Debbie Flint

You know one of those moments when you meet up again with someone you’ve not seen for over a decade, and you just pick up where you left off? I have a couple of old boyfriends in that category who are dear to me. And also several female friends who have been pivotal in my life.

One of them is Shawn Goodman and she met me last week after a gap of 15 years or so. The last time I met up with her, I believe I was in LA with the kids on one of our adventure hols I used to take them on, and she met us for a meal in Santa Monica. I think. Well all these years later, Shawn was over in the UK with her other half who is in the medical profession, and asked me to meet up for afternoon tea. So we did!

It was amazing to catch up with her, and it reminded me of those early days when Freedom Eating was an alien concept. Basically it’s all about listening to your body instead of over ruling it with your brain.

Basics of Freedom Eating

If you can listen to your body it will tell you when to eat, WHEN being really important, plus how to eat and what food to choose. Usually it's based on what we now know is messages from your gut, associated with your microbiome. In the old days, like with The Seven Secrets, they said listen to your body, they just didn't know why. When I wrote my version, the original Til the Fat Lady Slims book in 2002 and it's updated version 2.0 in 2014, I refined the guidelines into six principles, and explained all about the 'When' diet - and how it could work alongside any traditional diet plan - any. Also how to do it, but not really why it's so successful where so many other pure diet plans fail. The facebook group kicked off, and the online support really made a difference to everyone in it, as we encouraged each other to remember things like 'the wayside is part of the journey, just don't set up camp there.' And much discussion about NSV's - non-scales victories - which help us avoid relying on the dreaded scales too much.

Then came a revolution in understanding the signalling from the body and the connection between that and the food we eat. So since the new technology allowed scientists to examine the gut in more detail, and its links to the whole of the rest of the body and the mind, I made the connection and put it in the book 3.0. - the companion to my original TTFLS book about Freedom Eating. It became a fascination to me also, to observe other people and their own diet habits - or non diet habits, as the case maybe. And from those observations, I created several 'guises' or types of Freedom Eater - gave them all a name, and described them in book 3.0. These six guises help you understand yourself and your own particular type of food prison, and how to get out of it using TTFLs principles.

All of this was then incorporated into a newly updated version published by Choc Lit my publisher, in January 2017 - the end product is this one, and is available to order in good bookshops and of course online, eg on amazon here.

It made me very proud this week to bring Shawn right up to speed and has reminded me how much this system helps people who could never manage their behaviour around food before. So hats off to you, Shawn Goodman and Vicky Hansen the original Freedom Eating founders, and thank you for giving me my life back!

More about the system and testimonials on my webpage here.

Who knows, maybe come join our Facebook group (here) having read the books and found out more from the big TTFLS QVC blog i did when it sold there, perhaps you too will have an experience a bit like Penni Rowe -

Really enjoyed this audiobook - there are so many accents that the narrator was key. Mark Meadows did a very good job, albeit a little staid at the start. I will look out for him again in the future.

So the story is neither time slip nor time travel but it has elements of both. Just my cuppa tea. I'm beginning to realise that I really like anything to do with time quirks and alternative realities. Sliding Doors, Groundhog Day, About Time, and so many others. But what makes this more than just a tale about very long lived people, is the pathos infused throughout. Matt's previous bestseller 'Reasons to Stay Alive' with 825 five star reviews, laid the foundations for the philosophical thinking expounded in this novel, and it really makes you think. It will stay with me long after I finished the book.

'I am old. That is the first thing to tell you. The thing you are least likely to believe. If you saw me you would probably think I was about 40, but you would be very wrong.'

Tom Hazard has a dangerous secret. He may look like an ordinary 41-year-old, but owing to a rare condition, he's been alive for centuries. From Elizabethan England to jazz age Paris, from New York to the South Seas, Tom has seen a lot and now craves an ordinary life.

Always changing his identity to stay alive, Tom has the perfect cover - working as a history teacher at a London comprehensive. Here he can teach the kids about wars and witch hunts as if he'd never witnessed them firsthand. He can try to tame the past that is fast catching up with him. The only thing Tom mustn't do is fall in love.

How to Stop Time is a wild and bittersweet story about losing and finding yourself, about the certainty of change and about the lifetimes it can take to really learn how to live.

Highly reviewed online already and I would not be surprised if this becomes a movie!

I've just a popped a little review on Amazon having read my pal Carolyn's new book which I bought this week. It's a long awaited book two in the Harry Briscombe series. Now I really liked this character and his sidekick in Cry from the Grave so was delighted to see them back. If you like well crafted, well plotted books with compelling characters, get this one.

HOW WELL DO YOU REALLY KNOW YOUR FAMILY?
Kirsty Cartwright is licking her wounds in France after a breakup with her fiancé and a massive fall-out with her father, Dominic. Then she hears that her father has been seriously injured in an accident. Forced to come home and face her demons, she soon begins to wonder whether there is more to his accident than meets the eye – but the closer she gets to the truth the more she questions who she can trust – including her own family.
DS Harry Briscombe is facing a personal dilemma that threatens his career. Already immersed in a local murder investigation, Dominic Cartwright’s accident raises the unwelcome possibility that the two cases could be linked. It’s a race against time with more lives at stake if the killer can’t be stopped.
The Jagged Line is a book about family loyalties, and how far we’re prepared to compromise our principles for the ones we love.
Is loyalty but a step away from delusion?

