Hi! Hope you're having a great weekend so far. Here's what I promised for those of you who love vintage as much as I do, a little look at a 1940s cookery book my pal Alix found - what weird ingredients! Plus - below - a sneaky peek at the new Liz Earle Today's Special Value bumper pack for a fraction of the usual cost, going live on sale around Thurs this week (19th Oct). AND news about Molly the detective dog who finds cats...

1940s Farmhouse Fare

Back in 1940, British 'countrywomen' were cooking up frugal meals and making the best of their sparse ingredients, and telling 'Farmers' Weekly' about their recipes. As well as 'make do and mend', British housewives were maximising their options with ingredients we would now call quirky or unappetising - but other meals such as 'jugged pigeons' and 'somerset rook pie with figgy pastry' seem inventive albeit unusual. In those days there were no fridges only cold pantries or larders, don't forget, and most people bought fresh for each day's meals.

The introduction to this book said they were recipes that had been tried and tested by genuine 'countrywomen' up and down the length of Britain and as such came highly recommended. Not sure if I'd have liked to eat some of them, whilst  others I'm almost tempted to try down at the Retreat in devon!

Not sure which supermarket would be selling rooks by the kilo nowadays, but an interesting glimpse at the past, isn't it! Fortunately the recipes I've been trying when it's my turn to cook down in Devon are quite straightforward ones. Mind you - the housewives or countrywomen of wartime Britain might have raised an eyebrow at my quinoa or courgetti dishes! What's your favourite one from a bygone era?

Molly the Detective Dog that Finds Cats.

Met up with Colin Butcher the owner of Molly, the detective dog who finds cats, last Friday lunchtime. She hits the news regularly and has been on the telly too. He has been offered a book deal and wanted my advice so we went to lunch. Molly is an amazing little canine who has been trained to find lost cats. I think it would make a great kids book don't you? Colin is rushed off his feet with requests for help to find pets at the moment so it was nice to catch up with him. He wasn't always a pet detective. He used to be a private investigator. Like Cormoran Strike from J. K. Rowling's Robert Galbraith novels. He once asked for my help to help one of his cases – an author who had disappeared. Colin thought her husband had done away with her and her little dog. Colin set up a scenario where I would go along with him posing as a fellow author interested in the lady's work and he would go and look out in the garden whilst I distracted the husband. But for one reason and another it never happened. A few months later the author was found dead in their sess pit along with her poor dog. I sometimes wonder what would have happened if I had gone along following up on Colin's gut instinct that the husband wasn't innocent. Now that would've been a story all on its own :-)

Saw these smiling little chaps and thought that considering there are so many babies around at the moment, I would post this pic. What a lovely sentiment, don't you think? About 17 years ago I learned that happiness was a choice. It was just after I got divorced.  I wonder if your experiences are similar to mine… Do  let me know! I went through a kind of a metamorphosis, including having a carefully concealed tattoo (three chinese symbols, and no, they didn't stand for 'quality, value and convenience!' ) as well as extra piercings. The man on the abseiling event at Center Parcs made me take it out of my belly button two years later, though, or I couldn't participate, and I never got back round to putting it back in. Anyway... there came a period when I learned different ways of dealing with the things that made me unhappy, including family comments. the phrases 'you'll get over it' and 'when I chose this I didn't have you in mind' became part of my vocab and I began focussing more and more on good things, and having appreciation. An 'attitude of gratitude' is one of the best things to cultivate, I was told. So I did, and it's really helped.

Nowadays, I'm not so much a glass half full person, I'm a glass never empty and if it is a magic genie comes and tops it back up again... 'What can we learn from this' and 'everything happens for a reason' are two great mottoes.

If you'd like to see what self-help books I recommend, you can read more about them on a blog I did, here. Enjoy. Any you've liked? Let me know. And do remember that happiness is a habit, a choice, rather than always feeling that the world made you do it or feel this way... Easier said than done, but just like touching your toes, the more you do it the easier it becomes.

The blog will also have early bird order links for the new Tarte cosmetics 6 part TSV set this Sunday.

Book of the Week - Clifton Chronicles' SIXTH - I'm romping through them now! it's 'Cometh the Hour' and is apt given this week's shenanigans at party conferences - more here. including the latest book and writing and retreat news.

Well I can easily say this guy knows how to tell a tale, since I'm now into my sixth DECADE of the same families in this series, the Clifton Chronicles, of which Cometh the Hour is the sixth book. There is a seventh , then I'm completely up to date, sad to say - as I will miss Harry Clifton and his clan once I get to the end. Apparently the seventh is the 'final' installment - but since there are several gaps in the various plots over the years, there could always be room for a spin off of some sort.

Anyway...

I'm a fan of politics, of late, and this book brings in connections with several political figures and events which are in my living memory, so it makes it even more fascinating to me to read of the exploits of the main characters. I love having a continuity between each book too - they are really just like chapters of the same story rather than feeling like a new start with new settings - moreover, each book ends on a cliffhanger which picks up directly into the next book too. I have particularly enjoyed the court room subplots, and Jeffrey Archer clearly draws on lots of research (or his own experiences!) as they are very realistic and continue apace.

As I'm writing my own mini saga, it's interesting to note the peril he puts his heroes and heroines through as part of the denouement and it's very educational too. Just as I start to feel uncomfortable, and want the characters to come good, I know there is prolonged agony ahead before I'm rewarded with payback and justice for the situation and usually good triumphs over evil. So far there are only a couple of annoying moments, for instance when a son is suddenly killed off (in an earlier book, I won't say which one) as a backstory update, rather than having been taken through it step by step as I believe should have happened.

