tumbleweed! But whatever is meant to be will be, that's for sure. lol........!

Book of the week is the fab book, soon-to-be-film, The Girl Before – looking forward to this one! Another intriguing thriller in the vein of Gone Girl and Girl on the Train etc! more here.

Do click here to read the latest fabulous update I’ve been sent from Medical Detection dogs about little Derek the soon-to-be detector dog! I love my little sponsor dog!

Have a fab week. Things have been a little bit upside down for me of late – but I’m really pleased to be off air for eight days on the trot now, to go do the super vintage teas pop up weekend on behalf of Medical Detection Dogs charity at the retreat in Sheepwash (EX215NE if you can come Sat and Sun afternoons, 18&19th Feb) Hope to see you there! more here

Book of the Week this week is a bit of a thriller - The Girl Before sounded really intriguing, so I downloaded JP Delaney's bestseller on audiobook as usual.

Jane stumbles on the rental opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to live in a beautiful ultra-minimalist house designed by an enigmatic architect, on condition she abides by a long list of exacting rules like having virtually no possessions. After moving in, she discovers that a previous tenant, Emma, met a mysterious death there - and starts to wonder if her own story will be a re-run of the girl before. As twist after twist catches the reader off guard, Emma's past and Jane's present become inexorably entwined in this tense, page-turning portrayal of psychological obsession.

Following in the footsteps of Gone Girl and The Girl on the TrainThe Girl Before is being brought to the big screen by Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard. How exciting is that!

Highly recommended!