Amazon reviewer says -

"Highly recommend this book. A good read with interesting characters and a plot that holds your attention as it unravels. Well worth reading."

The winners will be notified straight after. All the info you need is on the page. Thank you in advance for helping.

We have raised some wonderful money in the past, I do hope we are able to do so again now, especially considering how Dr Claire has been doing the rounds on various TV news interview programs recently following the announcement that the medical detection dogs team will before long be able to help detect Parkinson's disease apparently (see last post on this tab.) That's on top of their work with the NHS in a trial to detect prostate cancer in urine samples provided by the hospital. Plus maybe even breast cancer one day.

That's half of what they do. The other half is that they provide individual dogs to owners who have illnesses, eg diabetes (type one brittle) plus they even cover the cost of the upkeep and everything for the poor patient. It really is a worthy cause and I do hope you are lucky! Fingers crossed for you!

WORK IN PROGRESS

Rowan Coleman has done an amazing thing. In fact a series of quite possible things as it turns out, in her new novel The Summer of Impossible Things. She has created a riveting novel, that entranced me from the outset, and gripped me at the end. I always try to guess the ending and this one kept me guessing right to the end. Whilst I was reading it, on audiobook, listening to some very skilled New York accents amongst other things, I kept finding myself staring into space every so often, and realised that my mind was completely enraptured with the characters and their predicament. If this is not made into a film I will be very, very surprised. Rowan, well done, you have created one of the best books I have read in recent times. And one I will do something very rare with – I will almost certainly read it again on audiobook. I have only done that with Diana Gabledon's Outlander series and Mad About the Boy, The third Bridget Jones story. Anyway, this latest tome from Rowan has already got nearly 100 5* reviews on Amazon. Highly recommended.

"Thirty years ago something terrible happened to Luna's mother. Something she's prepared to reveal only after her death.

In settling her mother's affairs, Luna finds more questions than answers until something impossible and magical happens....

Luna meets her mother as a young woman back in the summer of 1977. If she can truly travel back in time, she can change things. But in order to save her mother's life, will she have to sacrifice her own?"

The feedback on reviews so far has been outstanding - mostly five stars, and I'm not surprised.

"I loved this book and my only disappointment was when I finished it!
The story flows and the characters make you care about them. A mix of time travel, love, family and New York (Brooklyn) what's not to enjoy.
The pictures painted by the story telling made me feel like I was watch a film, they were so vibrant and believable.
Luna, the main character is a fabulous creation and you want things to work out for her and you truly admire her courage.
Without spoiling the plot, there are a couple of twists that I didn't see coming and they make this story even more clever.
I can only say that this story was magical and I loved it !"

Raving about Rowan

I have to say I am absolutely raving at the moment about the brilliant Rowan Coleman novel - 'The Summer of Impossible Things.' I finished the audio book this week and it was one of those books that had me entranced – I kept finding myself staring into space because I was thinking about the characters in the story and could not wait to get back to the next bit. It is a genius time travel web of intrigue, and I loved every second. Do read my review here, where you can also find out how to get it for free.

Plus if anyone finds it, this week's My Weekly mag has a story by Julie Cohen my mentor. Julie is doing a tutored workshop at Retreats for You, our guesthouse, on September 25, Monday to Friday, for £600 or so. Full board including wine at dinner, tuition, one-to-one et cetera. If it is still available or if you would like to go on waitlist for the next one, do let us know at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

My QVC blog this week is now up here and has some interesting news, and a picture of Lee Hohbein my telly hubby - and his ripped pants! Ha ha! Do go see if you can. It also has tons of sneaky peaks from next week as usual and the early bird link available now for a cool pair of Skechers ballet pumps, Sunday's TSV. And which high flying daring ride I may go on in the next few weeks... out now, do go look.

On Facebook this week there were several Vlogs that were very different – including this one which was done from inside the 'Filter Through' coffee shop in Holsworthy where I go regularly not only to Waitrose but also to shop or to meet friends. Thing is when I tell them where to meet, I often mistakenly put 'see you in the Follow-Through…' OOps!  Now that would be an interesting shop… Not! At home in Devon this week, I took a photograph outside in the back courtyard to show the lovely flowers, the dogs came trotting after me and I said to them 'sit!' - as you do. And they did! Like two sentries! Like those lions on either side of a gated entrance. How funny.

Next week look out for a special video on the electric bike that I have now finally got set up and I'm using around the beautiful Devon countryside. It may be going up a very steep Hill pretty easy I must admit :-)

More next week.

Have a great week!

Awful week for my poor joints, following the gung ho attempts at playing netball in Black Torrington on the last two Wednesdays. This week I had to sit it out, but turns out only a few people turned up so they didn’t do the usual anyway. Phew. My ankles are still suffering as I mentioned in my vlog here. It really helps if I put my feet up – literally. And all because the lady loves …exercise.