Nonetheless it's polished, proficient and deserving of its 1200 five star reviews on Amazon - go here for more.

Looking forward to the final part. Probably that will be next week's Book of the Week!

It's a long time since I just couldn't stop reading/listening to a book - but Jeffrey Archer, master storyteller, kept me hanging on every page with another of his Clifton Chronicles books. Currently there are seven, and I'm on book 5 - Mightier Than the Sword. It follows the lives of the Barringtons and the Cliftons and their adversaries, through decades from the 1920s onwards - I'm currently up to the 1970s. If you like having a serial or a series featuring the same characters, as you've got to know them and want to stick with them rather than delve into somethign new, begin with book one, and plough your way though.

I'm loving the way Archer puts his characters in jeopardy and gives us the pay off after inflicting the necessary amount of agony as we await justice for the protagonists. Several main characters mean diversity, and even the adversaries' POV is explored too. Very well written - but then he is a master at it, even if he's not everyone's favourite person - he knows how to tell a tale.

We have a lot to learn from craftsmen like him...

Hi!

Have you noticed a real abundance of features about gut health lately? I have. And  I'm pleased to say my TTFLS book 3.0 tips and tales to inspire, was amongst the 1st to emphasise how important these bacteria are. That's why I have done a big post about it at the bottom of this blog - do have a look :-) especially if you need to lose weight. Plus our Facebook group continues to be a superb support for everyone so do feel free to come join us if you've got any of my semi-autobiographical weight loss books based on Freedom Eating (you may remember last week I reported about meeting up with Shawn Goodman who helped create this set of prinicples to help break free from Food Prison.) Following this body-signals based system means you can have whatever you want, if your body really wants it, including desserts. (Mine doesn't usually want them if it knows it can, it only  wants them when it knows it can't!) Which is handy given the mouth watering dishes served up by Wendy back at Retreats for You. Usually...

How NOT to make this classic dessert…Another culinary mix up at Retreats for You – at least it was Wendy this time! watch the video

book of the week – Erin green’s A Christmas Week Well if QVC can have Christmas in July, why not a yuletide themed book of the week! Not sure why it’s been released this early but as one reviewer says, it’s a gem, don’t wait till December! More here.

Another super QVC blog too, featuring picking up a bargain at the local auction and a cool look ahead at next week's bargains - early!

And don't forget if you are near, in Devon, mid Sept -

The Plough in Torrington is lovely, and a proper little arts venue with lots of concerts etc. Then the next day, we’ll be opening Retreats for You, my guest house in Sheepwash, for the Sunday afternoon too, for a vintage tea rooms event, so come down and meet us all!

  HAVE A GREAT WEEK!

Ps my new Till the Fat Lady Slims book is now out on Amazon here, and there’s such an amazing support system on Facebook on theTTFLS group here - do come join us!

The importance of gut health-

'Hi everyone. Are you as impressed as I am with the amount of information flooding the market now, about gut health and the microbiome? So many books, pictures, articles. And TV programmes. Very proud to have been at the forefront of identifying this important factor for achieving good health . And weight loss of course.
My book 3.0 written way back in 2015 features the basics of why. As well as loads of other tips & tales to inspire. And the enlightening idea of the Inner Chimp, the demon inside us making us do things we know we should not do, and how to control it. Plus the Six guises of freedom eater - which one are you? Link is above.

However do read the article below, and it features an interesting approach if you like to diet alongside ttfls- eg if you are a Linda guise of freedom eater! My sister Linda is on a healthy eating drive at the moment and i feel much better when avoiding sugar. My body doesnt really Want it unless I am in the grips of a temporary sugar addiction

So aside from all the little mentions of sweet food recipes et cetera that crop up on this group, it's more important than ever to look after your internal microbes.

Apparently Hippocrates knew that all disease begins in the gut. So wise even back then eh. Who knew it would come full circle.

Anyone adjusted for gut health and got great results? Tummy problems, bloating, digestion better? Or increased your intake of probiotics eg with capsules (I take supermightidophilus 24, amazon, £23 or so for 60)

Anyone notice now listening to your body, that certain foods always have a particular effect on you? Which?

So fascinating. Many illnesses are now  being linked to the gut and even depression is associated with that now. Hospitals are starting to give probiotics after treatment with strong antibiotics too now, thank God. At last.

Don't forget to watch the amazing videos on YouTube of Gut Reaction parts 1&2- its free.

"A warm, funny, uplifting new writer to celebrate!’ KATIE FFORDE.

'A lovely story of self discovery. It was heart felt and emotional and a heartwarming tale of new beginnings' JO THOMAS.

Flora Phillips has an excuse for every disaster in her life; she was abandoned as a new-born on a doorstep one cold autumn night, wrapped in nothing but a towel. Her philosophy is simple: if your mother doesn't want you – who will?

Now a thirty-year-old, without a boyfriend, a career or home she figures she might as well tackle the biggest question of them all – who is she? So, whilst everyone else enjoys their Christmas Eve traditions, Flora escapes the masses and drives to the village of Pooley to seek a specific doorstep. Her doorstep.

But in Pooley she finds more than her life story. She finds friends, laughter, and perhaps even a love to last a lifetime. Because once you know where you come from, it's so much easier to know where you're going.

A story of redemption and love, romance and Christmas dreams-come-true, the perfect novel to snuggle up with."

Highly reviewed too -

Don't wait until Christmas to read this book! It's also great escapist reading for summer holidays.
The quest to find Flora's mother kept me turning the pages. It's hard to imagine how it must feel to not know your blood parents but this book takes you there. And I have to admit to being a little bit in love with Joel ...