And if you want to see an amazing role model to women, exercise fanatic Davina McCall in a pic of her ‘mummy tummy’ just go here – top marks that girl! She says her skin on her tum is like a ‘shar pei’ – one of those dogs with loads of rolls. Well if I did mine you’d say ‘what is it? Whatever it is it needs ironing!’ lol. (I know, one of my oldest, but still a good one!)

Something that’ll make your skin lovely is a good serum.

Well do read the super update on this week’s QVC blog – includes a comp to win over £100 worth of AD Synergy skin serum, which can be used along with any other brand you may currently have. And the usual sneaky peeks at upcoming deals. And the full  Go here Friday late pm onwards.

Facebook has been active this week too – including some lovely creative people suggesting ideas that helped me ‘find’ my missing calendar entries on my i-phone – turns out it was a simple ‘settings’ adjustment for the sync function – what else! Lol. Also ‘like’ my official Facebook page DebbieFlintAuthorQVC  if you ARE on Fbk, to get the updates first. (And my early bird order links can be seen here – if you can’t find them elsewhere.)

Medical Detection Dogs have a big week too – with Dr Clare appearing on the BBC to announce that they are now looking into the clever canines helping to detect Parkinson’s Disease. More here. And don’t forget to come along to my concert in Devon, on September 16th at The Plough Arts Centre, which is helping to raise funds too – lovely 40s and 50s classics and show songs, it’ll be a great night.

Had a superb week at the retreat this week, with lovely guests, great meals, nice weather, a bit of successful gardening, and an enjoyable stint in the Sheepwash Village Shop on Tuesday. Also, my pal Carolyn came along for a stay and it was so nice to have a long overdue catch up. She’s a trend setter as far as the latest marketing tips for self publishers is concerned, and she makes me wish I’d never stopped self publishing my stories to KDP. Most of them are still there and I’m very proud of my author page – see it here.

Finally on the subject of books, my Book of the Week is a very exciting one – my mentor and tutor Julie Cohen – master of show not tell – has her new book ‘Together’ out this week in hardback and ebook and I’m delighted to feature it. Can’t wait to hear the audiobook read by a Game of Thrones actor. Go here to read more about it and see how to get a free sample.

Hope all good in your world?

Have a great week!

One of my top five authors EVER releases her latest novel this week - a fascinating tale whose structure will get people talking about it.

"On a morning that seems just like any other, Robbie wakes in his bed, his wife Emily asleep beside him, as always. He rises and dresses, makes his coffee, feeds his dogs, just as he usually would. But then he leaves Emily a letter and does something that will break her heart. As the years go back all the way to 1962, Robbie's actions become clearer as we discover the story of a couple with a terrible secret - one they will do absolutely anything to protect."

'Julie Cohen's writing is powerful, moving and truly beautiful' Joanna Cannon, author of The Trouble with Goats and Sheep

'It takes a lot to tempt me from crime, but this is one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking stories I've read' Emma Flint, author of Little Deaths

'This big, clever, tender and twisty love story reminded me of One Day & The Time Traveler's Wife' Erin Kelly

'Complex, compelling and beautiful, Together is the kind of novel that will stay with you forever' Rowan Coleman, author of We Are All Made of Stars

'Brave, compelling and original' Alice Peterson, author of A Song for Tomorrow

More on Amazon here, where you can click on the 'look inside' on the picture on the Kindle option and read the first bit for free.

It is always a pleasure when one of my top 10 authors releases a new audiobook. Not only is Julie Cohens book out at the end of the month, but Rowan Coleman is releasing her new one too. So in the run up, I got one of her previous novels, now on audiobook. And I am loving it at the moment. All about a widowed mum who turns her life around by taking in interesting lodgers! How funny given my short story was about a lodger :-) (You can read it if you missed it, it's free, click here.)

Rowan has published some heartrending tales, usually with characters that are not only larger-than-life, there is always an aspect of their character that makes them very interesting. She is a master in getting you to care about their ups and downs, so I was looking forward to this one. And it's great! It's one of those that makes me want to get back in my car so I can listen to a bit more! I always do long journeys, you see, and these stories are my lifeline.

"Once upon a time, Ellie had her 'happily ever after' moment when she married her beloved Nick. But 15 years later, her husband's tragic death leaves her alone with their son and facing a mountain of debt. On the brink of bankruptcy, Ellie decides to rent out some rooms. And all too soon, the indomitable Allegra, estranged Sabine on secondment from Berlin and lads' mag aficionado Matt enter her ordered but fragile existence - each with their own messy life in tow. Ellie finds herself forced to step out of the pages of the romantic novels she hides behind, and learn to live - and love - again. Maybe a new chapter is about to begin for them all...."

Get it on Amazon here

Having just finished this book, I found that I was very impressed with yet another layer of writing I didn't see coming. There is a little aspect to the plot I could not have predicted, which gradually emerged within the tale rather than being flagged up early in neon lights as some authors do. Well done Rowan - another winner as far as I am concerned.

And watch out soon for Rowan's new book - 'the summer of Impossible Things'... ever wish you could go back in time and change your past...? Squeeee!
